    In the Old World there was a wealth of ideas exchanged across the Mediterranean. Not only did the Aztecs do this, but they did it in complete isolation. THAT is an amazing feat. It was basically a New World Venice. By the 16th century Europe already had many great cultural accomplishments. That the Spanish were amazed means it must have been truly great. Too bad we can't see it today.

You're absolutely right, mesoamerican cultures prior to hispanic colonization were in war with each other and even sacrificed people from different tribes all over the region for the gods. Even after spaniards arrived there were abandoned settlements and temples because of war.. let's not forget they all wanted more territory so... in the end it's the same bs.

    Mexicans are great people, with a heritage such as this, they are to be respected, and welcomed into North America. They work and work and ask only for meager pay. They never complain. Americans should welcome these people into the states, and make them American. Imagine the innovations they could bring if they were allowed to flourish! If America had denied my ancestors from Italy passage into America, as well as Irish and Germans, New York would not be the greatest city in America.

      Xiuhcoatl Tecuhtli Exactly right. I try not to think that way though. The Bering Strait was crossed by peoples who battled for the land now north and south america, there is even some evidence of South American tribes killing off another race of peoples that had crossed over from Polynesia. My ancestors were Romans, who conquered Sicily where my family is from. Then The Vikings came and the Moors. Its like Pete Seger wrote "This land is your land, this land is my land. Even so I still like the fact that the area I live in the US, Southern CT near NYC was uninhabitable until the 1800's due to floods. So I feel better about not disturbing sacred land. A far cry from why the Spanish did to Tenochtitlan.

    the natives didn't worship cortez or any of his men. even before cortez arrived his scout alvarado landed in guatamela and he was taken in by maya tribe...
    they didn't think he was a god.Alvarado learned their language,married and became more indegenious than euro. he wrote the account.
    when the natives saw the horse they weren't freaked out, accounts say they thought it was a new type of deer.

      in some ways, Tenoctitlan was the lost "9th wonder" of the ancient world; It was destroyed in the 1500s, (by rival natives as well as colonials, not just the spanish acting alone) but existed for centuries and was described by both natives and foreigners as "incredible."
      Like all the other "ancient wonders" barring the Pyramid of Giza, it simply ceased to exist.

      No, "Aztec" is not colonial, it's Anglo pseudo history. The Tenochcas called themselves Mexica. Tlacopans were Otomis, Texcocans were Kuhluas. Etc. Cortes brought 40000 Tlaxcallans as a "Coalition". The Conquest was more a Civil War. Learn before braying.

  • @wlomas378
    @wlomas378 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    No, he's right. But again, that isn't necessarily a mark against the Aztecs. A large city doesn't mean a good city. Considering the limited space with which the Mexica had to build on the island, 200,000 is probably as much as you could have without suffering from over crowding. This is probably one of the reasons the Aztecs started the practice of colonization in the late 1400s/early 1500s in places Xoconoco or the border with Tzintzuntzani.

    75,000 Tlaxcala people helped the Spaniards after smallpox decimated the Aztec numbers. Even with the new (overwhelming) odds, the Aztecs still managed to fight for a ridiculously long time. If it hadn't been for the Tlaxcala (even if the Aztecs still contracted smallpox) the Spaniards would have been undoubtedly been defeated quickly as they were when the Aztecs first drove them from their city.
