- That the show’s original creator, Frank Darabont, wanted another actor to play Rick Grimes? Rick Grimes is arguably the most famous of all of The Walking Dead’s protagonists and returned in Season 11 to much fanfare. Grimes is played in the show by British actor Andrew Lincoln, and it’s hard to imagine anyone else stepping into the role. However, before leaving the show in Season Two, The Walking Dead’s original creator, Frank Darabont, wanted another actor to play Grimes before casting Lincoln in the role. That actor was none other than the Punisher himself - Thomas Jane. Jane and Darabont had worked together for the movie adaptation of Stephen King’s The Mist, and the actor was the first choice for the role of Grimes but eventually passed on the role to star in another show for HBO called Hung. This opened the door for Andrew Lincoln, who soon after was cast as Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead.

Andrew Lincoln is simply a better actor than Thomas Jane. Imagine the emotional scenes, where Rick Grimes breaks down and is exasperated. I can't see Thomas Jane being able to pull those key scenes to the same degree as Lincoln did.

Andrew Lincoln is by far one of the greatest actors ever. His ability to portray body language in ways that are relevant towards the scenes he’s in are out of this world. When Lori passed his first initial breakdown haunted me, that’s how realistic it was. When he was almost forced to sever Carl’s arm of his acting was bloody brilliant. I am so glad we got Andrew.
Woah calm down there sport, maybe in the top 150, but definitely not one of the greatest of all time lol. That's ridiculous. He hasn't even really been in anything because TWD. To be a great actor, you have to show that you're capable of playing different roles/characters and being dynamic. All we've seen him play is the deadly serious semi-British sheriff fighting zombies and yelling a lot.

@@randymarshislorde He didn’t do it till 2017. So like six years prior to it. But we still would have had two punishers if Thomas Jane was Rick, rather than Andrew Lincoln. Would have been funny if he said, Rick Grimes is dead… Call me The Punisher after he blew up the bridge. But I am sure not everyone would have found it as fun.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who noticed how he kept repeating himself.
Andrew Lincoln did Rick Grimes beautifully too. Every episode up until his character death was this surreal, almost real thing. From his scenes in Alexandria to the terminal attempted killing to Negans’ killing scene (which are some of my favorite scenes of Grimes) where at Alexandria you see this battered, angry Grimes not only protecting this women but passing his beliefs and trying to warn and protect the people there the only way he knows how- in terminal, even when he was tied up on his knees he still broke free in the most badass freaky way and there you could see the character break from sanity and it was beautifully cut and acted. ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS GOING ON IN THAT SCENE!!! (Yes, the actors were not informed of anything before filming so all reactions were real and beautiful!!) Then in Negans’ introduction where our favorite actors passed (☹️) you see this completely defeated character who still has the power to stand up and keep moving forward even when it’s become a direct order. I literally cannot imagine anyone one else to play this iconic character, change my mind.
Yes, exactly it was these moments that struck my family and I. It was so true to life. One minute he was on top and then next Rick bottom where there’s no where else to go but up and that’s the most admirable. It made him humble and a better leader- strong and brave in a different way.

Rick is by far the best character of the entire show imo. He was the walking dead. The show has had a huge hole in it ever since his departure.
SO excited for the Rick & Michonne series coming out next year. Cannot wait.

I’m so glad Andrew got it.
I think it’s really cool how they got actors who not only played the personality of the comic book characters, but even went so far as to find the personality and the looks.
And yeah, the other actor def looks like comic book Grimes.
But Andrew just freaking nails it with TV show Grimes, and I’m glad because as other fans have said, AMC has their own twist to it.

