Hii, If you use benzoyl chloride and a alcohol there will be HCL as by product, that can reverse the reaction that it will be making benzoic acid, how can you counter that? With using a base with separating? thanks for the video!

We use a bit of sodium bicarbonate during the work up.

Please, can I ask you about preparing ester oil?

hii do you have a written procedure for this experiment that i could use?

Set up an apparatus with a Claisen adapter attached to a 50-mL round-bottom flask. Attach a dropping (separatory) funnel and condenser to the Claisen adapter. Into the 50-mL round-bottom flask, carefully add 7.0 mL acid chloride (avoid contact and vapor) and cool in ice for about one minute.
Now add 10.0 mL alcohol dropwise (no faster than one drop per second) while swirling the flask and still cooling in ice. When all the alcohol has been added, continue to swirl in ice for 2 more minutes. Remove the flask from the ice, add a stir bar and stir (using a magnetic stirrer) for 10 additional minutes. Place the flask in a thermowell heater and heat gently for 15 minutes. Do not let the reaction mixture boil; just heat it gently. Remove from the heat and let it cool for at least 5 minutes. (Hydrogen chloride will be released from the reaction mixture. Avoid contact and vapor.)
When cool, put the flask back in the ice bath and slowly add 15 mL deionized water dropwise (no faster than one drop every three seconds) while swirling. If the addition of water generates a significant amount of heat, slow down the addition of water. Pipet out the water and discard. Wash two more times with 5 mL of deionized water. With the last 5 mL of water still in the flask, add about
0.5 g of sodium bicarbonate. Shake thoroughly, then pipet and discard the aqueous layer. Dry the ester product with anhydrous sodium sulfate for five minutes.

Whats the purpose of the water?

Water will stop the reaction so we can isolate the product.

@@Chemistryuniversity is the role of water is to convert the acid chloride in to carboxylic acid, so that reaction no longer occur?
