    Excellent video. You and I have the only 350 videos on TH-cam but yours came out alot nicer than mine. I had to use a cell phone and I had practicality no editing tools. It's too bad they couldn't give you the higher compression pistons, apparently they're hard to come by. Also I love the paint scheme, cast water pump, black bolts, black balancer etc. The 161 stamped into the back of the block translates to June 10th as it's the 161th day of the year.

    Did you do a factory stock rebuild on this motor or performance build ?
    There are a lot of tricks that you can do on those motor's to make a lot of horse power your cam bearings were they oil restriction bearings or did you put oil restriction into place the ones that go into the block ? Olds motors need to keep the oil in the bottom end ...
    As well anouter trick for 7 horse power is the exhaust sides of the heads the center ports are close together with that little indent between them if you fill that indent in and totally separate the two ports that is 7 horse power ... There is another way to make more horsepower on the other side exhaust at the intake side but requires a bit of work as well ...
    Good luck with your project 👍

    looks like stock heads with stock components - springs, rocker arms, probably push rods. The Thumper Cam with that lift and duration should have a double spring set up that Comp Cam recommends and sells as a kit. Rev that engine to 6K maybe a hand full of times, might be lucky before bending push rods floating valves or ingest a valve into the bore.
    With all due respect, not to insult you but your video title is misleading - what you did was a re-ring not a rebuild.
    I didn't notice maybe I missed it, if you replaced the oil pump while you had the motor torn down at the very least polished the crank and installed new main bearings.
    Rebuilds always involve machining the block and heads, and magnafluxing to check for cracks.
    I wish you good luck with your car projects and good health, young man.
    ps.... Most local auto parts stores that rent tools also have the cam bearing installation tool available for less that $10 per day.

  • @stevehovey70
    @stevehovey70 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think you needed an align bore on the main bearing caps. That plasti gauge should have spread evenly across it. You had large sections of it in the center of the bearing that did not crush at all. This indicates out of round caps.

    Hey, 2 questions: trying to start the car up but having a difficult time getting the timing right. Any tips on how to set it up properly? Also, not sure if you can send me in the direction of a correct firing order diagram. My other question is how to you adjust the power steering pump to get the belt on? Thank you!

    • @ChadWilliamsFixesAll
      @ChadWilliamsFixesAll  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey there!! For the timing, you will want to buy a timing light and timing tape. I bought my light from Harbor Freight and my tape from a local speed shop. You will want to point number 1 sparkplug wire on the distributor towards the number one cylinder. Also, make sure the engine is at top dead center and on the compression stroke (not 180 out). If all that is good, you should have your timing on zero. Since the Olds distributer spins counter clockwise, you will want to turn your distributer clockwise to advance the time (I believe). You should be able just Google for the firing order, that is what I did. For the power steering pump, there is a bolt that sits between the pump and the pulley. Loosening and tightening that bolt is what allows you to adjust the pump for the belt. Hope this helps!

      Chad Williams it’s hard to say really. Back in the day 25+ years ago I knew a mechanic who came to your house and rebuilt a oil burner for about 1,400 bucks and it would run good for 60-80 thousand miles then after that 20 thousand per rebuild. He is retired now . I suppose a shop would charge a lot more especially if mech. Work was required. That cost 12-15 hundred alone 25 years ago.

      No a sub 350 chevy will I believe trans bolts are different there is an easy way to addapt though I think 2 holes don't line up a rocket uses the big block olds tranny they are not the same block as a 350 chevy it's the same block as a 403

    • @SammyVista1972
      @SammyVista1972 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      7, 7a, 6, 5 heads from a 1972 or earlier will bump up your compression ratio a bit because from 1973 and up Oldsmobile went to a higher CC volume in cylinder heads to lower compression ratios.

    • @thomasmcmillan3700
      @thomasmcmillan3700 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Looks like he had two different heads in the video. One was a 7 A and the other was a 6. Something isn't going to run right. The number 8 heads can give you good power, but the best heads are the 5, 6, 7 and 7 A. They are 64CC heads. I would just have them cut for bigger valves.

    • @CB-wv3zy
      @CB-wv3zy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      looks like stock heads with stock components - springs, rocker arms, probably push rods.

    Can you please help?! I have an olds 350 casting # 557752-3b, it was a swap from a stock 307 from my 1983 olds 98, and everything was switched over, the mechanic told me to order parts as if it is a 1983 307 (intake manifold & carb are from the 307). Problem i'm having is that the starter does not seem to want to start the engine. I'll get one good start then it'll struggle and chug. New battery, altenator, battery wires and all. Which starter would you suggest for this engine? any help is greatly apprecaite! Thanks so much!

    • @ChadWilliamsFixesAll
      @ChadWilliamsFixesAll  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Secret Santa, I bought a normal starter from Advance Auto, I think their Carquest model since they have merged. Mine engages and starts everytime. Was the starter shimmed correctly? I would also double check your voltage at the starter to make sure you are seeing the correct voltage, that you see from the battery.

    • @ThinkFreely2012
      @ThinkFreely2012 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would also make sure the starter heat shield is installed. These motors were terrible about heat soak in the starters. After the engine gets hot and then you park all that manifold heat gets in the starter and then it's difficult to crank.

      What I've done in the past if the engine is in the car, is use a breaker bar against the frame rail and then bump the starter.
      Or if it's out of the car, put a block of wood between the crankshaft and the block to keep the crank from turning.

    What vehicle year and model/trim do you use to find your parts? I recently acquired a 1980 Chevy C10 that has 350 rocket engine and I'm having issues finding parts for it since I'm not too familiar with what vehicles that engine originally came with

    • @glennmanchester5696
      @glennmanchester5696 ปีที่แล้ว

      That engine cams in a lot of vehicles from 1968 to the 1980 s I think but run the numbers off the block to find out what year the engine was made and that will help considerably but they didn't change a whole lot but it depends on what parts your looking for exactly internal or external external it shouldn't be that hard just match up your old part w the new one to make sure its right
