I spent all morning looking for a good video on how to protect my chickens with insulation…or not. This is an excellent video. Thank you for this.
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching!
I did a similar thing. I used roll insulation, applied it with liquid nails, then used a staple gun to panel, with the thinnest paneling I could find, and paneled over the insulation on the inside of the coop... As I was assembling. It was easier, but it keeps the chickens from pecking the insulation. My chickens seem to love to challenge anything I attempt for their own good! Lol... I wasn't chancing them eating the insulation...
Thanks for the tip on the reflected tape!
You bet!
Thank you! I've been trying to figure out how to do this
Thank you for watching! 💖
Hey Tessa! I have 31 hens, 5 Roosters & 2 ducks, the hawks are horrible this year! I almost lost a couple hens the last few days. I’m keeping them in their covered run for a few days, I love having them free range my yard but Geesh them hawks are horrible 😞 I actually watched a Hawk go after my splash Americana hen & by the time I got close to her, the Hawk landed on top of her I was running, yelling & flagging my arms & it saw me & flew off her. The Hawk never hurt her..phew..so I grabbed my meal worms, shook the bag said COME ON GIRLS… they all came running to the covered chicken run…thank god I have them trained for meal worms! 🙌 their just gonna have to stay in the covered run for a while.
This happens at our coop this time of year as well. I like to leave them inside for a week or two straight to deter the hawks from hanging around. I also will move my decoys and flashy items around so they know they’re not stationary. You can also play music at the coop to give the hawks a bit of a fright! -Tessa
@@MeyerHatchery hi Tessa! Yes I have 2 radios playing 24/7… that helps big time, I also bought meat birds from Meyer Hatchery & they were processed on September 22nd. (Excellent birds!) 😊 I came home & I saw a Hawk sitting on top of my chicken tractor like….how can I get in… 😂 🤦🏻♀️ since I had 2 hens almost get taken by the Hawk, I have kept them in there covered run. I will definitely keep them in for a few weeks. Thank you for the videos! I love learning from others on to keeping our babies safe! Love talking chicken also 😁
It sounds like you're giving your flock everything they need to stay safe :)
The hawks circle my property and even sit in the tree next to the house.. so close I figure they are going to knock on the door … lol
“Can ur birds come out n play?”””
i did this and like it! the only thing im struggling with is the chickens pecking up the tape.
Thanks Chicky..!
Great idea, thanks!
Thanks for watching, Linda!
Thank you thank you thank you…I am a raw materials hoarder and my wife has been raising her eyebrows at this pile of folded blue apron bags for a year now :)
You're welcome! That's a great way to repurpose those insulated bags!
Hang old reflective CD disc's from trees etc to ward off predators.
This is a great idea! Thanks for sharing!
Yeah, hang rap music on the trees, hawks hate rap music
Thanks for the video. Would you recommend this insulation for 4 hens in a small coop like the one you demonstrated in a place where the temperature dips down to -40 with windchill?
Thanks for your question! Yes, we do recommend this insulation for protection against extreme cold temperatures. Just be sure to leave the ventilation opening uncovered.
If it's plastic like bubble wrap, chickens, mine anyway,, will destroy it. They put dents in pie pans and other metal items lol. I even had shower curtains on back wall of coop for when they're on roosting bars at night for easy cleaning, had to remove what was left day 3. Even the nest pads with paper backing doesn't stand a chance :/
Oh my goodness! Chickens can be curious. This insulation is very thick, glossy plastic and it’s been in the coop for about two weeks and no one has pecked at it yet! Fingers crossed! -Tessa
@@MeyerHatchery cool! I know you're busy but if you get the chance and a month or so could you give us an update on how it's holding up with the chickens? Also do you have full sized chickens or Bantam? Thanks so much
Absolutely! This particular coop has bantams in it, but my other coops have the insulation as well and they house quail and standard size birds. -Tessa

I'm in NJ I just got my first Chickens yesterday. Will this work in my areas winters?
Thank you so much for watching! Yes this would work great for NJ!
Do you remove this for summer?
Thank you for watching and asking! If the insulation is not blocking off ventilation, it does not need to be removed in the summer.
@@MeyerHatchery ok cool! I'm totally doing this on mine. Doing a test panel first to make sure they don't eat it
A link would be helpful..or at least the Name Brand you used
Thanks for your question! You can find a similar reflective insulation here: amzn.to/44PWgWm
@@MeyerHatchery that particular product keeps the heat out so it's for very hot summers. Does it work both ways? Loved this video, thank you!
@@MeyerHatchery can you give us the type of tape that was used to secure the insulation & the brand name or a link?
what is the insulation material called? can we get it at a hardware store or amazon?
This is reflective insulation and you can find many brands if you do a search for them!
Can I use these on metal coop walls?
Thanks for asking! Yes, this can be used on metal walls.
@@MeyerHatchery thank you, could you tell me what brand of double silver that was used?
Can you paint it? So it isn’t reflective and attractive? I have a blind hen that can see light and dark so this could confuse her, I know my nosey hens will peck the insulation. 🫣
I am going to have to buy some thin panel for the roof but the walls 🫣
Thanks for asking! The reflective insulation is not intended to be painted, but some paint brands may be able to stick to it. I would recommend to use a thin board over the top of the insulation to both protect it from your curious hens and to give you a smooth paintable surface.