Frank wanted the entire cast of the Mist to be the cast of TWD.
I’m glad fate chose Lincoln, what’s even better is when he came back in Season 11 as a cameo, the walker he kills wasn’t scripted. Andy said that he asked to have Rick kill that walker cause it would be wrong to have Rick come back and NOT kill something.
Andrew Lincoln not only suited the role WAY too well, just as Johnny Depp was suited for Captain Jack Sparrow and Antony Starr for Homelander, but Andy also came back and was already doing the most Rick Grimes thing ever like he wasn’t just gone for a whole 2 and a half seasons, or what, 3 years?
I sure am glad he took that other role and Andrew Lincoln showed up. After a few episodes I’m sure the creators were happy Andrew was Rick grimes.

One of the actors who auditioned for Rick actually did get a role on the show in the Season 6 premiere as the character Carter.
But this show had a lot of good picks for the comic characters, wouldn’t change them for anything

Honestly, that would’ve been a good choice. Thomas Jane is a good underrated actor. He would’ve looked closer to comic Rick as well too.

It's hard picturing TWD with a different actor. Andrew is really amazing and has so much potential. Same for a lot of other actors in TWD but they only get known for a one hit wonder. I guarantee Andrew and a large sum of them are known only for TWD and MAYBE 1 or 2 other decent movies. It's disappointing bc they aren't bad in any way. They are good people as well as really great actors. I know the actor who plays Gabriel and the actor who played Dr Edwin Jenner are both co stars in a Si Fi movie called Starship Troopers. And if that's crazy enough the movie The Mist and Thomas Jane worked with Melissa McBride who had a short role as a survivor and Andrea (I forgot the actresses name). Eventually Andrea worked with the comedy Dumb and Dumber 2 after TWD. And we all know Jon, Norman, Micheal Rooker and a very few others have a great movie career that obviously got them all parts. I mean Micheal Rooker was working with Tom Cruise in Days of Thunder and a lot of other movies, Jon Bernthal was in Wolf of Wall street, Grudge Match and a lot of other big movies, Norman Reedus was in Blade 2, 3 Ways to Sunday (I think it was) and a few other movies.
I think Thomas Jane would have also done a satisfactory job in the role, but Andrew Lincoln gave us pure gold

That's because, there were three or four other characters in The Mist, who became and played some major characters in TWD. Mcbride is awesome. No doubt he wanted him to play Rick Grimes. They both are great no comparison, I'm glad that Andrew Lincoln played it and made it so great with his performance. 🕉

Lincoln is a hell of an actor though, glad they went with him. He had quite a few scenes that stuck out to me that had me like damn he can act.

- the wide eyed rant he went on in Alexandria after fighting with the abusive husband. Then Michonne hit him in the back of the head.
-Him crying and pleading with Negan not to make him cut Carl's arm off.

