I edc a super tool 300 ,I don’t notice the weight. It’s perfect for everything outdoors, indoors, construction, mechanical, arts and crafts, putting new batteries in my kids toys, food, and remodeling. For me it’s the perfect all around tool.
You guys make such a big deal out of a couple of ounces. I would carry a ST300 or a SURGE any day of the week over the wave or charge that are lighter weight but I have to "baby" them and make sure I don't break them during use. As to a tool kit... I think you would be hard pressed to argue that a person could not go down to the parts house and get a few tools and put them in a cash bag in the glove box for less than the $80 cost of the surge... My suggested car kit for people who don't know what to carry is simple... 1:6" channellock 2:8" channellock 3:6" crescent wrench 4:8" crescent wrench 5:4 way tire tool 6:Inexpensive costco/SAMs/husky/kobalt 1/4",3/8",1/2" socket set 7:empty 1gal gas can 8: tow rope 9:better jack 10:jumper cables All this except the gas can fit underneath the spare tire in the hollow space in our Saturn.
Go for 300 if you do not need/want outside tools. If you just required basic Phillip and flat screws 300 is the best option. Go for Surge if your job required to get bits (a lot) and looking not a basic package. Both are heavy-duty without a question. I had the 300, after 10 years under extreme pressure (General Construction) this baby got the medium and small screwdriver broke. Just purchase the Wave Plus with the bit kits and extender. It is the same as Surge just more compact. Perfect for light work/office/house. The Surge is the big brother. Not meaning is better or worst it just bigger. In my humble opinion, Wave Plus is perfect in size. Smaller, bigger, more tool, fewer tools...... the quality is amazing. It will take you a great time to destroy it. Be realistic too, you will not going to big jobs with this multi-tool, do not spec break concrete or weld pipelines. IS Multi-tool to fix small /medium jobs. That is why I think the Surge having the saw and file attachment is not great. You are losing the quick use perform, instead of that changing blades. If that is the case, use the Wave Plus. (My opinion). Note - Forget about the weight, 3-4 oz of a difference does not make an impact in your belt. EVEN is you carry the bit kits and another extension. Just get whatever you feel more comfortable and is better for your use. ALL LEATHERMAN tools are amazing !!! ALL !!!
What the hell? A tool for the car? I bring this everywhere I go! Yeah sometimes it’s a little heavy but I’ll just throw it in my edc bag! And keep real tools in my car
Lol, I got a whole tool box full of tools, this makes up my pocket/belt edc along with a permanent marker, knife, Fenix flashlight, 1/2-9/16 wrench, lighter, lock pick, AirPods, IPhone, bit kit, keys, watch, sunglasses, and my wallet.
A waste to buy such great tools and stick them into near-disuse in a car. Many people carry these on belts, hiking, etc. I often have more than just a Leatherman on my belt. Such as a litre of water. Serious long distance or high altitude hikers may have to fuss over a few grams here and there, but not any able bodied working man or soldier. Thanks for the review... always interesting!
israelpiper Is there a good multi tool that would last me through multiple deployments in the Marine Corps as a radioman, if so what are some recommendations?
I'm building a 4 x 4 zombie apoc/post EMP/invasion type war wagon with a full survival kit to be stowed in the 4 x 4 trailer to be towed behind. For this sort of kit it's not a waste to have it all stowed away, ready to rock. In fact the Surge and related kit will be some of the lightest gear in the extensive kit. But I'm thinking about replacing my Wave tools in my combat and take everywhere bug out kit (and yes I have a place to bug out to) and just using the Wave for EDC~~~~ To Takoda Enno , there is an EOD tool that leatherman makes, you might want that, and also you might look for a used Leatherman Technicians tool, I have one and wish I had 10. I used to be an electronics technician and that tiny tool is awesome
I am an over the road truck driver that pulls a flatbed, I EDC a Super Tool 300 and a Charge (original with titanium handles). I use one or the other every day.
I'm giving my Surge away to a close friend. FAR too many hot spots in the handle due to the outside tools. It also is a hand pincher. I may or may not miss the scissors but it's not a big deal. I have a Rebar and it's VERY comfortable to use. I've fondled the ST300 a few times and as far as I can tell it's also very comfortable. I'd rather have the ST300 for a tool that I may have to use for an extended period of time. In mere minutes of using the Surge it starts to dig into my hand uncomfortably. Gotta wear gloves with it but I shouldn't have to ALWAYS wear gloves to use any MT.
