Great video, also something worth noting, one character can share 2 or 3 of these traits. For ex, the deuteragonist can also be a mentor and father figure to the protagonist, and maybe even the antagonist.
They could be both. The categories are not mutually exclusive, they are just character types. A secondary protagonist can be a friend of the main protagonist
Hmmm for such a long series like One Piece, it can be hard to say. I would personally consider the whole crew to be deuteragonists. There is usually not so many deuteragonists, but since One Piece is so long, it would have more of these character types in the story than the average series would. I consider the friends and allies character type to be more for sub characters, so in One Piece, some friend or ally characters could be Ace (can also be a sibling figure), Sabo or Shirahoshi. (It's been a while since I've read One Piece, so I could be wrong). Also, multiple character types can be merged into one character type, so Luffy's crew could also be classed as friends and allies. However, for the friend/ally character type, I consider it more as side characters who are friends to the main character, but don't fully interact with the story. I hope that makes sense 😊
I just want to say that you are amazing. After I watched your videos, I realised how much my story is lacking in so many ways. Although I'm only writing for fun, but I can already see some of the missing pieces to make it more interesting. You deserve at least 500k subs.
Imo, Ally + Conflict is such a good combo for a character. I think of Howard from Randy Cunningham and Jamie from Megas XLR. Characters like this can cause a fair amount of the comedy and even make things harder for the protagonists for selfish reasons.
My comic relief(and deuteragonist since he is some sort of sidekick) is a drunk 15 year-old who drinks just to remind himself that he'll die of drinking and not because of dying in war.
I got so spooked at one point in the video. You said something about Vampires and humans, and this is exactly what I'm working on. a story of vampires, humans and other supernatural beeings and cryptids. I was thinking the intire time and imagined my characters, while I was listening to see if the things I have in my story fit, and then you said that. damn that spooked me a bit
Thank you for some clarification and info. I have most of these characters and I don't have some of these character types at the moment. Just found your channel and already love listening to your stuff while working on my story, but I would like to stress that enforcing 12 specific character types as being necessary and or an improvement for a story can mislead young writers and even harm the quality of their works no matter if they're western comics or japanese manga. I'm writing a novel and in my story the Deuteragonist actually supports the main antagonist instead of the protagonist. He's friends with the protagonist but gets involved with the antagonist because she's helping him achieve his own personal goals.

I have a question. if you've ever game of thrones and how their arcs' with a huge character cast, would that be okay if a manga had that similar turnover ( hopefully not plagiarism ), or would that be confusing to the reader, viewers, and etc.
Can you make a video on how to make a story that someone has the same features as death note? I want to write something similar without copying it and I have no idea where to start
i also have a character they arent a villain but its a bully characyer who is mean because she was bullied all the time so she decided to become a bully when actually she is just sad Edit: she's a conflict character but she becomes good in the ed my story is a magical girl story so i might make her become a magical girl
Just watched the hero to villain video, nice chanel, you inspired me to do videos on my language about my proccess of writing and drawing. :D Thank you.
Sasuke from Naruto, Vegeta from Dragon Ball (tho he might not always be the deuteragonist in Dragon Ball), Kaiba from Yu-Gi-Oh, etc. Most of the rival archetype characters end up fitting the description when they end up being the deuteragonist of the story, but yeah that's not really a definite trait since there are tons of examples of deuteragonists that start off as best friends with the protagonist right of the bat, change sides pretty quickly before they could cause conflict or just never change their bond at all. There's also some cases where we might see a Tritagonist, which would be a tertiary protagonist that also has a major role in the plot but isn't as prominent as the protagonist or the deuteragonist.
The best antagonists I can think of that are evil for the sake of being evil are Frieza and the Joker Frieza does have his own goals but the way he went about achieving it was nothing short of pure evil
I recently found out about light novels and I want to start writing one but I unfortunately cannot draw to save my life. I can write really well and a lot tho. Any advice?
You help me I help you? I'm not the best drawer but Ill do my best to do some good work. I just can't write to well and I have no one to help me organize the mess in my mind but I'm like 30% of the way there I just don't have it all there cx And any practice drawing for me is always welcomed.
