    I say on almost every reaction - one of SMG's best acting moments, showing true mastery over who her character *is*, is how she manages to non-verbally portray her "dropping the act" of the Buffybot and revealing herself to Spike. She barely changes expression, but it happens like magic right in camera. It's incredible.
    Personally I always look at that kiss like it like a... a token, something leftover from stories of the age of chivalry, a favor given to a noble knight if you will.

    On rewatch I now realize Anya's obsession with money originates in Real Me: Xander inadvertently gave her her prime motivation in life when they are explaining the objective of the board game Life, "If you have the most money at the end you win"

    Spike has the heart of a poet and we know he follows his heart. He was with Drusilla for 100 long years for her love. Loving Buffy has made him loyal to her. He cares too much to betray her. He's still obsessed with her and has a twisted sense of love. Plus under it all he wants to do evil.

    luv this ep.
    Only the Buffyverse would take something as silly as the Buffybot and use it to show us something new in the relationship between Buffy and Spike.
    "What you did for me... and Dawn. That was real. I won't forget it."
    We've never seen Buffy talk to Spike anything like that before.

  • @dmwalker24
    @dmwalker24 2 ปีที่แล้ว +49

    Spike always had that extremely stubborn streak for going against the grain, and doing things his way. Somewhere along the line, 'his way' became not betraying Buffy. I always found his performance interesting in the episode where he's ratting out Riley for his Vampire hookups. He clearly did it to improve his own situation with Buffy, and to get rid of Riley. There are these moments though when he seems legitimately pissed that Riley would do that to Buffy. Things are often far more complicated than just a selfish, or an altruistic impulse.

    • @partycitydumpster
      @partycitydumpster 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      And definitely also moments when he feels guilty about indirectly causing Buffy pain for what he knows deep down are selfish reasons but also isn't really capable of seeing his selfishness as a bad thing so is confused. His outburst against the mannequin in that ep (Triangle I think?) is alarming, but it's also intriguing that he's having that conflict of emotions in the first place.

      A literary device this show uses a lot is "mirroring," in which to convey deeper characterization, some characters act as mirrors to other characters. The most obvious & deliberate in the series are Faith & the Mayor are mirrors of Buffy & Giles. In the same way Giles, Willow & Xander are mirrors of different aspects of Buffy. Riley and Spike were mirrors of each other while Riley was part of the show: They both have the deep psychological need to be loved, more than in a way that's healthy. The show has a very clinical Existentialist morality to it, and in existentialism the idea that you need to be needed by another person to give your own life meaning is morally wrong. And in this way, Spike is still acting self-interested, its just that pursuit of love is his highest motivation.

    • @BarbaraYaga
      @BarbaraYaga 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@carlogiurizzato2441 Spike being an "important person" doesn't mean he's somehow exempt from the rules of being a vampire. It's more like Buffy's early comment in Lie to Me is wrong: "A vampire is a demon who sets up shop in your body, and it looks like you & talks like you but its not you." I like how the show treats these ephemeral parts of life as not having clear answers; that makes it feel very realistic. I've rewatched the whole series several times & from what I can tell its more like "the soul" is quite literally a person's conscience, and that's necessary to be a real person: The chip in Spike's head provides the same thing that the soul does. I do wish the show had focused more on the philosophical implications of why "a chip" is a less legitimate way of doing what "a soul" does, simply because one is technology & the latter is magical.

    I give a pass to the scooby gang not recognizing Buffybot because we NEEDED a light and fun episode after The Body. And we needed this kind of suspension of disbelief for the comedy to work here.

    • @antoniolamounier
      @antoniolamounier 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There were other ways the comedy could've worked. They could have assumed Buffy was under a spell. I like how Xander immediately says "they're both Buffy" once Buffy and the Buffybot are in the same room together, because it calls back to his previous experience. The writing is sort of alright for Xander, because (1) he is not that bright and (2) he actually noticed Buffy never asked about Dawn. But the writing for Willow is disappointing. She cast a spell that made Buffy fall in love with Spike, for crying out loud, and can't tell "Buffy" is not acting like herself. The fact that Buffy puts two and two together in three seconds while her best friends act like sitcom characters is very telling.
      Don't get me wrong, I like this episode, it's a good one despite these issues. But it's those things that keep it from being a Buffy classic.

      @@antoniolamounier The only reason it bothers me at all is because of the gag in 5x15 where *all* of them immediately call out Warren's girlfriend bot as what she is. That precedent makes the miss far less plausible.
      On the other hand, to be fair, none of them have much *time* to really process the Buffybot. Xander and Anya have the vampire fight and, as you pointed out, Xander still does pick up on something being a bit wrong. And then they're all just so thrown by Xander's eyewitness testimony of Buffy and Spike going at it, coupled with the idea that people are not themselves in time of grief, that it's not outside the realm of plausibility for them to miss it for so short a time.
      (On the other other hand, how the heck long a time was it? It's night in the scene with Willow on the balcony, but it's daytime when Buffy comes home!)