I agree andrew was born to play rick but the second best I agree would be Thomas Jane for sure that would be an interesting dynamic punisher vs punisher although had it been thomas he might have also gotten the role for the tv series punisher again too I personally like having different adaptations of the punisher along with different actors portraying frank castle I like 2004 how he's a navy seal & warzone where he's a marine even the 80's version was cool I'm my head I kinda like to envision the punisher as sort of an entity for punishment a spirit that inhabits different people from time to time with different skull logos with different tactics & weapons with different training & backgrounds family members also history & different ways in which the tragedy goes down for all the versions of the punisher kind of like with all 3 spiderman but instead of them being in different alternate universes like Spider-man because he's so much larger than life punisher is toned down enough that he's fairly realistic so I see no reason why all the different versions of the punisher couldn't exist in one universe and world I'm glad Andrew Lincoln is Rick Grimes but I could have totally seen Thomas Jane in that role also as much as I love the mist & find it funny just how many of TWD actors play in that film the character that Jane played after seeing him in the punisher felt like he was kinda a pussy now for an everyday man he was fine his reactions understandable but I'll never be able to get his punisher persona out of my head now Jane was by far bot the toughest biggest strongest or most brutal savage version of the punisher that's a close tie between warzone & Jones bernthal jane was more tactical smart cold calculated, warzone was more brutal brute force overly armored excessively armed to the teeth was no nonsense took no prisoners probably the best most effective punisher but bernthal was the most naturally intimidating in his demeanor attitude actions of physical combat they all work for different reasons they have different strengths & different qualities traits weaknesses ect so jane didn't have to be over the top rambo bad ass (not dogging on him I absolutely love rambo) but jane should have had a bit more guts and backbone but who knows I'm sure the tragedy of his family's killing surely changed him he was probably capable & competent before as a cop/navy seal but very few people are that harcore before they've lost everything & have nothing to loose that changes everything so had the saints just came after him & his family killed many of them like everyone including his dad & mom except for just his wife & son his reactions in return would have been very very different he would have ran with his first priority to be at all costs protecting his wife & son in some ways that would have been cool if they survived were on the run for a while and then castle lost them both hence realized through double the trauma & gaining then loosing false hope him seeing what he would have had to become in order to have truly saved his family or let alone survive which he now would have no desire too his anger pain are the only thing keeping his alive pushing him towards his final confrontation with Howard saint to deliver true punishment I love how in his letter of declaration he strongly implies that it's not revenge or vengeance just for his own self gratification but well deserved punishment being served to the evil people of this world not just for his family but for the greater good & protection of all other people's lives especially the innocent sometimes it's not enough to simply incarcerate people as they are just too powerful rich dangerous to be contained forever so the must be destroyed as a necessary evil for a greater good that's how I see what the punisher does I don't agree with capital punishment because it's still murder in the eyes of god & the law it changes us as a society & it significantly lowers us down to there level but on the other hand if one man was willing to take on carrying & bearing that burden then that I will admit makes me at least second guess supporting that it sounds hypocritical I know & I guess maybe it is but sometimes doing the right thing isn't doing the right thing & sometimes you must do bad to do good the necessary evil sometimes when things get dire dangerous enough the question of doing what's right becomes irrelevant next to how are we going to defend protect ourselves especially the innocent women & children above all just like wondering asking where does evil come from which is a truly valid question worth asking is it put there by the influence of the devil supernaturally or externally by some malevolent unseen dark force or is it a natural condition within all of us with in our nature as human beings the nature vs nurture debate IDK? as it's a question worth asking & worth pursuing to find an answer as I feel it deserves an answer they say you have to ask the right questions in order to get the right answers but I believe that while it definitely seems be a right kind of question that evil is in fact a statement not a question even if we don't definitively objectively factually have an answer for the nature vs nurture aspect of evil the nature of evil is chaos & destruction while it exists it's not a matter of if but simply when it will come after you like a hungry lion in the cover of darkness (often more important than what is when) so the statement evil exists along with the fact that it will or is already coming after you has/is clearly been stated the only relevant question is what are you going to do about that fact once you begin to realize that everything isn't a question or at least good questions & somethings are simply just statements that narrows the field tremendously in being able to more effectively, efficiently think through problems then identify effective solutions, lastly take bold action to tip the balance in your favor with whatever that may be which in most cases on the most basic of levels is survival, survival of the fittest & smartest always outfits the strongest & fastest hence the reasons as to why we humans are at the top of the food chain but were still subject to be in competition with each other the game of survival is still will always be the same just the playing field has just changed as we went from tribal hunter gatherer groups to larger massive structured civilized sophisticated societies & became more numerous in numbers it's still about who can amount the most resources food shelter clothing weapons etc. Only biw we go about it by whom ever can amount the most amount of money to again in turn buy too collect accumulate all those necessary resources also now along with massive excessive amounts of luxurious luxuries with many while being very comforting & pleasurable are far from being necessary for our survival that's where we were have been & where we have gone & are now it will be very interesting to see where we go from here in the future & how the game of survival will be played as technology developments that along with expansion & breeding in massive numbers seems to be the main factor in influencing our ways of life & how we go about surviving & communicating & relating to each other greatly effecting relationships gow they form & develop over time the world is a strange dangerous but magnificent facinating place.