I'm in the plumbing service industry and I personally prefer the surge over the ST300 because of the extra bits and the replaceable saw blade and I prefer it over the wave because of the size. It is part of my EDC. As a side note the newer version has the replaceable cutters.
surge is not as robust as the 300 IMHO and the additional tools the surge has i never use. Plus i camp with mine so weight is a consideration. I just think the 300 will take more of a beating having owned both.
Piemuncher24 I believe you meant to say a reamer punch. On multi-tools a reamer punch and an awl look very similar but a awl is much more blunt than a reamer punch which tends to be a fair bit sharper. But because of the similarity in the tools people still use the two names interchangeably.
I am sure these are all mentioned. There are both hard wire cutters and stranded wire cutters. Also a wire crimped that works as well as a tool bought specifically for that use. Also there is a standard and metric ruler on the handles.
Nice review. I chose the super tool because it seems more heavy duty. I live out of my suitcase so the super tool seemed to better fit my tooling needs. The surge does seem more fancy though.
The Surge has the interchangeable bits and also have the optional bit extender and 21 more different bits which in my books puts the Surge way ahead of the 300 as far as functionality as a car tool. A metal saw and longer wood saw can also be purchased and used in place of the existing saw. The metal saw would be worth it by itself in the car situation. Hands down the Surge.
I bought a Leatherman supertool 300 and I do carry it when I am working, I just don't feel the weight of it on my belt, but carrying it might just not be for everyone. Also now the Leatherman Super 300 is around 80 bucks, you didn't really talk about the locking on the tools.
i got the super tool 300 never had any problems out of her . she saved my life as a matter of fact hiking trip gone bad and the leatherman mas all i had
I have a Juice in my truck and in my wife’s car. I also have wind proof matches with a fire starting rod, a first aid kit, some flares, a tarp, a few space blankets, and a good fixed blade knife with a 4-5 inch blade. I have a good mag lite in each of them and a small axe too. It’s not as much as I would like but its a start. I am working on it.
I’ve got the old Super Tool that I found years ago, and find it klunky to use. I’m considering upgrading as the method for unlocking tools is a little primitive. Nice review. I would pick the Surge also.
I carry the surge on my belt with custome sheth for the surge, bit kit, mini maglight, husky box cutter and the replasibal blades and a pensil. No trouble for me
I EDC both! Excellent ! A few ounces either way isn’t a problem. I do like the Surge for the clip option over pouch on belt. I never liked carrying a pouch on the belt. I guess because I rarely wear a belt. These two- Surge and 300m in my opinion ARE THE UPPER tier for Leatherman. Like your vid… nice comparison- oh….. yes I have a Surge in my truck- it never leaves. !
This has nothing to do with this review. More of a question for the masses. I know that my whole life everyone in search of scissors on these tools. But why? I have had many different brands, styles and so over the last 30 years of my life. Never have I ever used the scissors. I have carried the leatherman mini with the scissors as the main tool. For at least 10 years. I use the file on occasion. I use the small knife as a personal hygiene tool. And every so often the tweezers when I get a splinter. I want to meet the person who needs the scissors. Please explain it to me.
I have the ST 300 but looking for a Surge used; they are almost $200 in Canada. For now, I edc the Charge. Old school guys like me who grew up with the ST 200 likely don't mind the ST 300, but I think newer people would go for the Wave/Charge/Surge lineup due to the exterior tools.
I'm going with the super tool, I'm gonna get it today hopefully 50 percent off sale at my local outdoors store so if they have them in stock ill pick one up for sure, I sadly can't find my beloved and favored wingman I've spent months looking for it and have clearly put it in a compartment of a grab and go bag and forgot about putting it there or its in a pair of work pants that are thrown deep into my closet or some such .....miss it a lot
Leatherman is coming out with a 2013 surge model that has replaceable wirecutters, also the attatchment that holds the saw and file will be redone so that it can accept non-leatherman versions of the tool.
I carry my ST 300 every day to work. I do property maintenance for "low income housing" I tend to need more tools than I can carry to keep up with the tenants.