I have my love interest doing some major tasks that the protagonist couldn't do without her, because he screwed things up himself. So, I think if they work together, they can grow together without her appearing to just be a trophy. Of course I'd let the protagonist do the final blow in case of the big bads ;)
OMG I'm making notes while watching your video and after each introduction to a character I pause to write them down. And after you were talking about the conflict character I made myself example notes and also named Malfoy. After that I continued watching your video and JUST IN THAT MOMENT YOU NAME MALFOY LMAOOOOO WHAT btw I really really love your videos, I wanna write a novel and you're really helping me! Thank you so much! xx
Thank you so much!! I love it when those coincidences happen hahaha. Malfoy is a fantastic example of a conflict character 😊 I am also really happy that my videos are helping you. Thank you for your kind words and support! ✨
Hi Midnight Thanks so much for this video; really helped to clarify things. I do have a few questions regarding the Protagonist and Deuteragonist. -Is it possible to have multiples of both, for instance? Can I have 2 Protagonists in my story with their own Deuteragonists? -If you've got 2 major characters in the story; how can you tell which one would be the Protagonist and which the Deuteragonist? What is the definining line between them? -Finally in something like One Piece, where your main cast is a group of characters; would they all be Deuteragonists, or one of the other archetypes? Grateful for your thoughts!
Thank you so much!! I'm so happy that my video helped 😊 1- Yes, it is possible to have multiple of any character type in this video. Usually there won't be more than two protagonists though. However, I don't think you should limit yourself based on what is normal. If you feel like having more than one protagonist, then you should try it in your own series! 2- A protagonist is a character that the story is centered around and revolves around. In One Piece, it's clear that Luffy is the protagonist, since the whole story is mainly about him working to become pirate king. A deuteragonist is a character who supports the protagonist in their goals. The protagonists goals are the main goals of the story, and the deuteragonist works to help the protagonist. Like how Ron and Hermione assist Harry in defeating Voldemort. 3- I answered this question in another comment, so I decided to copy it here: For such a long series like One Piece, it can be hard to say.
@@midnightXcross That answers my questions perfectly! Thank you so much that really helps. I've got a much better understanding as to how to better structure my characters in my stories. Hopefully, it'll be enough to finally get me started on them!
questions. how do you create a character's birthday? or their past life date? or the date of the main story of the created characters? do you have a video about that?
I don't have a video on that, but it might be good to include this in a video in the future! Personally, when I am giving a character a birthday, I like making it on the date when I actually did create them. If you don't know this, you can give them a birthdate based on a star sign. Look up various star signs, and consider what traits may suit your character the most. Other dates can be decided when creating a time line for your story, which a video topic I plan to make very soon 😊
ill make a thing hwere there is a really hard villain to defeat because when you attack them the attack changed to dark and attacks back so its hard to defeat and they have to figure oyur how
I swear I been watching your videos for the last week even rewatching some of them just trying to get over my writers block and the more I watch the more I feel like i need to add to my light novel... sometimes I wish I had someone to bounce ideas off of... i wrote my story as books before a 6 book series but I lost all that work when my last computer decided to quiet on me. So over time I decided to change it into a light novel because I wanted to add to it more and maybe get considered to maybe get a manga made of it... but honestly the more I think the more I feel like i can't even write a good start to even get my feet off the ground. Sorry I talk to much wonderful content and honestly your videos are helping me reshape the world I had in mind and I hope one day I can actually get my head out of the clouds and back to earth to really start writing one day.
Hi I'm trying at one but the research is heavy since I'm a keep to myself woman trying to write a novel about a teenage boy. I want to write it for the challenge it gives me but I also want it to be good and relatable to teenage boys of this era. Since I'm twenty nine I actually don't know what teenagers of this era are doing the most.😅
what if there's no main antagonist, im thinking of writing story with the genre revolving around action, adventure and fantasy. i got this idea from when i watched "KINO NO TABI", but im not actually copying the plot of his travels, i like the idea of traveling and encountering conflicts along the way telling detailed story of his stay on the city, but im planning to be more in depth on each story, like one piece arcs, in where each travels has a main topic that may or may not be carried over the next part, like will the protagonist visit again or he will completely avoid the place again..
What if I made a story of 5 unpredictable protagonist?? It will be a long running comic so everyone will get their time to shine & readers will argue about who is the real protagonist. .
