I recently got interviewed for level 6(technical role) and they had asked me about a situation when I stood for someone. This was asked by the hiring manager and despite me being the best fit technically (got this information separately over LinkedIn), I was not hired. Amazon unfortunately does not give feedback and that’s really not a great thing because a candidate expects feedback after giving 7 rounds of interviews. Coming back to the question , I answered that i had saved an intern when he messed up a customer’ situation over a weekend and despite my management agreeing to fire the candidate (in line with what customer had requested ) , I went ahead and save the day for the guy - who was a newbie and it was an issue of miscommunication between customer &. engineer. Now this might look like me going above and beyond our managements decision and trying to save the candidate , but that action actually saved him from getting fired. This saving of the candidate got me rejected 🤣. I can only say that don’t try to intimidate the manger thinking that you will overrule his decisions in crisis situations . Sometimes it’s painful to agree that these trick questions can override the amount of technical expertise u bring in to the role.
@@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503 My technical feedback was good and my automation skills were above bar. One of the panelist was my friend so i was informed that i din fair well with few leadership questions and frankly once I had this pointer then I could only think of this question . @@nitindubey5575 I think you’re assuming far too much. All you seem to know is that you didn’t raise the bar in the LPs. Just because you’re assuming it was that answer doesn’t make it so.
@@amazoninterviewwhizzdayone503, Of course, I am assuming but who is claiming to be certain here? It certainly is an assumption but I gave the interview and I know what criteria can add up to a "hire" or "no hire". Among those 16 LPs, it is easy to say that the bar was not raised but I can list all those 11 LP questions that were asked to me and also share the answers I furnished. The whole point is unless someone provides you feedback how can anyone say that yes this is the recipe and the LP's explained would really help?. I was applying for a technical role and I would like to know how much weightage is given to LPs. (Kindly assume that technical aspects were above the bar). This can only mean that my LPs were so disgusting that despite raising the technical bar, I just did not satisfy the engineers, managers and leaders in amazon for a technical role.
@@nitindubey5575 there’s no firm weighting but you have to be bar raising in both technical and behavioural. Being stellar in one doesn’t balance the other, they’re mutually exclusive. So you could be slightly below the bar on the LPs and the most technically brilliant person they’ve ever met and still not get an offer. The criteria that adds up to the hire/no hire is ultimately the capabilities and achievements of those people already in the business. So to be able to understand how you benchmark against that bar you either need to be 1) in amazon 2) have a strong working relationship with let’s say 20-30 Amazonians operating at your level.
HI GIG , many thanks , The third example needed a brave candidate, so I have a question if I did a big mistake and it was affecting the customer environment, is there any problem as the customer is number one in AWS, and maybe the interviewer will put red-flag as I affect customer

Hi GiGi, I too have a great failure story but it was from 2008 when I was starting out in my career which involved working alone over the weekend, folding and inserting 1000 paper letters by hand. I understand I'm supposed to use examples from recent experiences, which was also listed in Amazon's interview prep instructions. Will I get points deduced if I use an old one?
Well you’re trying to help them understand how you would deal with a failure in the role you’re applying for. So if you think the complexity of the situation back in 2008 matches what you’ll face in this role and a solution of working over the weekend packing envelopes is going to impress them and help them see how you’d manage failures in this job then go ahead. But I suspect strongly the answer to both of those things is no.
Hi GG! how do I include STAR in a failure question? If I will explain failure in the situation then what’s next..need your inputs pls Will the action part include failure meat?
I personally put all the failure stuff in situation- that way you can focus the story on all the good judgements you made to recover rather than the bad ones you made to cause the failure
Hi Gigi, I completed my GCO round-2 last week of thursday. Every thing went good. The interviewer showed lot of interest on my past job and asked questions only from that. She also asked me whether I was able to relocate and I said yes. It's been six days i didn't know my results. How long it might take. I'm from India.
GG, hoping for some feedback, I’ve just done my loop, my final interviewer pointed out twice I was saying we rather than I. I quickly corrected it to what I had done rather than we but because it’s been mentioned twice will this negatively impact me? Also, is it normal for the interview with the bar raiser to be a lot more formal and intense?
That's really hard to say definitively. If you were very clear on you're specific contribution after reminded you should be ok. There is no normal dynamic between human beings. BRs aren't specifically trained to be formal.
Hey Gigi, I have one great failure story but it's not related to the job I'm applying for - it happened when I had a different career path. Should I still tell it?
This advice is in complete opposition to what almost every single other video explains, and that is to never tell a catastrophic or your largest mistake. Most videos use the example of missing a deadline assuming that most people have jobs where they work on projects with deadlines. I agree that it is OK to stay safe, but I would suggest only going to catastrophic route if you actually have an exceptional recovery explanation.
Eerrrr that’s exactly what I say in the video. A big mistake needs an impressive recovery. Missing a deadline is a dull and run of the mill example, which as you say everyone gives and therefore won’t make you appear bar raising. But if you want to follow advice that says tell the same story as everyone else, that’s obviously your choice. You also might want to check if the other creators are Bar Raisers, or if you’re taking advice from Recruiters who don’t make the hire decisions or even better people who’ve never worked at Amazon.
So really interviewer just wants candidate tell a nice compelling fictitious (or factual) story? Why does interviewer care whether they are "blown away" ? A nice movie script is what interviewer want?
Pretty sure I didn’t suggest this. Tell a fictitious story if you like but better be prepared to be able to answer probing questions on that story without it becoming apparent you’ve made it up.
Can I use same story at the behavior interview with 5 people repeatedly if they ask same questions? or if the questions is different but my story has multiple LP?
If they've done their preparation properly no one should ask you the exact same question. Please check out today Wednesday 27th October live session for more info on repeating examples
