Great explanation on how these pumps come apart; I have a Snapper ZT18440 KH with these pumps; one of mine is lightly leaking at that pivot shaft seal that the control arm links on. Glad to know when I do rebuild this, nothing is going to spring apart in my face as I am disassembling it:-)
Thanks for that tear down and explanation! I hate not knowing how things like that work. I also hate going to the a mechanic and paying $1500 for something I could fix myself!
Great explanation of the pump Rob. I already tore mine apart. It was bypassing when engaged. The face of the piston block and the face of the valve block were both gouged bad with the some washing on them. Waiting on my rebuild kit. Thanks for the video.

Update: It turns out the problem was I left the parking brake on. The mower ran fine for about ten minutes, then the left drive faded, and started leaking oil. Releasing the parking brake fixed the problem. I wish all my problems were solved so easily!
I just finished pulling the pumps on 500 series Toro. Left side was weak. Found thrust bearing on that side destroyed. This is the second unit that was weak on left side and had to replace thrust bearing. Hopefully this one the wheel motor is not too damaged.

Sounds to me like you have the wrong wheel motor. Did you take the wheel motor apart and work on it or did you replace it with another one? Also what about your hydraulic lines are they put back in the right spot you didn't mix them up did you?

Great video thanks for sharing your knowledge. I have a question. Is the pump supposed to suck the fluid out of the reservoir or it just flow by gravity?
Sounds to me like you definitely have a blow by inside of the hydro assembly. When the fluid is cold it's a lot thicker and will probably give you enough pressure from the get-go but once the fluid gets to operating temperature and starts to thin out a little bit is probably when it starts losing pressure if that makes any sense.
Morning, I have a problem with right hydo.Arm doesn't go forward all the way .Was told it is damper.Confused that has no bearing on forward motion only stabilizer. Wish stooping the arm from moving forward? Almost like hitting wall is it something stopping it, like rod or linkage? Please advise thank you
The problem you are having is a easy fix actually. There's a few things you can do to fix that problem both are very simple. When you push your arm forward there there is a long linkage rod you'll see that also pushes the hydro gear lever. On the end of that rod there should be an adjustment on both ends. It's usually easier to adjust the linkage at the end where it meets the hydro pump linkage adjusting that so it throws the arm farther which in return will push the hydro gear lever farther and make that side level with the other side. Also sometimes it's not in the linkage sometimes it's just the handles that have shifted forward. I'm not sure what model mower you have but there should be two bolts holding that handle on and when you loosen them you should be able to Pivot the handle back and forth and then tighten it back up. Does not sound like there's any problem in the hydro system itself it sounds like just some linkage adjustment or perhaps the handles
Great information! Thank you. If everything on the machine seems to work just fine but there is a leak between the two halves of the pump housing, do you think its probably just the gasket or is there something else that might have caused that? The exmark mower works fine but leaks a lot of oil and is probably 15 years old.
I would definitely check the gasket in between the housing. Was it ever service before or taken apart? Are you certain it's coming from the split in the middle? Another thing you can try is completely clean the unit off and dry it then sprinkle some baby powder all over it and let it sit and you will see exactly the area the leak is coming from in the baby powder. But more than likely you are probably having a gasket issue keep me posted would love to know how you make out.
Also are you certain that your shaft seal is in good condition inside? If your shaft seal is bad and you're getting blow by you're going to get a leak. I'm not sure what unit you have but there is different seals inside of these pumps around the shaft around the Piston etc all of these need to be looked over and if you're not sure if they are good or not then rule of thumb is while you have it open just replace them.
@@youtubestar thanks for the reply. It is an exmark with a Hydro-Gear pump. I power washed all the crap off of it then drove it around for a while. Both pumps are leaking where it breaks apart. A pretty big leak. I ordered the gasket kits and will pull once they arrive. I will inspect once its apart. The kit should contain all the seals etc so using your video I will see what I can do. @@MostWantedFireworks Are you 100% sure it's leaking from the middle and not from the bypass valve above? I have a 2007 Exmark Lazer with Hydro-Gear pumps that are leaking from the bypass valves. One side leaks more than the other.Just hot the valves yesterday.
