- This week we visit the Las Vegas area. Boondocking at Lake Mead....amazing! Lake Mead is HUGE!! A true desert oasis! Fishing, boating, kayaking, swimming, wildlife photography and a WIDE range of dispersed camping. If you visit lake mead, be sure to check out the hoover dam just a few miles away. If you are more adventurous and up for a 6 mile (round trip) hike....be sure to check out Arizona Hotsprings. The landscape is out of this world.

Once again, and awe inspiring video. The coyotes are very bold, but they're that way here in Maine too. Roodle and Beans were such good boys and had as much fun as their human parents. Keep up the great work and I guess I have to gas up the campah van and track you kids down. If not for the courage of the tiny crew the kayak would be lost. Great job paddling Carrie.

That was a bigger hike than anticipated. Be careful with both coyotes, and this is also rattlesnake country. Watch hand and foot placement when hiking, and probably good to keep Roodle leashed! Fun watching him play with his buddy!

We kayaked that stretch of the Colorado River from the base of Hoover Dam to Willow Beach...around a 12 mile paddle so we camped out one night along the river. Gorgeous scenery and am planning to do it again soon, hopefully with a visit to the hot spring. Thanks for another great video!
That sounds like a good time! It must have been beautiful, Carrie would love to do a kayak trip like that. There was a nice camping area(river bar) right below the hot spring.
Very good job you two excellent filming I haven't been to the hot springs and Ladder since 75 and 83 I was there it's funny because my box is sitting down just across from where you guys hang out by the water and I see you guys come & Go but I just I want to thank you for all your hard work and putting this out there great job

I've visited the Vegas area to tour Hoover Dam and enjoy Lake Mead over the past 25 years but didn't know about hot springs till now. Hope you made time to hike Valley of Fire area too.

We hiked back the next day and sadly my hat was gone, however it did allow for additional drone footage 😀 Roodle and Matts dog Beans got along so well! Listened to the coyotes at night when we stayed at Homolovi, AZ State Park in the van last October. (We have coyotes here where we live too though.)
Cool hot springs.
We do great with the sound of coyotes but for some reason the howl of a wolf makes the hair on my arm stand up 😆 That was a really pleasant hot springs and such a rough and rugged area. Must have been something for the first people to discover them.
Wow, that trail and the drone shots, EPIC! Great job. Also loved the kayak adventure. Made me miss summer so much! I am only .5 miles away from Lake Michigan but the water is frigid lol. wonderful story telling!

Yes, it freezes over some years. This year has been mild so it will not this year. It's gorgeous to look at but yes, very cold! It will be July till it is comfortable for swimming. Xo
Pretty sure that was about the month I swam in Lake Michigan last year. It was pretty cool but warmer than Lake Superior. I would love to see it ice over. Take care. 😀
@@oneadVANtureatatime A few years ago along the shore the water under the ice created gigantic slabs of ice into mountains. There were big caves etc. It was a big thing. Thousands of people went to see them and to climb on the ice slabs. Yeah, superior (my favorite) is tolerable in August. Lol
There's sixteen reactors in Utah and they supply lake Mead lake Powell and salt lake with fresh water!!!

Wow those coyotes were really tuned up. Roodle was letting that one he was getting too close. Roodle and beans were too cute. The hot springs were epic.HAPPY TRAILS
We love the sound of coyotes and usually, Roodle pays no attention. But like you said that one got too close 😀 We are heading your direction in a couple of weeks and would love to stop by for a visit if the timing works out. Take care and happy trails.

Question for the Q&A for drone shots like the one you got of the trail to the hot spring... Do you carry your drone with you on hikes or just fly back over it from the van? I totally approve of the amount of Roodle in this weeks episode!
We pretty much pack the drone with us everywhere. There has to be a straight line of sight to it or it will start losing connection. However in perfect conditions I have flown it 3.2 miles away from me. We are working on a short Wednesday video on my drone right now.
Roodle really loves to hike and show off his climbing skills 😀

We hiked back the next day to find it gone. Turned out to be a good excuse to get more drone footage and exercise 😀 Pretty cool to follow a slot canyon to a hot spring.

I loved your video! Very cool shots with the drone. I live just around the corner from Lake Mead so I definitely need to take advantage of it more. Did you see any areas that might be good for a tent by the lake? Were the roads good for a small suv? I have a CX-5. Thanks for any advice and thanks again for that awesome video!
Government was and boxcar are both good for tents. Boxcar is a little more remote and some loose gravel and sand to watch for but we did ok with the van. Some places close to the water you might have to look around a bit for a level spot but they are there. Thank you for the kind words. I live about an Hr. SOuth of the ARIZONA hot springs in Kingman Arizona. Those springs were delightful in the 70's and 80's before people from Las Vegas Discovered them. The river in that area still has Ring Bolts in the walls used by steamboats in the 1800'd to get up the river. DO NOT Put you head under water in the hotsprings--there have been cases of brain eating amoeba that enters through your nose in the water. Kinda hard to imagine, but the Volcanic heating that makes the hot springs is remnant from volcanic activity in this area 18,000,000 years ago...
We almost moved to Kingman about 8 years ago! I still like that area. Thanks for the information about the hot springs! It's crazy to think about steamboats making it all the way there. I would love to do a boat trip up the river someday. 😎

