I vaguely remember an old saying my grandma used to always say… “Maple board teles make it…maple board strats don’t make it” I can’t remember it exactly because I was so young, but it was something like that.
Hey Tom, a while back you, Guthrie, Neil, and I think Jack Rousch? Did a video where you were in a church walking around talking about some thing you all were going to put together. What happened with that? Or did I miss the boat?
@@501chorusecho Funny, because if the pickups and amp are smooth, without any ice-picky-ness in the treble (like my Milkman amp with a Celestian Creamback) the maple neck is great sounding and feeling ... Hendrix and Clapton seemed to agree as well. :) . Cheers, Tom. Thanks for your channel - always a fan.
@@501chorusecho Hey Tom, tell us again why you prefer rosewood on your strat, maple on your tele. You have me second-guessing my '57 now ... not that I'm good enough to hear or feel the difference ... - Chris B.
As far as the Gear Page stuff, I always think of the line "Dogs don't bark at parked cars." You're not getting criticism unless you're doing something.
Actual professional players never make fun of hobbyists. Guys who are insecure because they play one non-payed gig a month are the type who do that. There are professionals who suck on guitar and hobby players who shred. Not every great guitarist even has the desire to become professional. The original “no balls” ODR-1 doesn’t have too much bass, the reissue has too much bass. The bass cut switch isn’t necessary on the original. Probably the most natural sounding solid state overdrive of all time, but you can’t please every “pro” I guess.
Night Shift in 1982...Was fantastic...made me laugh for days. I've seen it 20 times over the years..never fails to make me smile...'I'm an Idea Man Chuck'.
I saw Waylon Jennings in 1973 at a Grateful Dead concert in old Kezar Stadium in San Francisco. He was the second act that day. The New Riders of the Purple Sage opened and my lasting memory of the show was watching their steel guitar player, Buddy Cage, up on the PA column watching Waylon's steel player. I don't know if it was Pete Drake or Ralph Mooney but he was grinning from ear to ear. Soaking in every note.
Geez, what a great bag of riffs you just threw around (effortlessly)! Ima have to steal some of those, if not most of 'em. You have a most amazing skill set!
The emotion present in that guitar’s tone is fantastic. Also… good ole Uncle Larry is single-handedly responsible for me selling my original Klon. When I bought an old “No-balls,” I knew I’d never use the Klon again.🤘🏻

The show is amazing. Please keep teaching and entertaining us in your completely original style. Question for VCB: how much has the playing style and sound of Bill Frisell changed the guitar world in the last 30 years?
To be sure Uncle Larry, every day i tag along with you through these videos, i learn something more about guitar playing, music, but also a bit about life. Don't ask many questions, they would all be too dumb, so better to listen and learn. And man, that is my kind of steel playing, and could listen to Paul Franklin's chops every day. Love that viking scale. Jim Hall used it, apparently it was a call played by two horns that announced the beginning of a fox hunt. But I can see it working equally well to kick off some Nordic pillage and plunder
ol' Larry sounds pretty damn good with a maple board after all! And kudos for bringing up that Waylon/Willie tune (again)... always one of my favs, and was hoping you were gonna jam on that a little longer a couple episodes ago.
The slide part on Free Bird is doubled simultaneously on the same guitar by tuning the B string down to G and playing the part on two G strings. Gives it that cool sound
_Feed the mayonnaise to the tuna fish while they're still alive._ Forget the line but remember the movie and appreciated the laugh and incredible tones and licks today. Thanks and remember to listen for the wail of the banshees.
I never would have guessed about the ashtray changing the sound like that. It is right over the pickup so I'm sure this is some scientific explanation but I was surprised......

I'd like a bass pedal that simulates that trunk lid rattle you hear when people play rap/hiphop records real loud in their cars. You could call it 'Hooptee Buzz"
Sounds like reverb, even a slight delay with the ashtray on….at least through TH-cam this morning, on a brain addled mind, two Iggy pops too many. Sweet sweet tele tone. Wink, wink, click, boom, spin, boom(member the secret handshake?)
I remember back in 1973 Waylon and band played their first gig in Sa Francisco on a bill with The New Riders and headlined by the Dead at Kezar Stadium in Golden Gate Park. We were all enthusiastic about the band and specifically the awesome pedal steel of Ralph Mooney. When Waylon introduced the band and got to Ralph the entire crowd gave him a standing O. That put on Waylon and Ralphs’ faces like hey, these hippie kids really like us!