Pretty much most hydro pumps have the same type of working mechanisms some will be larger than others but for the most part they all operate the same but they will change from application to application slightly
I would start with the linkage. On the side of your hydro the linkage will be connected and it's usually held on by a set screw of some sort. When you push the arm forward and backward you will see that linkage moving make sure that it is going forward a full cycle it's possible that the set screw may have came loose and it's not pushing it forward all the way. This has happened to me on numerous occasions. If that doesn't work Circle back around to me and I'll give you some tips on what to do next
If you saw in my video how the swash plate operates sounds like it's depressing in reverse completely but when you put it in forward it doesn't sound like it's depressing the Pistons all the way to build the proper pressure for the forward motion. And if you set screw came loose then it's not turning the swash plate far enough if that makes any sense.
And when you are checking your linkage if there's any bearings or pivotal points that are defective in the linkage that would affect this also make sure there's nothing loose in the linkage.
Excellent video with invaluable information! If my Scagg commercial zero turn is running slower than it used to, could that be an issue in the gearbox?
Do you have any leaks on the pump at all? Have you done all the regular tune-ups and hydraulic changes? Fuel filter air filter all that stuff? How about the hydro belt is it tight loose? If the belt is slipping that could cause you to lose some speed as well.
I'm salvaging the hydraulic wheel drives from a Toro 54" Zero turn to build a remote control snow blower. I was wondering if you would know if these drives would have the torque to push a 42"(Haban) snow blower attachment off a garden tractor or would I end up burning them out? I plan on using a 20 HP engine, salvaging a snow mobile track and suspension that I will spit in half to create a track drive.
you may see some lack of torque. The reason being.... even though the Toro Zero turn has significant weight, its on wheels which make it a lot easier for the hydros to operate on something that rolls. If you are going to be using these to physically push a mower blade with a lot of snow in front of it, I don't see the gears holding up very long. I replace these hydro gears daily because one of the main reasons they fail is because of the machines pushing or pulling too much weight that the shaft snaps. Your custom blower sounds really cool and PLEASE come back and show me pics or video when its done. Sounds like something id love to create myself.
@@youtubestar I already built one using a Craftsman steerable track drive, an arduino micro controller, Flysky 10 channel RC controller and designed my own circuit board. I use 12-24V servos and 20Kg hobby servos. One issue I ran into is backing up. Without lifting the blower housing off the ground it scrapes the snow like a plow and gets stuck. I also find it a little slow for my liking. It's meant as a walk behind and of course an operator can push down on the handles to lift the front end or twist it to get it unstuck. Maybe I need to do go a different rout for the drive then. I don't want to build something that will break down after the first snow fall and have to go back to the drawing board. I think I will go the extra mile and use hydraulic wheel motors instead. Princess Auto in Canada(where I'm from) has them. Just need to do some homework on what to use. I'm not very hydraulic experienced. BTW, Thanks for the prompt reply. I'd be more then happy to share my experience and knowledge I've gained building the first one. Slapping motors and drives to a frame is the easy part. Programming it is another learning curve altogether. But I'm getting the hang of it. The new one will also have a raspberry Pi computer for a little AI. I found some local programmers to help me with it.
I just thought of something. Since the snow blower doesn't need to go as fast as a lawnmower (7 mph) . If I made a 1:2 speed reduction so that it only goes max 3.5 mph would that not increase it's torque and prevent breakdown?
Thanks Rob, Great info! Where do we send the Windex to you for that poor foggy camera lens lol.. Also wouldn't doubt that some of these internal parts upon wearing would be the partial cause for the whine noise that Hydro's are notorious for. I also wonder why these typically use 15 W50 Synthetic Oil and not Hydro Oil. Would Hydro Oil be less likely to Cavitate than Motor Oil? Cheers!
