I’ll never forget Mike Schmidt’s HR against the Expos. I was 15 years old and already had been a Phillies fan for years due to my Dad who had been a fan of the Phils back in the ‘40s and ‘50s. I listened to Schmidt hit that homer on my old clock radio am channel barely picking up the station from Philly. The series that followed then with the Astros and Royals were highlights of my teenage life.
I just remember my father and I yelling when Garry Maddox caught that line drive for the last out of game 5 of the NL Championship. My Mother was yelling at us to be quiet. We would disturb the neighbors. As I no longer have my parents it brings tears to my eyes. One of the best father - son moments with my dad who got me following the Phils in 1975.
Wasn't it awesome? I was 14 years old and I lived in Eastern NJ. I lived near no Phillies fans but went out in the street and screamed anyway. Great days. with a far superior "P" logo!

So glad they won the series....I just knew I was going to sink into a depression if they lost. It would have been awful. I was in my senior year at Rutgers Camden....several of us skipped class, took the High Speed Line across the Ben Franklin Bridge and went to the parade. It was wonderful.
I was 10 at the time and a Pete Rose fanatic. Game 5 left indelible images for the rest of my life as well. I'm from NC, but I can still name the entire lineup of this Phillies team today.

A lot of people forget that the Phillies had to win two in Montreal to win the division at the very end of the regular season. Those games were nail biters. I watched every inning of those games little realizing the NLCS would be the same with even more intensity. A very memorable season indeed.
I was born in 79 & im a Philly boy. I do remember the 83 Phillies being everywhere all over Philly. 93 had a great team too & of course 08 was just pure magic.
You'll notice that Harry Kalas voiced over the World Series clips. That was done weeks after the Series was over because the World Series had a national radio contract. If you tuned into WCAU, you had Vin Scully and Sparky Anderson. You see, CBS Radio had discontinued the practice of using local broadcasters after the 1978 Series. The uproar over not having Kalas live led MLB to allow the home teams in the Series broadcast and produce their own games live over the radio starting in 1982.
The 1980 NLCS was incredible... Games 4 and 5 in particular... The Phillies had a very good team prior to 1980. Signing Pete Rose was instrumental in getting them over the top...
Yes I totally agree! The 77 and 78 teams relief pitching was horrendous in the playoffs..and their offense couldn't come back ..but this 1980 team this team came back in almost every game in September and October..Still my favorite Phillies team

Boone and Rose... the most iconic moment in Phillies baseball history... symbolic of this classic, scrappy Phillies team that worked so well together. With all his flaws, you gotta love Rose. He went out there to win, and no one was going to stop him. I would hate to have been a catcher blocking the plate when he came storming into home.
It's an all-time highlight, but it never should have happened. That was Rose's ball from the start. He should have called Boone off and made the clean catch. He was there in plenty of time, and Boone was standing under it wondering where Rose was and why he wasn't calling for it.
The HR by Schmidt against Expos cannot be forgotton. I was 17; remember the day, where I was, and how I reacted...it was awsome. The Houston/Philly series was the best I've ever seen--a nail biter every game--arguably the greatest playoff series ever. After that series, I was sure the KC would not win. Steve Carlton, Schmiddy, The Bull, Rose, Maddox, Trillo, Bowa...this was a great, great team. Never forget Tugger slappin' his glove on his leg; he manned up big time...RIP.

1980 was really Mike Schmidt's coming out season in the public consciousness. Even though he was a consistent home-run champ and Gold Glove winner in the 1970's, he wasn't even being elected as an All-Star Game starter at 3rd base. Greg Luzinski ("The Bull") was actually the more popular slugger for the Phillies, partly due to his ability to hit .300). He had a major slump in 1980 though while Schmidt had his first MVP season. Still nice to see Bull do it in playoffs, then Schmidt in Series.
He had a great year but his cocaine addiction clearly was a factor as he set the world series record for strikeouts. Everybody was striking out Willie Wilson in that series. That Royals team is a much better team than they get credit for and largely hate to say it cuz of Wilson. When the second best hitter on your team is batting like he's in the 9-hole you're probably done

The Expos were cheated by that unfortunage Lock Out in '94. Everybody on Earth just knew the Expos were going to win it that year.

The craziest thing about McGraw striking out Willie Wilson was, Wilson had like 200 hits as a switch hitter-so he had had a great year that year.