  • @Razmedivh
    @Razmedivh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +68

    So Spike has never been a normal vampire, "The Whirlwind" - Angel, Dru, Darla and Spike were all sired through the Master's sireline and they're actually part of a different sireline than normal vampires which makes them stronger, smarter and more emotional. You see this with Angelus because he is capable of using empathy to understand how to destroy someone completely something that ordinary vampires can't really do. You don't find this out the show but you do find it out in the comic. According to Joss/writers, Vampires don't have a soul which means their natural inclination is towards evil but they can still learn to do good for selfish reasons. Their version of love is obsession or possession so Spike sees Buffy as like this ultimate prize he can win by learning to be a good person

      Theres more to it than that: For example, the Judge in season 2 says Dru & Spike have more humanity than Angelus. The Master thing is interesting but as far as we can assume, almost all the vampires in Sunnydale came from the Master's sire line: or maybe not, as Sandy seemed pretty docile suckin on Riley, and she was made by vampire Willow, who was made by the master

    Hats off for SMG who is playing Buffy, the Buffybot and Buffy pretending to be the Buffybot. I love 'Intervention' which is downrated imo, but I guess that's because S5 has too many amazing episodes. After what happened, we needed some comedy. But this episode is also important for the season arc. We learn that Buffy's gift is death (??), we have some good fights, Glory is getting closer to find her key....and then Spike! I know he can be a creep most of the times, but he has a big heart (which is not beating!). That final scene is touching since Buffy sees William for the very first time.

      @@Nicamon humans with souls do horrid shit all the time. Souls don’t make you good or bad. His capacity for human emotion as a vampire was proven when he turned his mother into one bc he wanted to save her life. It’s been proven that someone’s personality before becoming a vampire can and does influence the vampire, it’s just about how much control they decide to have upon their actions. Being a demon makes it more difficult for them to behave with “good” actions, but that doesn’t mean they are incapable. Look at Harmony.
      Spike was literally shaped by Angelus. The most sadistic vampire we have knowledge of in the entire Buffyverse. Not all vampires have that level of behavior or sadism, or it wouldn’t be important to know the fact of just how horrid Angelus is. That should be enough for you to see that not all vampires are remotely the same and are far more complex than just being demons. It’s not a plot hole that the facts of what we know about vampires in the series is inconsistent and not fully known. It makes no sense to assume they all behave the same.
      He would have died for Drusilla just the same before he caught feelings for Buffy. If he can do it for Dru why can’t he do it for someone else? Your lack of comprehending these things doesn’t make them a plot hole.

      "He would have died for Drusilla just the same before he caught feelings for Buffy."Yeah,but,you see,the tricky thing is that dying for Buffy *also* means dying"for the greater Good"in this case.Spike was NOT protecting BUFFY:he was protecting DAWN _AND_ the world from Glory FOR Buffy. Buffy was not in a direct danger AND _when BOTH the world AND she were_ at the end of S2 he just went away DESPITE having declared that *he didn't want* the world to end because he enjoyed living in it! So why the change of heart?Why is it that NOW it's important for him to protect Dawn AND Buffy AND the world all at the same time?Why did he help Tara to discover her family's lies?WHY DOES HE CARE THIS MUCH???Where is the LINE between caring"because I'm in love with Buffy"and caring"because I'M AN ACTUAL DECENT PERSON"??? I don't care about his *motive!* Spike *is behaving like a decent human being!* Nothing more,nothing less. And if HE can do that without a soul,I must suppose ANY VAMPIRE can do it without a soul *AND SO* the role of the Slayer ceases to make sense! *THIS* is the problem I have with Spike and his character development. IF this led to put the role of Slayers *IN SERIOUS DISCUSSION* I would be on board with it. But it never does. Spike and Harmony are simply treated as EXCEPTIONS without giving any explanation or justification on how that is possible without a soul!There is *absolutely no difference* between Souless Spike and Souled Spike,just like there is no difference between Souled Harmony and Souless Harmony!

      @@Nicamon why the change of HEART? Can you read? That’s the entire point…the change of his HEART. He didn’t love Buffy in s2, you dunce. He loved Drusilla.
      Let’s stop pretending like there aren’t MULTIPLE demons in the buffyverse that are completely non violent. Your “the slayers reason for existing would cease” is beyond ridiculous, it’s literally impossible that every demon would be benevolent, just like it’s impossible that they are ALL evil. It is explicitly proven in the series that the person before can influence the vampire, that’s fact, whether you like it or not. Willow and Xander DECIDED to embrace evil, more so by being surrounded by it and being close to the Master. Expecting all demons to be the same is like expecting all humans to be the same.

