Great episode and I so concur with the tips. The more you are around guides as a beginning fly angler, the more these fundamentals will resonate. And...we are so fortunate to have these amazing TH-cam channels where you can learn on your own. I have been seriously fly fishing since starting out with determination in 2018. I am 64. I have WANTED to really do this all my life. But there always seemed to be a fly angler but there were always (real or mostly imagined) barriers. There is no better way to spend a day (or hopefully many) than fly fishing for your mental, physical and perhaps spiritual health. Keep it up Mr. D!

Ask for Pete Cozad. You will love the Driftless.

Pete Cozad is an amazing guide and an even better person. All those folks at the Driftless Anger in Viroqua are first rate, non-pretentious, and skillful as all get out. I guided with Pete almost two decades ago, and I still remember things he taught me that day. Eat it!!!!

A little disappointed from the title as I was hoping some conversation about Wet Fly (soft hackle or spiders). After watching a Simon Gawesworth video where he described swinging a soft hackle downstream as the easiest form of fly fishing but fishing them upstream was the hardest I was determined to try. Took two years to find a guide who would agree to teaching me this style and I am still hooked. Would appreciate your comments and suggestions on this ancient but often ignored form. Watch all your videos since finding you.

When you hear that snap, it's another 3 - 5 dollars for the fly shop

It is generally a long two handed fly rod usually used to fish salmon and steelhead.

Spey. Named for the river in Scotland. I do a lot of Trout Spey. It's a two handed rod sized down from the usual salmon/steelhead rigs for trout. I fish a big river, the Sacramento, and it allows me to fire line out without wearing out my shoulder. It's a LOT easier on your body once you learn how do do it (not that hard...). And the takes are very fun. Plus you feel them so you don't have to constantly be staring at your line or indicator. You can watch all the cool stuff on the river like ospreys, eagles, deer coming down to water...it's a very pleasant way to fish.

A double handed rod for longer casting across larger, swifter rivers….usually for larger fish like steelhead.
