    The seagrass issue is an EU directive, they are trying to regenerate the fish nurseries. I read on one of the other sailing channels that it is difficult to anchor in the Balearics without getting a visit from the "plant police"

    • @svfairisle

You certainly could not find your anchor on the sea bed in the Mar Menor even in 3 meters of water. I swam straight into the keel of the boat several times while trying to clean the growth off it! It happens so often. We find a nice quiet bay, drop anchor in a the corner, get out a beer. Next minute another yacht appears and needs to anchor as close to us as he can !
    Maybe safety in numbers ?
    And like the guy in this video, with his Delta (I always use Deltas, got a 25k and a 20k on board) they'll drop until anchor's lying on the sea bed.
    If my anchor doesn't stop me going astern with at least half engine revs, it ain't gonna stop me dragging whilst shearing about in a gale. Dig It In.

    Humm the old seagrass card..... Unfortunately there is now a realization in the Med that playing that card and the "mooring ball only" trick you are directed to the Marinas or have to pay for the mooring. (Check the paperwork, they take no responsibility for the mooring failing!!!!) We have noticed it a lot since we last sailed the Med 20 years ago. There are a lot of places you can still anchor making sure you do so in sand but they are becoming fewer. Further east is better. We managed 180 days at anchor last year and only 12 in marinas. But where the anchorages are few your find the marina prices are higher. :-) Lewmar "Delta" anchor makes a good paper weight, but thats all. There is a reason its called a plough anchor! Get a Spade (French), Manson Supreme or the latest Mantis. The Manson is the best Anchor we have had in 35 years. Our Delta is in the lazarette, until we can find a farmer that needs a few furrows turning over :-) Sail Safe Guys, Ant, Cid & the pooch crew.

    • @svfairisle
      @svfairisle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Seagrass went to be an entangled expecie because massive moorings, and lack of protection of any kind, so it is not a card it is a need to protect it as it is fundamental for ecosystems and even to keep the shape of the coast line.

    Delta isn't a great anchor in terms of relative holding power, so your neighbour not only didn't have a set anchor, but not a great one anyway. 1/4 the holding power for similar size to new generation anchors. Delta is a development of the CQR, omitting the hinge.

They are wool buffers that help stop sail chafe. When you're running with thewind with the boom a long way out as you would be sailing in the trades for days on end the sail can rub against the stays and that will lead to chafe. Great example too of why it's important to make sure your anchor is bedded properly. Our first instinct was that it was a charter boat, so X metres of water means you need to drop X metres of chain and head to the pub. Steve you are going to see a lot more bad and inexperienced anchoring in the Med. Like you say, not, so much of a problem when you have only few boats, but it becomes very frustrating in crowded anchorages, I’ve even been know to up anchor and leave rather than argue with people.

    The Beneteau's boats anchoring techniques were top-notch, the amazing thing is they clearly think they've done a good job 😂😂. They've probably gone back to speak with friends, on shore, who probably think wow they are so confident and experienced gosh I wish I was like them...... their friends will sadly never know the truth. Money in this case clearly doesn't bring with it intelligence or common sense 🙄🙄. Anchoring techniques are like RYA competent crew page 2 🤣🤣........ Maybe we need a Ladybird book (remember those) to be given free to each new owner of a posh yacht 😂😂
    Glad you're able to move within Spain now.
    Enjoy the start of you're travels.

      We have masks and wore them around people as we have been all along. The Spanish have specific rules which we abide by. Masks must be worn in shops and on public transport. Not on the beach or walking on the street. Some people (about 5%) wear masks all the time if they are particularly vulnerable. It is optional. It is not at all crowded here. I hope that remains the case in the coming weeks.

    Your eviction from the Mar Menor doesn’t surprise me. You have to remember that Spain’s governmental systems are still rooted deeply in the Fascist culture from Franco’s years. The exercise of power and authority is a goal in its own right rather than for the good of the country or its people. For example, you would be ill advised to ask a member of the Guardia civil for directions, you would be at risk of being arrested and fined for vagrancy.

    • @fernandord4083
      @fernandord4083 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      OMG I can't believe what I'm reading. The mentioned law was canceled 50 years ago (1970). We are a pleasant country and people love to help each other, and Guardia Civil will help you as much as possible, at sea and on land. During the COVID alarm, recreational boating was not allowed in our waters, that's all. Greetings from a Spanish sailor.

      @@SailingSarah.... Most countries are signitaries on the maritime 72 hour rule. If the vessel has engine problems or other major safety issues a captain can claim a 72 hour safe harbour stay. Customs and immigration are not allowed on the boat during that time.
      You are allowed off the boat to get supplies or parts to repair the boat.
      Here in Mexico... The sea of cortez... Sailboats held their ground and refused to budge. The military left them alone. Most militarys/police in the world are fairly good people..... Except for the USA. There... They would shoot you in a heartbeat.

You genuinely have a point of differentiation so don’t dilute that with silly headlines that aren’t representative of your quality content.

      Point taken, but it's not every day you get boarded by a very angry Guarda Civil officer and get told to 'leave immediately' Maybe we played down too much how aggressive these guys can be, but obviously I didn't have the footage so couldnt show it. Turns out he thought we were running an illegal charter business because we had 'sailingfairisle.com' written on the doghouse. For the first 15 minutes he was insisting I needed to go with him to see his boss who had looked at the website and surmised we were a charter business not a YT channel!
