  • As I continue making progress on the Hayley Guitars SubTonic Bass Guitar build, I realized I didn't have a notched straightedge for the 32" scale length neck. After looking around online, I couldn't find anyone selling a notched straightedge in that scale length. Its time to make my own. I picked up a piece of 1/8" Aluminum flat stock from the hardware store. After marking out the fret locations, I used the table saw to cut notches for the frets. (Yes, you can cut aluminum with your table saw) After a little cleanup with a file, I now have a custom made notched straightedge for my guitar build. You can use this method to make any scale length you need. Its inexpensive and easy to do.

Fantastic work, dude! Nicely done! 😃
Making tools is one of the most fun jobs in my opinion.
Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊

Good deal Jeff. Someone has to make the tool needed and if you can't find one to buy make it. Even if you can find where to buy the tools there are no rule that say you can't make them anyway.

Very nice. Sure saves money doing that (as long as I remember to cut in bypass). :D

A router with a 5 or 6mm bit works fine also. Cheers...

I haven't tried a router but I can imagine it would work great.

Hypothetical question - if holding it up to the levels showed that it wasn’t quite straight how would you address that at home? Ruling out picking another piece that was straight.

I like your question. I guess I'd probably get the piece cut to length and use a sanding beam of some type and sand it flat on my shooting board. If you didn't have a shooting board, you could just use any known flat surface and very carefully sand it flat.
