I think it's strange how little footage there is. Though I just started looking into it. What would be useful, is for you to explain the difference between Mw scale and Richter scale. In the Richter scale a 7.0 earthquake would be terrifying. But in the Mw scale a 7.0 is mild.
Like a bomb how "close" a city is to the epicenter absolutely matters, people tend to focus only on the magnitude. This was a long way off the coast, only a Tsunami was a concern not the low ground acceleration due to the distance.
It's related to ground-deep I think, if the quake was in a more deep ground origin, the intense movement is less, a 4.0 with only 1km of depth can even cause buildings collapse or severely damaged.
Also they are unpredictable....since we really are in the dark as to how many factors there are that can affect how bad the results are. I grew up in soCal and we had several even in San Diego that were far away from the epicenter from the desert....I'm talking several hours away and we got ones bad enough that people were evacuating because of lasting shaking etc not because of any warning. Also aftershocks that were worse than the vids I've seen of this one so far. What is worrisome and strange to me is that there have been records of several happening in sequence so it could still be a warning. No reason to stop living because of it...but also I don't think people should feel "in the clear" as if it's not going to happen again for a long time. There's no guarantee. We legit only have theoretical science for that it's not exact.
That's one of MANY factors. Yes. If the epicenter was oceanic that obviously changes things. But the fault lines can vary in depth, width, and the sediment around them as well....the recent weather patterns can change the soil in places that can trigger more mechanical erosion etc. Even human caused factors and the types of infrastructure around can lend to the effects of the quake. People really underestimate how much goes into it and that's why it's not an exact science and will likely never be...just like most science. Though this is less so than many specialties. Mathematics are far more specific and only part of this science is based on specific equations. You have to also know every possible factor you're dealing with to get the most accurate estimation possible. People have a hard time doing that since we are imperfect in an imperfect world....not to mention how much more lazy people have become as the average IQ drops simultaneously. Just saying.
You can't really compare the Loma Prieta earthquake to the one up north, because MOST of San Francisco, even up to the Marina area, is built on landfill, NOT bedrock, which is about 250' below the ground surface. Landfill is shaky, unlike something built where they have drilled down to implant beams into the bedrock, which is stable. Even the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco shook foundations of houses and ruptured water lines, so that firemen didn't have water to fight fires that broke out from gas lines being broken. Certainly, construction has improved there since 1906, but much of San Francisco is still on landfill! I moved from the Bay Area 26 years ago, but the residence tower in San Francisco, called the Millennial Tower, is NOT fully in bedrock or it wouldn't have leaned like it has, noticed by those in the penthouse there, where it has leaned to such a degree that they an watch marbles roll across the floor in one direction! Planet Earth is a VERY active planet, her tectonic plates DO move and are unstable at times, pushing against each other or pushing up on one plate over the other so that the earth is bound to move!