But they've known Buffy for years, gone through so many things together and have great love for one another. We're naturally inclined to give "weird" things the people we love do a bit more of a pass than those that strangers do. And to look for explanations to rationalize the things our loved ones do, explanations that keep our loved ones "good" in your eyes. Which in this case is that Buffy is grieving so badly for her mother that she is distracting herself by boinking Spike.

    Spike and Tara are the 2 most genuinely good people on this show - soul or no soul. What proof is there that vampires do not have souls? Just because the watchers council decrees it does not make it so. Spike tries very hard to be evil because he believes that he should be - he has done terrible things under the influence of Angel and Drusilla, but the fact that he tolerates the insults and violence from Buffy, Giles and Xander and continues to help them despite being treated as a subhuman shows that he has a kind heart - he has nothing to gain and could just leave town or kill them as most vampires would have done - chip or no chip - he had plenty of opportunity to kill them by proxy, for example with Harmony and her minions, or he could have programmed the Buffybot to kill them

    Glory's minions thought Spike was the key because the Buffy-bot was programmed to love Spike so much that it solely focused on protecting Spike while slaying. You may have been talking over the dialogue and missed it, but earlier as well, Glory told her minions that the key would be someone who's probably new to the Slayer and who the Slayer would protect with her life. And when the minions witnessed the Buffy bot constantly focus on protecting Spike and calling his name lovingly during slaying some vampires, the minions automatically jumped to the wrong conclusion that Spike was the key, since Buffy's (the BUFFY bot) attention was solely focussed on protecting Spike.

    The Buffybot in Intervention lends for some great comedy moments, but the serious side is Spike's obsession with Buffy reaching crazy and dangerous levels. Interesting that Spike did not tell Glory who the Key was, even though he is soulless he seems to be changing, his feelings seem genuine, of course because of the chip he cannot attack humans, but nevertheless things seems very different. The kiss from Buffy is a pivotal moment in the show.

    Spike used to be William. And though he no longer has William's soul, he does have William's memories.
    William was far from a perfect guy. He had next to zero self confidence, and less talent as a poet than... well, probably anybody. But William did care about people. He was in love with Cecily, and he wanted her to love him back, even though she treated him poorly, telling him his poetry was terrible, and that he was "beneath her." William walked away. Yes, he was miserable, and sullen. But he didn't try to argue with Cecily, or to "make" her love him back (likely something a lot of aristocratic dudes in Victorian times did).
    I think William had a pretty decent sense of empathy, and though that actual emotion may not have carried over when Dru turned William into a vampire, the memory of those feelings remained. I think Spike knew losing Dawn would hurt Buffy, because he'd seen her hurt countless times before. He knew how deeply she cared about her family and her friends (something that other Slayers he'd encountered maybe didn't have in common with Buffy), but also because he remembers what it was like to care about someone else's feelings because a hundred years before, he actually did.
    (Yes, I know there were some other things to suggest William was an empathetic guy, but that could or could not be spoilery, so I've left it out of this comment. Thanks. 🤐)

    I like to think Spike never programmed Robot Buffy with knowledge of the key, but that she leaned about it from overhearing other people's conversations. If Spike truly cared about Buffy, he wouldn't have put that sensitive information in the robot's memory at the start.

    I love this episode. I do come down on the side of Spike having Buffy’s back because he wants Buffy, which is rooted in selfishness but mimics and appears like selflessness (something that a lot of romances on TV do), but it’s still deeply satisfying here.

    The reason Spike is acting as if he has a soul even though he doesn't is because Drusilla was the one who turned him into a vampire. When a human being does something evil, they are called insane. When a vampire does something good, they are called insane by other vampires. Drusilla was insane. Her insanity infects all the vampires that she created. Spike has some of that insanity, so, despite not having a soul, he is capable of doing some things that demons would consider insane. That's why he does good things now, even in the absence of a soul.

    • @menachemsalomon
      @menachemsalomon 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We'd have to see whether Drusilla sired any other vampires to see whether that checks out, or it's just looking for another excuse as to why Spike is different. Unfortunately, the only other example I can think of also has good reasons for being different, so not much help there.

    Spike wasn’t being sweet or protecting dawn ir Buffy. He was being selfish. He was being obstinate. If he had told glory she would have killed him 100%, no question. I find it strange that no one noticed that by doing exactly what he did he got free. That’s how he Final scene is just one example of the writers flushing the lore down the toilet for the novel goal of fan service.