I'm not sure what a Kigali is? I guessing you typed kayak and it auto corrected? We have one daylife kayak that we got at walmart. It is super cheap and was on sale. $100. It is nothing special....sit on top but I am happy to have it to get back on the water. It floats nicely and is super stable. What we like about it is that is is only 40 pounds so pretty easy to get on and off the roof. The price was right! We also like the length (8ft).....it fit perfectly on our roof deck.
What I dont like about it is the 250 pound weight limit.... It works fantastic for me but roodle (dog) gets very upset what I dont take him. I have had this kayak for almost a year and one of the seat support plastic rings broke. Im thinking I will be able to replace this easy......overall I am very happy.

To clarify the hike in is over 3 miles each way or is that round trip? You said you could hike in from the top or bottom is one trail longer than the other? Thank you? You're spot on Lake Mead was perfect!
I believe it was 6 miles round trip. I recall there were two ways but we only went this one way. To be honest the trail is not marked very well….. we were happy to be with Matt who knew where to go!

The turquoise color of the lake, is that caused by the minerals in the rocks? So beautiful. Thank you.
Yes! The depth of the lake, clear water, sunny clear skies, and dissolved minerals give Lake Mead that rich turquoise color. The color changed some on the windy days when waves crashing on the shoreline made the water not so clear.

I was thinking about going for a swim until I put my hand in the water. It was freezing cold! ❄️ Having said that if I was overdue on a shower I might have just made the plunge. 😀

Carrie- how do you video when your in the kayak? I’m assuming your using a GoPro? Do you strap it to your chest/ head?
You nailed it. Carrie mounts the GoPro to her linebacker. It keeps fairly steady for the most part.

Any chance you could mountain bike to the hot springs?
+Kenny Foust only if you are a badass mountain 🚴🏾♀️. Once you get past the steep decline you run into sand in the slot canyons. You are pretty close to the hotsprings when you hit the rock obstacles so you could leave your bike there.
Would you share the coordinates of the Lake Mead camping spot please?

Did you stay at the Kingman wash area? If not, can you give directions or gps coordinates? I’m doing a road trip to Las Vegas this spring and would like to spend a night where you did.
+Mark Austin We were camping at Lake Mead so it was a short drive for us. We did see Kingman wash but not sure if you can camp there. You can leave your car in the parking lot if you are planning to hike to the hotsprings and stay the night.
Other option:
Hoover Dam Lodge (casino) is 5 ish miles away. You can stay overnight in their parking lot( we did this as well)
+Mark Austin here are the Coordinates for Arizona hotsprings N 35.98031, W 114.69809. According to IOverlander you can drive through the parking lot and take a road (we did see this road) to a flat Boondocking spot. Hope this helps
one adVANture at a time I won’t be doing the hot springs hike as I will be going in May. It’s the exact location of your boondocking site on Lake Mead I’m looking for. It looked like a nice place to relax for a night.
+Mark Austin yeah it will be much warmer. Here are the coordinates for Lake Mead. If you use IOverlander it’s labeled Government Wash. N 36.12342, W 114.83082. There are literally hundreds of options. We drove down what looked like a main road where people are launching boats. I suggest you drive around a bit to look around. We saw some very nice areas when we were walking around

The coyotes we're very brief each night and usually only last a couple of minutes. We love the sound of them but wolves howling is a whole another story. I use to kayak for the main purpose of fishing but have yet to try Carrie’s kayak. Take care and happy travels.
Pretty sure drones are not allowed in any National Park?
This is true for most national parks. Lake Mead allows you to fly over Lake Mead National Recreation area with your drone but you can not take off or land inside the boundaries. There is a location near The Lake Mead RV Village where they let you take off and land your drone, which is inside the park. Which is all a bit confusing but is the information we could find for this area. Definitely check out the regulations if you plan on flying here. Thank you for your comment. Take care and stay safe.
How long and how Loud were the Coyotes?
They only lasted a few minutes but were right near us so they sounded pretty darn loud lol

+The fish On Guys we boondocked at Government Wash.... tons of camping spots, some closer to the water and suitable for any rig.
Boxcar wash is another option just a few miles past Government wash... the road if much softer( more sand) and washboard in places but we made it okay, harder to get to the water. Best to have 4x4 or traction devices if you choose boxcar wash. Worth a drive out to checkout

Roodle likes small dogs but Beans was an instant life long friend for him. They got along so well, we had to go back for my hat and the entire time Roodle was looking for Beans. We love the sound of coyotes but those got a little close during the day. Take care and have a good night.
