    I just drove one for an hour. I was impressed. I cannot compare it to the Yaris, as I have not driven that car. But I can compare it to last year's Jazz 1.5. Noticeable improvement I would say. Much quieter, also less tyre noise, and a tiny bit better more balanced road holding, sharp and neutral (last year was a bit less sharp and a tiny bit of understeer).

    Have driven a Jazz and Honda FRV as our family cars for 16 years with no problems. We just live their reliability. We're really taken with the looks of the Crosstar and are test driving one this week.

    "This type of gearbox...continuously varies its ratios". I think you've misunderstood how the Jazz powertrain works. It's not a CVT gearbox, although Honda use the phrase "eCVT" in some marketing materials. What varies is whether the propulsion is coming from the electric motor and/or the petrol engine.

      So glad somebody has said this - Couldn't figure out why the gears were changing!

  • @JUANKERR2000

    The current Jazz is not a CVT; it has a fixed ratio transmission when the engine is fully engaged. Also - 7:06 - you cannot 'select engine drive', it naturally occurs at higher speed.

    The Crosstar is much better looking, plus a taller driving position.

    I've had three Jazzes -- I'll probably go for the Mk4, but not the Crosstar version.

    Nice review but a couple of points.
    It has 2 electric motors and no gearbox, you can't select different modes it's all done automatically.
    At speeds up to mid 40s or so, you're always being propelled by one of the electric motors, with the engine powering the other to generate electricity as needed.
    At higher speeds, the engine powers the wheels directly through a fixed gear like an old style overdrive.
    It is, of course, just a very efficient ICE car, but a decent choice for people who have limited charging options for a EV.

    2:43 Crosstar model as opposed to the EX(ecutive) trim also has no heated steering wheel and no blind spot monitoring, but has an updated audio system (8 speakers instead of 4), rugged styling and the aforementioned water-repellant seats.
    None of the seating material in any configuration is leather tho - it's always faux leather. The only leather as far as I remember is the steering wheel from SR or EX upwards (can't remember).

    It has no CVT, it has just electric motor pulling under certain speeds and engine connecting and pulling car over that speed.
    The CVT feeling is due to the electric motor feeling and the engine revving as a CVT to generate power

  • @XcaliburReborn
    @XcaliburReborn 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    It’s not a CVT. I know that info isn’t in the front page of the spec sheet but I’d expect a review channel to do a tad more research into the car they’re reviewing.
    In fact I’m not even sure why Honda bother mentioning the engines power under the spec sheet when it only takes over during highway speeds.
    For all intents and purpose it is an electric motor with 109hp and 253Nm of torque moving the car around sub 65mph. The engine is just a generator proving both power to the electric motor and charge to the battery for later use. When you get to motorway speeds the clutch then locks up and the engine takes over driving the wheels in the equivalent of 6th gear.
    It’s a very smart system and deserves to be properly referenced as NOT a CVT. because CVTs have a stigma of being loud, weak and slipping under strain.
    The ‘e-CVT’ is nothing like this. Think of it more like an electric car with a petrol engine generator instead of a battery pack. That’s why the jazz can get 0-60 figures of 8.5 seconds. You think that would’ve comes from a piddly little 98hp engine? Lol

    I really enjoyed the review, great step up for the Jazz, going to appeal to a larger market. Some really good specs available with cleaver packaging and some great improvements in the interior too, with lots of practically, hopefully not looked over for more comman models such as fiesta etc.

    Was just about to buy one and heard about a brake simulator fault which half a million cars have been recalled for in Japan. Other hybrids are also affected apparently. Honda have not yet recalled in the UK. Some owners report the cost at over 2k and wait time for parts of weeks. Some dealerships have paid 40% , others not. Cars affect are 2018 -2022 , Jazz, CRV, and HRV, hybrids. The brakes don;t fail completely but are compromised. We are very disappointed having owned three Hondas and were on the verge of buying a fourth. We planned to take it across Europe but this sounds scary.

    Petrol/Electric hybrids like this certainly answer a lot of the problems with EV's - cost, range, and charging times - but I do get the feeling that Hondas' drivetrain is pretty complicated - and might result in some pretty eye-watering bills as the car gets older. Having said that, high mileage Toyota hybrids with a conventional CVT transmission set-up - have a good reputation for reliability.

    The 108 up tells me that the battery power is approx 13 hp, which was the same as all Honda's other hybrids.
    It's disappointing, for something like Regen alone, a car (its battery and motor) would need more than 13 hp of braking recoupedation power
    A better hybrid is a hybrid with a better battery, hence plug in hybrids (with eCVTs)

    • @MarcoPon
      @MarcoPon 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's not. The propulsion is done by the electric motor, which have 108 bhp. The engine mostly works as a generator. Just in particular conditions (mid to high speed, low load), the engine is connected directly with the wheels, because at that point is more efficient than going trough a double energy conversion. If you floor the accelerator pedal, the propulsion is always just EV motor.

    Honda needs to go all in on all electric vehicles. PHEVs were fine 5 years ago. Today not so much.
    All electric BEVs are the standard today. Petrol and diesel are noisy, polluting vehicles.
    The Climate Crisis will impact everyone. You will not be able to hide from it.
    Farmers, ranchers and people living in cities will all be impacted. Droughts, fires and extreme weather events will impact everyone. Individuals, politicians and corporations all need to do more to protect the planet from climate change. Governments need to do more to reduce fossil fuels use.

    I question how an EV driving channel can really consider reviewing a "self charging hybrid", when they are usually so negative about the naming of such.
    I mean, come on, this isn't even a PHEV!

    • @DrivingElectric
      @DrivingElectric  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      We didn't once refer to the Jazz as 'self-charging'. The fact is, many people are looking at electric cars, but aren't yet ready to make the switch. It'd be foolish to ignore that; we're here to help you decide which car is right for you, whether that's HEV, PHEV or EV.