Hi Midnight X Cross! I am really struggling with making a good redemption arc with one of my characters. If you can make a video on it it will help more than you know!
I'm new to this channel, and this was extremely helpful. I had a mind block since yesterday and I wasn't sure how to start my story. I'll give you a sub for helping me.
Hi! I bearly subscribed and I had been having trouble to create the world for the storie of my manga I'm planning to make do you have any recommendations? it's about a half human half bunny girl model and a normal human who is her bodyguard/is the one who schedules her shootings I was planning to make her just maybe a human so the world is kinda like ours but I kinda want the world they live in like a world full of oc's do you have any video of yours or of anyone that can help me decide?
Yes, that's right! I may need to update this video with new information, as this video is very old. The antagonist and the villain can be separate. A villain can be any character with bad intentions. Whereas the antagonist can not only be a character, but a situation, an obstacle, or even your character's own fears. As long as it prevents the protagonist from reaching their goals, then it is an antagonist.
For a shounen. Just make a overpowered mentor like kakashi, urahara, and gojo. He will instantly become a fan favorite

I have a question. if you've ever game of thrones and how their arcs' with a huge character cast, would that be okay if a manga had that similar turnover ( hopefully not plagiarism ), or would that be confusing to the reader, viewers, and etc.
*Taking notes*.
Can you make a video on how to make a story that someone has the same features as death note? I want to write something similar without copying it and I have no idea where to start
That's a good idea! I can definitely make a video on that! 😊
@@midnightXcross thank you!! 😄❤️
i also have a character they arent a villain but its a bully characyer who is mean because she was bullied all the time so she decided to become a bully when actually she is just sad
Edit: she's a conflict character but she becomes good in the ed my story is a magical girl story so i might make her become a magical girl
I have come back 1 year later to say, what the bleep is this comment
thank you, this was very helpful!
I'm glad to hear that! Thank you. 😊
Just watched the hero to villain video, nice chanel, you inspired me to do videos on my language about my proccess of writing and drawing. :D Thank you.
Any example for Deutragonist that covers the 'creating conflict' part 🤔.
I agree. My protagonist and deutrogonist are best friends so I don't want to change it
Sasuke from Naruto, Vegeta from Dragon Ball (tho he might not always be the deuteragonist in Dragon Ball), Kaiba from Yu-Gi-Oh, etc.
Thank you for all of this GREAT info! Very helpful!
Thank you so much!! 😊
thank u for ur videos❤️
Glad you like them! 😊
The best antagonists I can think of that are evil for the sake of being evil are Frieza and the Joker
Frieza does have his own goals but the way he went about achieving it was nothing short of pure evil
Much thanks for this video
I recently found out about light novels and I want to start writing one but I unfortunately cannot draw to save my life. I can write really well and a lot tho. Any advice?
Maybe you can hire someone to draw for you.
You help me I help you?
I'm not the best drawer but Ill do my best to do some good work.
I just can't write to well and I have no one to help me organize the mess in my mind but I'm like 30% of the way there I just don't have it all there cx
And any practice drawing for me is always welcomed.
I have my love interest doing some major tasks that the protagonist couldn't do without her, because he screwed things up himself.
So, I think if they work together, they can grow together without her appearing to just be a trophy.
Of course I'd let the protagonist do the final blow in case of the big bads ;)
😲
I had not even notice that this video is about 40 min. until i thought, hey wasn´t she recording with natural ligth?. Very useful, thank you.
My antagonists have their own goal but they have no reason to. Thanks for this vid it gave me a lot to think about
Thank you very much! 😊
OMG I'm making notes while watching your video and after each introduction to a character I pause to write them down. And after you were talking about the conflict character I made myself example notes and also named Malfoy. After that I continued watching your video and JUST IN THAT MOMENT YOU NAME MALFOY LMAOOOOO WHAT
btw I really really love your videos, I wanna write a novel and you're really helping me! Thank you so much! xx
Thank you so much!! I love it when those coincidences happen hahaha. Malfoy is a fantastic example of a conflict character 😊
I am also really happy that my videos are helping you. Thank you for your kind words and support! ✨
THANK U FOR THE ADVICE
Thank you for this vid, really helps a lot
Can ypu drop an hour loop of your into music? It's a bop
My protagonist ia also an antagonist and is trying to recgonize that and become a better person
Thank you so much that helped me a lot!
my protagonist has a crush on the deuteroganist. Yea this video really helped.
