- I hae finally moved to New York last February 2023 ! As always, I am documenting the hunt and moving process, this time mostly visually (not much talking during the moving process). How extraordinary it is to find myself in the city I never imagined I would live in so soon. I cannot stop thanking God for all the ups and the downs of the journey leading me here, and for whatever will follow. I also thank my best friend and mentor Emmanuel who has been with me all throughout and was a constant support and help.
Most of my belongings were purchased on Amazon, but I would be happy to send you more informations if you so request.

Sarah, this video made me so emotional for you. I remember so clearly the video of you sitting at the basketball court in London, telling us how it was going for you so far, and talking about the rooms you had to rent. That was before my own journey moving to London to model from growing up in NY (we kind of swapped places!) and your video gave me so much hope. My next goal is to make enough money in this career to be able to have a place of my own and experience the joy of decorating my space, as we’ve watched you have in these past moving videos. Oh my ! Absolutely ! I even hesitated to bring it to my former home because it was just there waiting under a tree. What’s more, when I asked a stranger if she would be so kind to help me lift it a block away, then one floor up, she accepted !! And she even refused the compensation I offered (I still invited her to dinner later).
When I first came to NY, one of the great things I noticed was the kindness of strangers. This woman (Epiphany is her name) was the very proof I was seeing right 🥰

I LOVE what you've done with such a small space. It's so light and uncluttered! Broker fees are not a normal part of American apartment hunting except for NY. Maybe somewhere else but it's not typical. I've lived in Detroit, Seattle, and now LA and I've never had to deal with that, thankfully!
Oh my, I'm glad to learn about this ! I really thought it was countrywide. Then these people really are taking wicked advantage of the thousands of aspiring New Yorkers in an already expensive city. Mean !

I would actually recommend this plant ! I have failed to water it properly twice for long stretches of time (up to 3 weeks) because of work, and after shedding its leaves, new ones sprouted as soon as it was watered again.
It’s a bonsai from Home Depot.
I love the table you chose and the placement of it. Nice that it doubles as a kitchen work surface. Congrats on the apartment, I hope you will be safe & happy there.
Thank you ! It’s really playing the Sims abundantly that has helped me develop good interior arranging skills, haha ! It does pain if I’m doing lengthy cooking, but it’s so much better than none !

Oh my ! Yes, yes, it is hard but definitely possible. One advice I would have, if you have the time, is to not waste any energy on any apartment that you're unsure of from the pictures, I mean when it comes to your standards. Of course, there could be a chance that a photo misrepresents a unit, but it's quite rare when from the get go, it just doesn't look right enough. This way, you focus all your energy on waiting and actually viewing the apartments with enough potential.
When I would give a chance to some apartments in the hope of a good surprise, I was viewing exactly what was expected.
Also, make it clear when you contact the people behind the ads of your situation with all the things you do and do not have to avoid disappointment after having invested time and effort.

I didn't check FB marketplace (also I don't have a car) but all the thrift shops I visited were so pricey ! I would enter in one whenever I randomly passed by or look them up online, and didn't find anything affordable. I don't think I really knew where to look, really. Any recommendation ?

@@austinlamby hahaha ! The beauty of embellishing life through esthetics, ha ! New York is nice and has amazing opportunities, but definitely be ready for the dirt, the smells and the lack of greenery. If you can do with this, absolutely do come if you can/wish.
It’s undoubtedly necessary to hold a balanced perspective, though I am definitely helped to not forget nor lose hope !
And yes, a piano is essential !!! I so wish for one, particularly the one I had in London. But I think I might settle for a little more portable one, at the very least.

Great video! Loved what you did with your small space. It looks so cozy. Broker fees in NYC were banned in 2020 but it's being appealed in the courts. Honestly, the building owner should be paying those fees IF the broker sources applicants but anyone showing up for a listing shouldn't be paying a broker that does NOTHING but watch the apartment while people view it, is thievery. Glad you found your happy home. This was such a zen video. Thank you.
Yes that is exactly what I was thinking ! All fine to pay them when they actually service you in more ways than doing the bare minimum of showing off an accommodation for no longer than 5 minutes, and they’re often on a rush too. Nonsense !

Great video Sarah! Did you sell your piano from London and all your belongings? I am always so stressed to move and get rid of old things and get new ones. I like your ways, you seem cool and relaxed about moving!
Ahhhh, I was so not relaxed at first !!! I cried at the idea to separate myself with all my carefully chosen belongings in London, and that exceptional flat as well !! But as my life does not revolve around my accommodation, I learned to dissociate myself and focus on my actual professional and life goals. So, yes I sold all I could, and have kept the very few unsold and small items in storage, along with other belongings. Also, it’s quite heartbreaking because many of my old things sold for less than 1/3 of their value :’).
This is why this time around I have chosen to buy more affordable furniture on easy website (mostly Amazon, as mentioned a thousand times in the video). My pricier items are my mattress ($796 on sale) and my bed frame ($488). The rest was not exceeding $200. This way, I’m already less attached to everything. I won’t invest in anything pricier of tougher quality until I actually settle somewhere for at least 5-10 years. That probably won’t happen until I plan to be a mother, ha !

I'm quite strict when it comes to cleanliness, if I did, it could be that the boxes were new or that I was to do laundry afterwards. I totally get you. Like shoes in the house ? No, no. Haha.
And yes, indeed. In fact, I really did not want to listen to him at first, but I too am very glad I did at the end because I now feel so good in here, and though it's expensive in comparison with a studio of this size in most cities, it's definitely cheaper than the regular apartments on the NY market !

Very exciting. I move near there later this year and kept wondering if I should live alone or find a roommate. Scary. I might have to stay in a hotel or Airbnb while I search for a place
Indeed ! NYC is not the safest of places, but it’s also not the worst at all if one has enough wits and common sense to avoid obvious dangers. Well… I say this but on my very first day in NY, I got indirectly robbed of my freshly charged Metro Card. No assault involved whatsoever, but yeah, my naivety and newness in the city caused my loss :’)
Other than this tiny incident (which was refunded by the MTA), it’s been lovely !
Also, to live alone or with people really is a personal preference. I truly thrive in my own clean space. Others do with company. But don’t let fear drive you off ; assess the dangers, the pros and the cons, and see if making such a step is worth it :)
You dont have to use a broker to find an apartment here, lol. Maybe in new york its more common but here in california you just google rentals, call up the agency and ask for a tour. The only fee we have to pay is an application fee and the most I've had to pay for one is $30
Yes, that's what I'm used too as well. According to people in the comments, it appears that it's a very NY thing, unfortunately for us !

Glad you were able to find an apartment but a broker fee is ATYPICAL for most of America. I live in Texas and have NEVER paid anything like that. The only thing I can compare that to is maybe a rental home deposit, which is usually equal to the 1st month's rent. However - that's for an entire house LOL. Usually for an apartment, you will pay a deposit ($500 max) and then an application fee which is about $50 bucks or so. You may pay a bit more or less depending on how many people are on the lease etc. But long story long... lol - NO that is a NY thing only. And it's utterly ridiculous for the space most New Yorkers have. Good luck!
Wait, we pay deposits (we're talking about the same thing, right ? The one they refund you at the end if all went well) too but they are generally the same price as a month's rent (same for London, UK). Are you telling me that it is different in Texas ??
And yeah, I've learned in this comment section that the broker's fees are typically a New York thing, unfortunately for us. But I'm so glad for the rest of you that you don't have to deal with this nonsense !

It's not so much a program, but the Sims 4 game on computer :D Actually, now it's free and you can download on thesimsresource.com free custom contents, so if you're patient to get used to it, it could be a nice tool !
