Nice video, Lesley! Thanks! I'm overrun with Pine Siskins here in Nashville, TN. There have been a few Evening Grosbeak sightings nearby - I had one flyover at a nearby park - but I've never had one in my yard. Purple Finch and Red-breasted Nuthatch have all been around - now we need a Redpoll!

      Hello there Lesley,
I am loving all your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world.
I had a wonderful experience on October 28th. I had a small group of Wandering Grosbeak's have morning coffee with me. I really was awestruck. But I managed to get some pictures, and a very shaky video
      (no autographs though)
I'm going to report to e-bird right now.
      Thank you
      Happy birding😁

Hello Lesley! We live in Livelong Sk. For the past couple weeks we’ve been getting inundated with an Evening Grosbeak flock! They’re gorgeous, and love our feeders. I believe we’ve been seeing the “Red Pol” spelling? as well. I thought they might be Cassin’s, but not so sure now, since seeing this video with the Red Pol’s at the end.

I have admired the Evening Grosbeak since childhood; but at 54 years of age had resigned myself to the fact that I may never see one in person. At around 5:00 P.M. on November 2nd, my wife excitedly called me to our kitchen window. When I looked out, I saw approximately 8-10 Evening Grosbeaks eating black-oiled sunflower seeds underneath my mounted EcoTough Classic Bird Feeder. They were only there for approximately 30 minutes-and have not seen them since. What a thrill it was to see them up close after all these years of birding!! We live in the Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York. Thank you for your wonderful videos:)

My dad did for me thru a cardinal that landed on the windshield of my car while I was sitting in it. It looked right at me for a minute, chirped at me, then flew off. Lesley, thank you so much for posting this wonderful video! I have never seen an Evening Grosbeak. They are gorgeous. We get an occasional Rose-breasted Grosbeak at our feeders and I love seeing them. We live way out in the country, in the middle of 5,000 acres of peaches so I have been trying to attract the Orioles, even purchasing an Oriole feeder. Hopefully, this year we will get some. When we lived in the middle of a small town, we had so many lovely birds and I wonder why we don't have them out here. We only move 30 miles. We don't see the Cedar Waxwings, which we love, nor do we see the Indigo Buntings. Thanks for sharing your incredible talent with us. You are just amazing!

I've seen large flocks of Evening Grosbeaks and Pine Siskins this year. Your bucket story reminds me of an incident that happened a couple weeks ago. I had half of a container with seeds in it that I use to fill up the feeder sitting 20 or 30 feet from where I was hand-feeding the Black-capped Chickadees. One of the chickadees went over to investigate it. Instead of going in the container, the chickadee hopped around it, cocked its head, hopped up on the edge, hopped back down, looked around, and cocked its head again. It was so cute and so were those Evening Grosbeaks in the bucket!

Is Ebirds a better site to use over the Cornell lab’s Merlin Bird ID app? We are hooked on the Cornell app ans we use it daily to ID/report and count our bird sightings.

    • @LesleytheBirdNerd
      @LesleytheBirdNerd  3 ปีที่แล้ว

Both are great and are used for different things. It all depends on what you are doing. If you want to report a bird that you seen in your yard that, for an example is rare or uncommon for your area, eBird is the site to use. It is a database of bird observations providing scientists, researchers and amateur naturalists with real-time data about bird distribution and abundance.
If, however, you want to get an ID of a bird you just seen or took a photo of then Merlin Bird ID app is the one you want to use.
I hope this helps :) Happy birding

Evening Grosbeaks were early here this fall, started coming to the feeders in mid-Oct. We're in the Southern Adirondacks, Cold Brook, NY.

I haven't seen any of the birds on your video but I love learning about them. Thanks Lesley!
The Grossbeak is quite striking with its stripes, colors and beak.
They appear stocky to me. Glad they take care of the caterpillars -

Revisiting this video from a year ago. It seems it's another irruption year. Evening Grosbeaks have been widely reported across my home state of Pennsylvania once again. I have yet to see any although they are being reported in the county. I have the feeders full! Love your videos, Lesley! Keep up the great work.

You're so lucky to have grossbeaks ! Here we occasionally get a black/red grossbeak and it's always a lone male and it just makes my week to see one at my feeder.

@@LesleytheBirdNerd ah I think you are right. I forgot what they were called as they are so rare at our property but I've looked them up in my bird book before. Its either red or rose colored. They are truly beautiful and I love the large beaks they have as they snatch seeds. Very beautiful but so rare and we definitely don't have the numbers or breed you have. I think you are the lucky one haha.

We've got a farm in Meadowlands, MN and have seen groupings of Evening Grosbeaks as large as 50! What a treat. They're currently regulars, and often get swarmed by them. We were getting Pine Siskins in groups up to 25 and for one week saw a few Redpolls. eBird is such a wonderfully scientific tool to use to keep track of bird migration!

These are rare here in Richmond, Virginia, but I keep hearing about sightings. Finally this morning I spotted them - a flock of 26 or more at the edge of a wooded area. And some of them were pilfering chicken feed from a backyard chicken coop too. Such incredibly charming birds; I was so delighted to finally get to see them. Thanks, Lesley, for the insight into why they've been showing up here in Virginia this year!

My feeder in Southern Manitoba has seen, White and Red breasted Nuthatch, Chicadee's, Gold Finch, Purple Finch and House Finch. The gang of 5 Bluejays is dominting the feeder and just hauling all the seeds away. A single female Pine Grossbeak stopped in for a snack of Ash tree seeds the other day. Hopeing for more Pine Grossbeaks, Redpolls. The Hairy and Downy woodpeckers are also around. I have never seen and even Grossbeak here, maybe this year. The Bohemians would be a treat too. Hopefully they will wait till I get my new camera. Cheers.

Haha same here there are a few neighborhood jays who have claimed the feeders. Still doesnt prevent the goldfinches, grosbeaks, chickadees and other birds from getting their share to though. Hopefully you'll see bohemian waxwings, and me too.🤞🐦

This video is so timely! I recently noticed birds at my platform feeder that I had never seen before. They were evening grosbeaks! I built the platform feeder for the red breasted grosbeaks that live here, I had never seen evening grosbeaks before. They are stunning! What a gift to see them. They only stuck around for a couple of days. I hope they return again in the future. How amazing that they can live so long too. I live an hour south of Rochester, NY.

We have a giant flock in our back yard. They are all over my deck and in my feeders. I just love watching them and seeing their different colours and markings. They are all such individuals. Lots of blue jays here too along with yellow and purple finches. I can’t forget the chickadees and nut hatches and my little woodpecker. It has been very entertaining at the feeders this year. My cat’s are loving birdwatching through the window. My little Oushi comes crying to me when they have left. I think he thinks of them as his friends.

Winter of 2018/2019 evening grosbeaks literally invaded my feeders, really sweet to see them here in eastern Ontario not far from the Quebec border. I happily fed the flock of around 30 birds plus my other regulars all winter. This year I’ve only got.one pair coming every day, so far. I’ve also had the BlueJays and even Chickadees fly into my pails to get the peanuts they can’t wait for me to load into the feeder as I always wipe them down first. Very sweet to see a little Chickadee take a small piece of peanut and fly off to the nearest tree to enjoy it.