I EDC a supertool. You also forgot to say can /bottle opener/wire stripper. And the pointy thing for leather is a awl. Dont forget about the crimping tool under the pliers.
As I can use a longer t-shank saw blade on the surge instead of the one that comes with it, I can leave my laplander saw at home. Not quite as effective but close enough. The surge with its slightly more robust blades have also replaced my second backup knife when backpacking. So while the surge is heavy, it is still, with its capability to accept a longer saw blade, the lightest multi tool option for my backpacking system. Love your reviews btw.
The new surge is out now. I spoke to someone at Leatherman and was told that they don't know which retailers have them. They have to get rid of their old stock first. You have to hunt around. I'm searching for one too. Been carrying a Wave for a long time. It's never let me down, but it's time for an upgrade.
One thing that might be interesting to you is that there is a chance to also buy some metal saws in a hardware store and use them with the Surge, which is a really good reason for the Surge as well. But thank you for your video. This actually strengthened my decision for getting a Surge.
i carried the super tool while i was in afganistain and it worked great. i also carry the sugre everyday and it is great. i perfer leatherman over the gerber that the army issues.
For a Car Tool, the long drivers of the ST300 are going to beat out the outside accessible blades and scissors of the Surge. For a car tool, quick, one-handed blade deployment doesn't matter.
there are wire crimpers on the pliers bottom "crotch" area. also you didnt notice the little tabs on the small tools . easy to get out. you made it look difficult.
I like the super tool, it reminds me a lot of my first leatherman which I have 3 of and a wave and the charge 154cm and soon to be Lm 300 & Gerber center drive... One of with I already ordered... I might have a problem
I would love to see a super tool 300 with a mini screwdriver/scissors. Why Leatherman refuses to allow us to customaize it is beyond me? I think they believe they can make more money that way. I think the 300 is a stronger tool. I bought a black Surge. It arrived with play in the pliers. I sent it back to Leatherman. They did not replace even though it was new. They fixed it by pounding on the stud of the pliers, very noticeble. I could have done it myself better. Bad experience.with them.
I have one for a Supertool-300 I like it but I am really dissappoint with the wire cutting material first looks I hope that thing made by tungsten carbine steel but not just hardened steel I have to cut with three milli meter diameter of wire then it was dammage a little bit. Damn
I have to disagree with you on this comparison...The ST300 with the larger selection of USEFUL TOOLS for a CAR (eyeglass screwdriver for a car tool?) and the longer shanks on the screw drivers make it a much more practical car tool. Also, when you're working on your car, speed of use isn't really an issue so the OHO blade (while very useful in an EDC tool) and what not aren't really all that useful in this particular POU....maybe if the screw drivers were on the outside and OHO it would be good
Surge all day, I always feel like I'm going to cut myself with the rebar or super tool because the knife opens from inside. The surge you can work faster with the flick of the knife.
I use my surge for electrical work on the job sites (as i am an electrician). I carry it on my belt and the weight doesn't really bother me. I have other tools hanging off of my pants most of the time anyway. also that "leather/ sewing tool" is called a leather punch, still no idea why it has the sewing hole (think about it) and also you can use it as a fire-steel striker! :D
you can buy a removable bit driver for the supertool. and there are no outside tools because your supposed to be able to get the tools out with gloves on.
You forgot to mention one big advantage of the surge. The Leatherman surge does have a bit driver whereas the Super Tool doesn't. For about 10 bucks you can buy a 21 piece bit kit. These bits are all double sided so you buy an extra 42 tools. I have the Leatherman Surge and i really like it a lot, it is a very useful tool if you do not have regular tools.
In your opinion, do you think the removable hacksaw on the Super Tool 300 EOD will fit in the Surge where the file/saw are interchangeable? The "T-Shank" on it looks to be the size of the ones on the Surge. I know it does not have a hole drilled in it like the 2 Surge tools, but that can be done at home. What do you think/know? Thanks!
I carry my Super Tool (an original, about 20 years old) on my belt. A few ounces is really no weight at all, esp. for all the features you have at hand. I use it at least once a day.
If ten ounces is too much for your belt, you probably aren't equipped for a survival situation. You should always have at least three tools that are considerably heavier than ten or twelve ounces. Either of these Leatherman can eliminate at least one tool that's heavier.
