Nah. Most variety shows like this one had a live orchestra. They where playing live with them. There were no such things as “backing tracks” in this era, unless it was something like “American Bandstand” or “Top of The Pops”, where you mimed and Lip synched the entire thing… in those cases, SOMETIMES the lead vocal might be live. This is completely live.

Live vocal, not instruments tho, but they could have sang it vocal only as it's purely about their great harmonising & nearly as good as the vinyl. Beatles & Beach Boys that's all you needed really.

Aside from Do It Again (a nice sort of brief comeback single for the guys), the bands reputation was in the toilet until their 1971 LP Surf’s Up, thanks to manager Jack Rieley sort of reconnecting the bands new image to the counterculture, getting them on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. And then the nostalgia craze around the world happened and Capitol rushed out their compilation Endless Summer in 74 and all these fans came out to see The Beach Boys cling back onto their old surfboards that they stuck in the attic in 1965. All that creative reinvention they went through as a struggling band in America gave us some great music, but the American public ended up more interested in reconnecting with their youth hearing Fun Fun Fun on the radio.

Saw a few 50th anniversary with Brian and Al as well which was brilliant. I have also seen Brian solo about 5 times. My point, whatever your view on Mike, is his shows are fantastic. Full of energy, great harmonies and still a nostalgic trip in to the 60s where I wasn't present. Brian solo shows were sadly a drab, dire and dare I say boring experience. He just sat there pretending to play the piano with an obvious autotune which still sounded flat. Brian is a God - Yes, and totally accept he was the genius behind the original Beach Boys, but I still strongly maintain in Mike Love we trust.

The issue here is that there is a large contingent of BB fans who feel like you have to hate Mike to love (no puns) Brian and that's just not the case. Mike wrote a lot of great lyrics and hooks into those songs. Point is the group is nothing without everyone in it, except maybe Al since David Marks replaced him for 3 or 4 albums and did a magnificent job.
Not the most brilliant song they ever recorded, but it's kind of fun. This live version sounds considerably better than the studio version; not too many bands can pull that off. They must have felt a little awkward in 1969, with everything they stood for being, at least for a time, going out of style. I wonder if they knew how well it would stand the test of time.

Well I love the beach boys but they just should have played the song without playing the recorded track in the background, and it creates a bizarre hybrid, which is awkward and really hard to listen to.
No, bad camera work. If you know their voices, the camera is on the wrong singer. Pay close attention to Carl, Alan, and Bruce. Learn their voices. Ignore when the camera shows Mikey, he doesn't matter. Carl and Alan do. Alan is hitting the HIGH Falsetto notes. (Can't do it now, neither can I.) Carl is hitting the high Tenor stuff, and doing it better than I can, even though that is my range. Bruce is MUCH better than Mikey, at the lower tenor stuff.
