Watching you guys work together is akin to going to a symphony and watching them do their thing. That chipper is too much. What power! That crane must have saved 66% of the time it wood have taken without it.
I am so glad to see you have so much good equipment for these kinds of jobs. I hope you get blessed rain for all these horrible fires. The smoke is bad here on the western slope of Colorado.
one place I worked they had a couple old Monashee mobike cranes that we used to move equiptment around the shop yard...I got good enough to be able to hook most things while sitting in the seat, but the yard foremen was the best one for that...but then that was abother life time away for me it seems. So August on a tree that big, and for how much of it you chip, how many times do you have to dump your chip truck? Just trying to figure out if I should get a big chip truck or a smaller one like the one you usually use. Thanks!
As a washed up (retired lol) boom truck operator I'd have to say that the scariest thing about those lifts is that you never really know where the balance point is when you make the final cut. Skill and experience will give you an idea but you just never know.
Several of my uncles have done professional tree work at some point. About 25 or 30 years ago we took down a water oak next to a house. It was 5 feet in diameter at the base. No crane just ropes and a tractor.
will you send any of that Black Oak to a mill? seems like one would get some beautiful grain out of that for counter tops and cabinets, of is there just too much black oak where you are from?
GREAT VIDEO👍 as always! Have a question for you.... I'm having communication issues with my rope tender & have decide to buy a set of comms. What would you suggest? (Its only me & my helper) (I'll probably install them myself too) Anyway, if you get time to answer, it would be greatly appreciated. YOU, THE FAMILY, & THE CREW STAY SAFE
I got the Sena 10R and installed them in my helmet and the ground guys helmet. It is worth every penny. It is not perfect but it is probably the best thing I have bought to make working easier.
Great video and what a monster tree! Question for you about pricing - do you price it differently now you have a crane? Appreciate that you can do more work but given that it must be easier, slightly less stressful and a shorter day - do you find the client gets a cheaper price? Or, do you calculate the fair value for the removal which is regardless of the equipment used?
In days gone by I wonder how much effort would be placed into removing a big brute like that tree, Especially without the machinery, you have to aid you. Hours of painstaking cuts or slices and drops to the ground with or without a guide or support ropes. Times have changed from here in the UK when I took large trees down with a 3 man team and only ropes and block and tackles some times. Particularly in small back yards and then carrying it on shoulders through the house to the wagon. When I was a young man in the parks in the 1960s, we used to have 10 man team taking down old beech trees using 2 handed saws and axes,!
All that big gear is fine and makes things a lot easier but it takes some of the skill and challenges out of it. Along with the cost of a crane one has access issues to consider. Personally I love rigging stuff down, the more complexity the better.
It's actually raining here in Puget sound, now, mind you, it's not heavy rain, but the smoke did clear out late this afternoon for the most part. Ah, nice! Nice video of the end of this project!
Man that's some gorgeous lumber fellas. Do you guys get to choose what to do with the cuts or is it all on the owner? Some of that black oak stuff sells for a pretty penny for table makers...good stuff y'all.
August, get a large view auto-darkening adjustable welding helmet for around 100$ with the “grinding” mode. You’ll have a lot of view and adjustment for those sunny moments. I believe for big dollars you can get a helmet with impact protection. Just a thought, be well MB crew and family
Well at least you didn't have to be blinded by the sun anymore. I hope to see my crew work like y'all do. Senas on the way. The crane and I have one. Just ordered the other two last night. I still have to scrape up the funds for my small harness. It is going to happen. We are taking a 54" live oak today. Saturday.
Get you some shade 5 glasses. Should be able to pick them up on Amazon, any weld shop will have them if not. They are between a welding lens and sun glasses.
There are a number of comments about wasting good firewood through the chipper. I felled a large ash tree not as big as the one featured in this clip, two thirds the diameter of bole but two thirds the height. I belonged to a wood turning club at the time and just about everyones said they like loads to make things. They all knew where I lived, I said come around and I'll saw stuff up as you would like it. After one year not one person had come around for free wood to turn!! I eventually converted it all to firewood for myself. I had felled it in a field 100 yards from my house moved it to my place with a ride on and a trailer across a field.
Exactly, they won’t take it unless it’s hand delivered to their house for free. But they sure like to complain about the visual imagery of seeing it chipped.
Cutting firewood is such a waste of production time for a tree service. More time. More mess. More fuel. All about perspective. Unless you charge for it.
Stan Ervin you would think so! Where I’m at in Northern California you can’t give wood away, much less charge for it. I’m talking hardwoods like oak logs, Redwood, pecan, black walnut, you name it. I have a mill and I’ve even tried to sell milled slabs, It’s just no interest around here there’s so much of it. I had a garage full of milled table slabs and benches out of black walnut, Redwood, and oak. I couldn’t even find anyone to take them for free.

How the heck do you rig those long branches if there is no high tie in point in the tree is left? I know you can not tie in to the hook according to Oregon laws, which is common over here in Switzerland. The law says when it`s safer to tie in to the hook then do it. Guys I have the feeling that you tie in to the hook nonetheless because you never showed how you rig those delicate branches. Don`t worry I will never tell the authorities. Stay safe out there I love you.