I'm excited for those two changes! However, it sounds like they've removed the eyeglass slot. That tool is actually pretty useful for me and no other multitool has precise screwdrivers.
You might want to look at the Gerber Legend 800 and see if those work for you, too. Their replaceable wire cutters are better, in my opinion, than the replaceable wire cutters. And you can swap the cutter with all kinds of different saber saw blades for all kinds of cutting needs,
Hello , i recently bought my first leatherman , and i would really like a tutorial for how to clean and maintain the tool , could you please make a tutorial like that ?
I'm in VN and the LM retailer here just got the new surge 2013. The S2013 is about 35$ > ST300.. I've the Charge TTi for edc in my bag. Now I'm in between the new S2013 and the ST300 for heavy duty all around housework. Can you give me some advice since I like the look (design) of the ST300 and the blade-saw lenght / weight / price is also better than the surge 2013. But the S2013 has the perfect tool layout now although I don't use small/large bit driver for heavy duty. Thanks!
so which one do prefer better cause your vedio maight be my guide to purchase one of the couple, i need 2 make a choice bettwen then , like the phillip bit driver but i am afraid of hardlessness of the main blade , thus Surge is better for me ?
If Leatherman would use replaceable wirecutters as a standard on just about all their medium to heavy duty multitools then I might have chosen a different multitool than my Supertool 300. I'm still happy with my Supertool though I wish the Rebar came out earlier.
Ha interesting, prior to finding this video I was trying to decide between the 300 and the surge as a better car tool. Nice coincidence with this video!! My car multi-tool presently is a SOG Powerlock. I feel the SOG is actually more powerful than either of these two tools. But ease of access on the SOG is well beyond a nightmare. For that reason I will be replacing my SOG with a surge. And surge over 300 due to outside accessible tools. Speed is vital in emergencies. Great video!!
A car tool? Really? Most guys will have one tool box in their cars. I have a small one that is completely capable of simple preventive maintenance to top engine overhaul.
I do not agree, I would rather have the Super Tool as the tool to have in your car since it's more of a on the job site kind of tool. The Surge is too nice to just let it sit in your glove box, and is more useful as an EDC type of tool. They both are great tools to have, but it all comes down to the persons choice. I don't care about how heavy the Surge is, I would rather carry that on me since it is so useful, but that's just me!!
My 300 is my everyday carry at work......why does weight always have to be an issue for some people And i take my Leatherman in every 6 months for a free replacement
my leatherman surge. was with me throughout my deployment in IRAQ and i had over 100lbs of gear on and it was freaking hot. and here you are acting like 12 oz's a big deal
I am in complete disagreement of your use of these tools. You don’t spend 60-100 dollars just to stick the thing in a car and let it rust, I carry my ST300 on my belt everyday, everywhere I go. It’s among the best maintenance tools you can own, weather it be using the pliers to bend something back into shape or pulling a broken anchor out of a wall, to sawing and cutting through anything that needs be cut or sawed. The screwdrivers come in handy, although the flathead broke while I was prying something out of a wall in a house I painted, I still find the ST300 to be the most reliable tool I’ve ever owned.
Am i the only one who dislikes the cutting style of the leatherman pliers? The "hard" wire cutter never fully cuts through copper and the "soft" wire cutter simply does not cut. It's 2 blocks sliding along each other. They should have opted for a normal diagonal cutter i think..
Not sure but neither cutters are working as good as a 20 euro knipex side cutter. So i have high standards or something is wrong. But they seem alligned good.
+Liam Green exactly, its more like 2 blocks sliding across each other, that isn't cutting but crushing. 2 knife style cutters would do the job. sharpening is going to be tough though. guess ill stick to my knipex for electrical work and my leatherman for leatherman work
I know this is years ago...but which is stronger/more durable? Is the stamped/press fit construction of the Super Tool 300 stronger or a liability if it starts to loosen? I own an old charge ti and find it annoying to close versus the super tool 300, does the surge have this issue? Also...I’m so annoyed that they didn’t give it the charge treatment of a premium blade steel like cpm154 or s30v as the various iterations of the charge did.
the tools like the charge, surge and wingman need to come with replaceable wire cutters. I couldn't care LESS if its expensive....I'd love to see a tool with outside accessible 154CM plain and serrated blades, scissors, awl, file, saw AND replaceable cutters. I'd break the big bucks for that.