Awesome! I'm so happy my video helped 😊
Hi Midnight
Thanks so much for this video; really helped to clarify things.
I'm so happy that my video helped 😊
1- Yes, it is possible to have multiple of any character type in this video.
3- I answered this question in another comment, so I decided to copy it here:
For such a long series like One Piece, it can be hard to say.
@@midnightXcross That answers my questions perfectly! Thank you so much that really helps.
I've got a much better understanding as to how to better structure my characters in my stories. Hopefully, it'll be enough to finally get me started on them!
that helped a lot. thank you so much
My main character is a kid so when I have a mabey battle they don't hurt the other person then the other character dies in a way I don't know yet
questions. how do you create a character's birthday? or their past life date? or the date of the main story of the created characters?
do you have a video about that?
I don't have a video on that, but it might be good to include this in a video in the future!
Personally, when I am giving a character a birthday, I like making it on the date when I actually did create them. If you don't know this, you can give them a birthdate based on a star sign. Look up various star signs, and consider what traits may suit your character the most.
Other dates can be decided when creating a time line for your story, which a video topic I plan to make very soon 😊
@@midnightXcross wow. okay. thank you so much 😁👍
ill make a thing hwere there is a really hard villain to defeat because when you attack them the attack changed to dark and attacks back so its hard to defeat and they have to figure oyur how
midnight-sensei.. am learning a lot from you.. keep it up.. :)))
sending love from the philippines..
Thank you so much!! 😊💖
You are so helpful thank you, your content is golden! ❤
Thank you! 💖💖
Great job
Thanks for the video
Thank you so much for watching!
I saw Kurumi Tokisaki, I Like... thanks for the Kurumi Clip, She's an Interesting character That is the Protagonist of her own story
Yess!! I totally agree 💖
Can you make a video on different anime/manga archetypes
Yes, I can do that!
i was watching this video to get better and ended up geting a whole story idea
Aw thank you so much! I am so pleased that you could get the idea for your story 😊😊
@@midnightXcross n thank you for helping and i got 2 ideas so yay
It will be a long running comic so everyone will get their time to shine & readers will argue about who is the real protagonist. .
me who killed of the parent in the 1st chapter
What is Nezuko in the Deamon slayers ? Deuteragonist ?
Haha I have a story just as long as one piece and all of this characters is like my characters.
So I am not alone ☺
YOU'RE THE BEST
My story don't have love interest because I don't like romance in my story. Friendship over love!

@@MrFourchords shut up. I can do what i want on my story. Toxic
@@MrFourchords no one care about your opinion
Is there any video that could help me write a good Anti-hero mc..?
Hi Midnight X Cross! I am really struggling with making a good redemption arc with one of my characters. If you can make a video on it it will help more than you know!
Sure, I can definitely do that! 😊
I would like to make a protagonist like akira fudo (devilman crybaby), a deuteragonist like killua (hxh) and of course a tritagonist like nobara (jjk)
That's a great idea! These are really awesome protagonists. 😊
I'm new to this channel, and this was extremely helpful. I had a mind block since yesterday and I wasn't sure how to start my story. I'll give you a sub for helping me.
Thank you so much for subscribing! I'm really happy that my video helped you. 😊

This sounds very interesting!! 😊 I have this video on world building that might help you: th-cam.com/video/z-ecvyeG198/w-d-xo.html
You know you’re good at character development when people start simping for the love interest
dam what if I have a character in my story that is the love interest, deuteragonist, and the antagonist at the same time.😭
Just do it. That's your own story. That's your choice
Lovely blue eyes this person has
Isn't an antagonist not always the villain? Can't they be separate?
Yes, that's right! I may need to update this video with new information, as this video is very old. The antagonist and the villain can be separate. A villain can be any character with bad intentions. Whereas the antagonist can not only be a character, but a situation, an obstacle, or even your character's own fears. As long as it prevents the protagonist from reaching their goals, then it is an antagonist.
That's it. If you guys don't like overpowered characters then don't you dare said that characters is useless
Why do characters have to relate to the audience or be realistic. If they are awesome and look then i like them
