PART 1: "The Legend of Dr Foote" (Lawrence County, Indiana)

A Doctor. A Lawyer. The Father of Lawrence County’s limestone industry. Eccentric and mysterious to many, this is the story of a legendary man.
In October of 1818, a mysterious man rode his horse into Lawrence County Indiana. Upon arriving at Palestine, he told people he was a Dr from the east, and set up a small practice, in the tiny frontier village. But he was no ordinary Dr.
Dr Winthrop Alvin Foote was known to swim across the White River, when he heard that someone was sick, on the other side. Being the only physician in Lawrence County, he would often ride his horse, up to 70 miles, to see a patient. He saw the needs, and he filled the needs, as if he had some kind of superpower.
When the town needed someone to plaster Palestine’s new, two-story courthouse, he did the entire job by himself. Realizing the town needed a prosecuting attorney, he passed the Indiana bar and took the job, putting the lawless in jail. And when many people began dying from a strange illness, he used his legal knowledge and influence, to move the town to a more healthy location: what would become modern day Bedford, Indiana.
Dr Foote became a businessman, amassed over 3,000 acres, in Lawrence and surrounding counties, and opened the first limestone quarry in Indiana. Subsequent quarries would not only become world-renowned, by providing high-quality limestone building blocks, for iconic monuments and buildings, but would continue to this day, nearly 200 years later. He had an uncanny vision of the future, and prophesied a day that others could not see, a day when Indiana limestone would be used hundreds of miles away from Lawrence County.
But who was this mysterious man from the east, that could seemingly do anything, and put so many things into motion, with only his will? This is the story of Lawrence County’s mysterious, Dr Foote.

Six generations of my family have called Lawrence County their home. I’ve published these videos as a way of paying tribute to them and others that have lived here!
I’ll post the Lawrence County playlist below. To my knowledge, no one else has posted this much about the county’s rich history, but it’s been a very enjoyable journey!

This was the most difficult documentary I’ve ever done. It took over 4 months to do, and although I wanted to tell a hero story, it was anything but. I ended up telling a story about a man obsessed with death, and trying to save a brother that had long passed. And once he realized that no amount of education or skill, could save his own family, he crumbled. But, it told a story about how humans try and fail, even those we put on a pedestal.

I was originally going to do it all at once, but soon realized how huge it was! It ended up a 3 part miniseries, with an ending I never saw coming. Was blessed to find an author that had studied Dr Foote for over two decades. I’d write a segment screenplay, send him a copy, then I’d call to see if it made sense. It was really something to assemble!

      Hey Kru!
I’m hanging in there. Had some non Covid health issues for about a month, but have been filming and editing since then. This Dr Foote part 2 has been a monster. He was a very complex guy and portraying the history has been challenging. But it will be done soon!
I have 5 other segments “in the can” that are much lighter and more fun in nature. Someone asked me about doing a segment about old mom and pop ice cream places, and I have filmed 7 of them so far. Think I’ve put on five pounds from sampling the goods! 😀

I am just finding this video! Nathan Hall was my great-great-grandfather. His eldest daughter and my great-grandmother Josephine Hall married my great-grandfather George Madison Clark, a newspaper editor in Topeka. He died young of tuberculosis and she later took her son and my grandfather Nathaniel George Clark to Denver and built a home there at 4141 Xavier Street. Josephine Hall Clark grew up in Bedford with her 11 siblings and at one time lived in Otis Hall mansion. Nathan Hall was one of the founders of the Blue Hole limestone quarry in Bedford. How can you not mention his name in this video?

    • @AdventureswithRoger
      @AdventureswithRoger  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Anita!
In my many months of research, editing and consulting, with two Lawrence County historians, the name “Nathan Hall” was never mentioned as part of the Dr Foote story. The blue hole quarry in Bedford was said to have been started by Dr Foote and Samuel Tobin, a stonecutter from Kentucky, both being dead and gone by 1856. I suspect that Nathan operated the blue hole quarry afterward, which is beyond the scope of Dr Foote’s story.
I did a quick search of Nathan Hall in Bedford and found two by that name. One was born in 1828 and would’ve been late 20’s when Dr Foote died. The other was born in 1851, and would’ve only been about 5 years old. Are either of these the Nathan you’re referring to?

From about 95-00 I spent a lot of my summer around the tomb riding dirt bikes and AtVs. NEVER knew who's property it was or if it was legal or not to be there. So we alway kept it clean and cleaned up after others. We used to go to the tomb and burn out all the weeds around it and sit on the walls and drink cokes and rest. Such and nice place to grow up and hang out now that I look back. I heard someone knocked the stone over a few years back.

Word has it that the tomb itself is on city property, the land next to it is private property. I parked at the gas station and walked the road that curves down to it. It opens up to a parking lot. To the right is private property, to the left goes to the grave in a short walk. I drove to the parking lot the first time and the bottom of my car dragged on the place where you drive down. If you have a truck, you’re probably fine to drive it.

The monument itself is *very* similar to another found mostly in India, known as a Lingam or Shiva Lingam in Hinduism. The only real difference it being square with angles and topped with a pyramid (likely Masonic influences). The lingam is more cylindrical sitting in the center of a round disk (Yoni), which is formed to catch liquid offerings poured on top of the lingam. The Shiva Lingam is a representation of Lord Shiva, the masculine and feminine, the merge of the macrocosm with the microcosm and his infinite cycle of destruction and regeneration.