My suggested car kit for people who don't know what to carry is simple...
1:6" channellock
2:8" channellock
3:6" crescent wrench
4:8" crescent wrench
5:4 way tire tool
6:Inexpensive costco/SAMs/husky/kobalt 1/4",3/8",1/2" socket set
7:empty 1gal gas can
8: tow rope
9:better jack
10:jumper cables
All this except the gas can fit underneath the spare tire in the hollow space in our Saturn.

i guess it's quite off topic but does anybody know a good place to watch new series online?
@Uriel Drake I watch on flixzone. Just google for it =)
@Kaden Hunter Yup, been using flixzone for since april myself :D
@Kaden Hunter Thank you, I signed up and it seems like a nice service =) Appreciate it!!
i edc a surge and i have no problem with the weight. maybe i should make a review on mine......
Do it
hyper drive I'd watch it.
Conner Wright I already bought a surge and I love it
Same here!
This guy sounds like a desk jockey.

I feel like a small toolbox with ratchets and screwdrivers is better suited for a car. Multitools are meant to be carried.
israelpiper Is there a good multi tool that would last me through multiple deployments in the Marine Corps as a radioman, if so what are some recommendations?
Takoda Enno the surge is one of the most versatile and robust tools Leatherman makes.
I'm building a 4 x 4 zombie apoc/post EMP/invasion type war wagon with a full survival kit to be stowed in the 4 x 4 trailer to be towed behind. @@B_L_Smith They replaced the eyeglass screwdriver on the surge with an additional flathead years ago, this video is really no longer relevent.
that tool you like to call a little drilling leather punch thingy is called an AWL!!!
I thought it was called a remmer punch
Piemuncher24
I believe you meant to say a reamer punch. On multi-tools a reamer punch and an awl look very similar but a awl is much more blunt than a reamer punch which tends to be a fair bit sharper. But because of the similarity in the tools people still use the two names interchangeably.

it's prabaly already said, but the Surge has replaceable wire cutters now...
probably (damn typos)...

Dave Rosa i agree
Leatherman bits are soft
I edc my Leatherman surge with everything, the 42 bits, bit driver and extra file or saw blade and sometimes edc a buck knife or a gerber.

So while the surge is heavy, it is still, with its capability to accept a longer saw blade, the lightest multi tool option for my backpacking system. Love your reviews btw.
I want one because it would allow me to carry the wood saw and multiple metal saws.
The new surge is out now. I spoke to someone at Leatherman and was told
that they don't know which retailers have them. They have to get rid of their
old stock first. You have to hunt around. I'm searching for one too. Been carrying
a Wave for a long time. It's never let me down, but it's time for an upgrade.
I ordered a leatherman surge last night and can't wait till it comes!
Man I'm glad you're not in Afghanistan now! What an embarrassing mess..
For a Car Tool, the long drivers of the ST300 are going to beat out the outside accessible blades and scissors of the Surge. For a car tool, quick, one-handed blade deployment doesn't matter.
I just got the Leatherman Surge the other day and I love it!
there are wire crimpers on the pliers bottom "crotch" area. also you didnt notice the little tabs on the small tools . easy to get out. you made it look difficult.
I just ordered a new Surge and they come with interchangable wire cutter blades too now. 2020. It will be my edc n my swiss army ranger sport.
Also, when you're working on your car, speed of use isn't really an issue so the OHO blade (while very useful in an EDC tool) and what not aren't really all that useful in this particular POU....maybe if the screw drivers were on the outside and OHO it would be good
Your reviews are very detailed and precise. I thank you for saving me money.
Surge all day, I always feel like I'm going to cut myself with the rebar or super tool because the knife opens from inside. The surge you can work faster with the flick of the knife.
I wear a separate knife on me so I usually don’t worry about that on my st300
I use my surge for electrical work on the job sites (as i am an electrician). I carry it on my belt and the weight doesn't really bother me. I have other tools hanging off of my pants most of the time anyway. also that "leather/ sewing tool" is called a leather punch, still no idea why it has the sewing hole (think about it) and also you can use it as a fire-steel striker! :D
you can buy a removable bit driver for the supertool. and there are no outside tools because your supposed to be able to get the tools out with gloves on.
