  • The Slieve Bloom Way is one of Ireland's 42 waymarked trails. It is a 70-80km looped backpacking trail around the Slieve Bloom Mountains which borders the counties of Laois and Offaly. The trail is vast and there are many different types of terrain. Usually the trail is completed over two and a half days and I carried all the food that I needed. I have a video of what I packed for this hike which I will link below. I hope this video shows how stunning this trail really is and helps you to plan your journey.

      Ah it was great, I will be doing it again. Fair play, both lovely areas up there. The Glenbarrow red route is one I have done a lot. I'm in the process of trying to persuade my wife to tag along on a hike but she is having none of it 😄 Thank you for watching 👍

    Great day 1 hike, looking forward to day 2. Cows won't normally bother you unless they very young calves nearby. If you see a bull avoid.

    • @RamblingOn
      @RamblingOn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers and thanks very much for the advice. I definitely would not go near a field with a bull but I will definitely keep that in mind about the calves. I would happily walk 5-10km out of my way to avoid that situation 😄 All the best 👍

    Great stuff! Best vid re the trail on TH-cam really outlining the character of subsequent sections. And yeah, these numerous gates around Clonaslee - there was no way for me to fit into these little passages with a 3-day pack :)

      Ah thank you very much Witek, high praise. As you know yourself, there is so much more to see, I could never possibly show it all in a video.. Such a great trail. The forestry in part two is stunning.. Just stunning 😁

    Wow man that is a lot miles to lay down in a day! Looks like you've really dialed in your pack. That looked like a great load out. Some of that area reminded me of places I hike over here across the pond. Really nice job on the video, always a pleasure. 🤙

    Well done Jason - that was a lot of walking for one day! Your meal looked like great nourishment after the long hike and negotiating with the occasional cow. I’m sure your bivvy was a treat to hop into after your long day! Look forward to seeing how Day 2 unfolded for you 👏

      Thanks Miriam.. Yeah I didn't know how far I could go or what sort of pace I would have with the bag on my back so I learned a lot. The cow was a challenge for me I am not gonna lie I almost checked for a different route 😆

    Cows and horses are amongst the most timid animals you'll see in Ireland and both are aware that they can trample you, so they make sure not to. They will walk around any obstacle, including humans.

    Fair play Jason fantastic video well done that walk is on my to do list,I was thinking of trying out dehydration meals is it a lot of effort

    • @RamblingOn
      @RamblingOn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks very much.. The dehydrated meals are great, I am still figuring them out. I bought myself a dehydrator and gave it a go. It saves on weight, the meal weighed 400g less when it was dehydrated. It packs down smaller and it doesn't go off for months. The way I rehydrated it worked great but there could be a quicker way to do it. You can buy pre packed dehydrated meals that as far as I know only take a few minutes to rehydrate and have loads of calories etc for hiking but I did it the hard way 😄 I also thought it would be cheaper in the long run and I wouldn't have to explain to my wife why it was absolutely essential that I buy €30 worth of dehydrated meals every time I did a waymarked trail 😅

    Great video, much enjoyed. Was surprised how much that countryside looks like the Oregon Coast here. I want to do this but had knee surgery at the start of the year so prolly still not a good idea for me to walk 21 miles in a day :D Gotta have that tea, love it

    • @RamblingOn
      @RamblingOn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not a good idea for anyone in their right state of mind to do that sort of mileage 😄 You could skip the walk and just have the tea, thats always an option. Thanks very much, all the best 👍

    I need to do this walk!
    Dehydrating food just so you can carry the water to hydrate it back? 😀

    • @RamblingOn
      @RamblingOn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is fairly class to be fair.. Yeah the idea of those meals is to carry it dehydrated which is 400g lighter and a lot smaller packsize than before it was dehydrated and then your supposed to pick up water near the end of the day to add in. I'm completely new to them so I need to work on the rehydrating but ideally you'd just add in some drinking water, which you would have regardless, when you set up camp and a while later it would be ready. Its something I'll get to grips with but it was class having a decent meal at the end. Definitely do this trail, it's fantastic 👍

    Was there many spots to wild camp with access to water along this trail ?I’ve been on the fence about doing it thanks

    • @RamblingOn
      @RamblingOn  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      There are plenty of spots along the trail to wild camp, it really depends on how confident you are. I wasn't very confident myself which limited my options as a fair few spots were within sight of the trail.
      There's a lot of water sources but the main thing is to have a good water filter, I'd even suggest a Grayl filter because of the amount of farmland on this trail.
      If I was to re do the trail I'd do it over three days, I'd carry a Grayl filter and I'd use a one person tent. You shouldn't have much trouble finding a camp spot close to a water source but having a bit more water capacity again will increase your options.
      Sorry for the long winded response 😄
