Isabel Allende's "The House of the Spirits" continues to stand as her magnum opus, a work I'm eager to revisit three decades after my initial encounter with it. She is a masterful storyteller, and I consider it a privilege to have delved into nearly her entire body of work.
She is hands down my favorite this fall what's a masterpiece The House of the Spirits is hands down some of the best writing I have ever read...thank you ma'am...wishing you more success and great health....can someone recommend more books of similar writing style please other than Garcia Marquez? How convenient that she forgets that Gabriela Mistral, a writer from her own country, won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1945....the American reporter can be forgiven this, but she knows better. I liked her first book and first book of short stories very much, nothing since.
Did you read the book, One of the most powerful books I've ever read, about her daughter that became severely ill, comatose, and eventually died. The actual true story of the fictional account of House of the Spirits. Very cathartic in a healing way, at least for me. Also, she has written repeatedly that the translator of the books (into English, at least,) is responsible for improving the quality of the writing. I don't have enough Spanish vocabulary to be able to compare them myself. I own the extraordinary work, Paula, both in Spanish and English.
@beaupianiste3738 I do own Paula, because a local bookseller purchased it and got the Spanish edition by mistake, so she sold it to me cheap. I have heard good things and do plan on reading it. But since I read them in the original, I can promise you that it is not a problem of translation. At this point, she has enough money and clout with her publisher that she should be able to determine who is going to translate her books if she doesn't like the person's work. I have seen a number of writers from Latin America and Latino writers in the US go through the switch. It is not a question of the translation. It's a question of trying to do too much in one book, such as taking up 18 flags in "the Japanese Lover", or a question of simply trying to rewrite someone else's book and not writing what she knows, as in "the island beneath the sea". That one had me screaming out loud several times. I used to defend her work, back in the days when I was in grad school and I had only read "the house of spirits" and that first book of short stories. Everyone else was saying she wrote "fluffy" books. But then I read subsequent books, and realized that they were right. And now, I am stuck in a book club that is supposed to read literature, but the post-menopausal contingent wants to read everything she drops, and I'm sick of spending hardback money on her books. It's very rare for me to not finish a book, but the last one about Chile, I couldn't even get into, because we were spending too much time reading about characters who weren't ongoing to play any kind of a role, not to mention a pivotal role, in the story. Even if I get a copy free from the library, I'm reluctant to spend time on her work

I am a big fan of her, but for God's sake what has she done to her face? She is
unrecognizable.
