This was a love letter to his people. Yes, he talks about his fans and loves all of them. His fans are diverse. But this track was a love letter to his people, his culture and specifically, Black men. (Notice he doesn't address Black women directly). The people who are reflected in the deep fakes represent Black men who try to rise above the oppression and make it, but then get slammed down in different ways. He feels their pain but he's telling his people keep the love but get rid of the self destruction. In the beginning of his song Kendrick mentions perspectives. What you got out of this track is valid because it's your perspective. There are no wrong or right answers other than he clearly has something to say about the destruction in the so-called Black community. He wants something more for his people. Different people have made songs about what Kendrick rapped about it. Nothing he said is news to anyone. But maybe this track hits hard because now the people are willing to listen. They're waking up. He's the messenger. We are here/hear for it.
Y’all be catching part of the message, he also discusses how the system is fucked up and is designed to fuck us over and he understands that it will be extremely difficult to destroy the cycle. It is an important part of the song. He isn’t just saying stop the negativity like it is easy. He is explaining how this nation and our history is what has us in this state and how a lot of these built in things are still in place and are a cycle but trying to bring attention to it so that we can begin the process of reversing this cycle and mindset that a lot of people in this country hope we stay in and work to keep us in.

Music is literally art. Its funny how everyone perceives different things from it, just like when you're in an art gallery, you can be looking at the same mural as someone standing right next to you, and see two completely different things. What I took from the Will Smith line is, that we are ALL hurt people, and when were hurting we naturally hurt others as well. Also, LOOK WHAT IVE DONE FOR YOU... Will Smith has down tremendous things for the black community, and he's basically saying, Ive done all this for y'all, and y'all are so quick to "cancel" me....

Kendrick shows us in this song that he is not afraid to identify with the unlovely parts of humanity and specifically the black culture. He is a poet and this is a deep self reflection where the self is both a personal and an extended self.
Why did Justin or OJ or even Will in more recent times commit the acts they did - I Want You to Want Me Too.... Connection - its what people want, and when it is not met from who they want it from, they get triggered. Triggering people is never pleasant - far less people with deep seated issues and up to this point in history, Black people have been carrying some of the heavier frequencies in this matrix....so much more that can be said on that.
But, it is also evident that he believes there is a purpose and that behind all of it - there is a plan that is deeply embedded in Love. This you see in his verse tribute to Nipsey. Whether this is a romamtic notion - that there is purpose behind the chaos, is unimportant. What is important is that we believe it into knowing it - so that we can dig our way out of the murky depths of despair and rise into a destiny that we lovingly choose for ourselves.

The whole second verse was about mental health and it’s a reason why he started with OJ Simpson and then went to Kayne West. What’s the connection? The Kardashian Family. Let that sink in. The Jessie S. part was more than him just speaking on the situation. He was just trying to represent for the LGBTQ community but went about it the wrong way. In Kendrick words “The streets got me fucked up, I’m trying to represent for us.” It’s a lot deeper than most people think. I understand why people glossed over Jessie part. I did too at first because I’m not a member of their community but I get it.