The knifes/bladed on my new knife which is about a few days old, they are a little hard to open, does that get easier over time? Thanks :D
I like the surge more. I keep it my pocket and it doesn't bother me but I could definitely see why people would complain about its weight
Thanks!
these would also be ggod for motorcycles where you would have the ability to have a bigger tool, but not an actual setr
You should do a updated version with the new surge
+Thomas Davie I agree, the new surge has the beefier pliers and replaceable wirecutters
+A. Wheeler just bought a wave!
+Thomas Davie I just bought a surge but I engraved it so I gotta wait on leatherman to ship it
Fu_ Here in Israel the Wave dominates both soldiers and tool using workers. You are in unity with the Jewish nation! Wave all the way!
My leatherman ST 300 works best for me.
I'm excited for those two changes! However, it sounds like they've removed the eyeglass slot. That tool is actually pretty useful for me and no other multitool has precise screwdrivers.
Now that the Surge has the replaceable wire cutters I want the Wave with the same :)
You might want to look at the Gerber Legend 800 and see if those work for you, too. Their replaceable wire cutters are better, in my opinion, than the replaceable wire cutters. And you can swap the cutter with all kinds of different saber saw blades for all kinds of cutting needs,
Good vid as usual buddy....excellent production quality...
Thanks!
i keep my super surge in the glove box of my car, i took the pliers out of the supertool 300 and put it into a surge, great tool
so which one do prefer better cause your vedio maight be my guide to purchase one of the couple, i need 2 make a choice bettwen then , like the phillip bit driver but i am afraid of hardlessness of the main blade , thus Surge is better for me ?
My Surge is always on my belt lol. But my surge has the 300 pliers, guess they changed it
And they are all liner locks for the knives?
If Leatherman would use replaceable wirecutters as a standard on just about all their medium to heavy duty multitools then I might have chosen a different multitool than my Supertool 300. I'm still happy with my Supertool though I wish the Rebar came out earlier.
Great vid
I will someday have a Leatherman Surge.
- also for pros & cons: you can not disassemble the Wave like the Surge.
is the leatherman super tool 300 classed as a locking knife?
hi im am in a vocational school and i am going to become a electrician and probably use the wire splinter put which one should i get
I have had a Gerber fail on me. The pliers failed horribly.
What do you think about the charge tti.
A car tool?
I don't care about how heavy the Surge is, I would rather carry that on me since it is so useful, but that's just me!!
i think in terms of hiking the leatherman wave is better. just an opinion
Thanks!
Great review, thank you!
LM OHT still the best within reach car tool - Strap Cutter
Best "toolbox" car tool the LM crunch!
I EDC my Surge with a pocket clip and I made a video
Leatherman charge tti is the best multi tool there is.
Good review, thanks.
My 300 is my everyday carry at work......why does weight always have to be an issue for some people
And i take my Leatherman in every 6 months for a free replacement
so weird that someone considers 12 ounces heavy, i don't even notice the weight on my belt..
Guns. Knives. Campfires. Now you’re speaking my language!!
Don't forget you can buy bits for the Surge
my leatherman surge. was with me throughout my deployment in IRAQ and i had over 100lbs of gear on and it was freaking hot. and here you are acting like 12 oz's a big deal
Man you got a fake surge my surge has a replaceable cutters and instead of glasses flat screwdrive I have a bigger flat screwdriver
+FoodOnCrack Really? That's interesting. I haven't had that problem at all. Are you sure your cutter is aligned properly?
Not sure but neither cutters are working as good as a 20 euro knipex side cutter. So i have high standards or something is wrong. But they seem alligned good.
I understand your problem, if you have the removable wire cutters you could try to grind them to a diagonal chisel type grind, hope this helps
Yes.
"Then we've got that same sort of drilling thing with the eye" facepalm.
Thanks for the comparison.
the tools like the charge, surge and wingman need to come with replaceable wire cutters. I couldn't care LESS if its expensive....I'd love to see a tool with outside accessible 154CM plain and serrated blades, scissors, awl, file, saw AND replaceable cutters. I'd break the big bucks for that.
The 2014 Surge does come with replaceable cutters
Carry the surge on my belt everyday do not notice the weight.
What do you mean "car tool"? I dare not go anywhere without my Leatherman ST300.
