Been rewatching Simpsons and came across this interesting story thread. Bart & Homer going head-to-head in a Boxing game - which is like 8-bit Music, 16-bit graphics, but 3D movement (Playstation 1 era), etc. Strange mix, but again... shows more about perception of video games than realistic.
The arcade scene is also funny... this was just before the SF2 era, so interesting that one kid was hogging the boxing machine - undefeated. We'd actually see that type of thing IN ARCADES a few years from when this was produced.
Another really funny anachronism to me is they are using Atari 2600-like joysticks, but aren't holding them right. Not even a gamepad!? hahaha

This reminds me of a story a good friend once told me about his dad. This was shortly after the N64 came out, and his dad is a Doctor. His dad was annoyed that his kids were always beating him in Mario Kart 64. One day my friend got up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom or whatever, and he heard the TV on downstairs (this was at like 4am), and snuck down to discover his dad playing Mario Kart 64 by himself, evidently practicing so he could get better than his kids. I always found it funny that a doctor, who already has to get up super early and has such a difficult job, would willingly choose to get up even earlier, so that he could beat his kids in a video game.

In my childhood in the early 90s it was rare that adults played videogames and most of the time they sucked at it. So the episode really played well in that regard. Bart wipped Homers ass but when Homer put the time and effort in, he got good at the game. Ending was sad that he never got a taste of victory.

Problem with bonding over a game is you both get really, really good at it. When the SNES came out we put even more time in on Genghis Khan II and Nobunaga's Ambition. He wasn't much for the reflex games like Mario but we'd both burn hours smoking dope and joking. No regrets. Life is short. RIP luv ya Dad!

It's not just lisa who's suffering an existential crisis in this episode. Homer did too. The way bart made him feel old, weak and past it. He was suffering nightmares because of it.
That's a lot more relatable and grounded than lisa "wondering about the sufferings of the world"
The way marge made it feel that it didn't matter really left a bad taste in my mouth. It's not just a game. It was homer's pride and validation.
Throughout the episode, marge didn't know what homer is going through.

There were some good/ memorable moments in the first season, but I think you're looking at the first season with rose tinted glasses.

Man, even as a kid this made me feel soooooo bad for Homer. Also, shows are always behind video games, the NES was king at that time and they still used a control stick with one button! Get with the times man!
