Usually channa dal / kadlebele is used. You can use toor dal to make this as well though. But taste will be different

Have eaten this in my friends place, not soggy at all,crispy,with sun dried kadale bele vade, they make it,and cook it with soppu.
if we add more oil and fry it for more time it will be crispy.