Can i get oil on the new gasket? Will it leak if i get oil in it? I put new gaskets and had to re open the pump and oil got all over tge new gasket. Now it leaks. What shoiluold i do.
I'm a farmer and I'm all for fixing things if you can, using older parts or whatever. However, when you have a piece of equipment torn down this far and you find some bad parts or semi functional parts, the best thing to do is go ahead and put in new parts while its torn down. Because all you're doing when you patch it with old parts is delaying the inevitable, eventually it will need replaced anyway, probably sooner than later, especially with the poor quality of steel and parts these days. Everything is cheap and of poor quality so it doesn't last very long.
sorry for the blurry video. i got a new phone now but my old phone had so many cracks in screen and grease got in it. thank you for the support man i appreciate it
@@youtubestar for sure, my hydro gear started whinning loud and quit going forward trying to get it figured out, your video is helping some. It's a snapper snapper mower i inherited from my dad last year who died in a bad motorcycle accident, so i'm trying to keep it running for him
@@youtubestar Thanks. For some reason I still can't get the pump to bleed and pump again. I've tried everything that videos suggest. I've repaired one pumps in years past without any problem. I seem to be missing something.
I just have a question , before put everything back together do We have to fill the case with oil ? I looked to many videos around here ,yours is one of the top very well explained , but nobody mention nothing about the refill process . Thanks
Yes it is possible for some of the Metal to Age and wear which would cause some pressure loss. The where could be so Minimal that you don't notice it and you could have some pressure loss from the blow by in the pump
I have seen some of the pieces on Amazon and another place called Jack's Small Engines. Depending on what you need you may have to order different pieces from different places but do a little bit of Google Search and you should be able to find all the pieces you need I don't know of one place off the top of my head that sells all the pieces in one complete kit
I would check the road adjustment on the side of the pump. Sounds like it might fix it. Adjust the nut on the long throw arm that goes from pump to your handle forwatd
There's many sites online I think actually depending on the part you can find some of the parts on amazon. Which part in particular are you looking for maybe I can help track it down?
ever seen one that whines all the time like when moving, but youre in a neutral position? mine is strong and feels fine but constantly whines. did fluid and filter. no change. wheel doesnt move when jacked up so its in neutral. whines with relief valve open or closed
I get asked that question quite often. The truth of the matter is hydraulic pumps always tend to have that sound there are some brands that are quieter than others but they all will have a whining noise. Now that's not to say that you don't have a cavitation problem inside the pump which means you have a blockage of some sort somewhere but I can tell you I work on zero turn mowers all day long new and old and they all have that whining sound to them you won't find one that is completely quiet.
@youtubestar yeah i work on them as well but this is a bit much. its like how when you move the machine, initially they moan until you get going, but its doing that at all times like they its always under load. sounds like 1 pump not both
please help, i rebuilt my hydro and filled the resiviour with fluid but the lines are bled and i ran it but i cant get the fluid to pump through the system
First check the nut that engages and disengages the pressure. It's located on the pump usually in the front. Turn these if you ever need to push the machine. Make sure yours is tightened all the way and maybe losing pressure in that pump. What about the belt is it tight? Slipping at all? Could also be a clog in your charge pump on that side. It's quite a few things that could cause that type of situation.
@@youtubestar how do you remove a clog? Mine is doing same thing. Belt seems to be tight Nut fully tightened Purged system because reservoir was empty when I got it
just bought one from a random site for $100 to not spend $1000. been robbing parts off an older mower and realized i already stole the left pump. if i take parts out of the right pump would it be the same insides as a left?
I guess it's all going to depend on your actual unit but I can tell you the bobcats we work on here the pumps are pretty universal they can be used on either the left or the right. Now you may have to relocate a hose on one of them but a lot of those pumps will come with the fittings to do so you may have to move a hose from the left side of the pump to the right side of the pump but you should see a bolt on that side of the pump for that purpose if you need to move a hose just take that bolt out and screw your hose into there and cork the other side. But other than that it should be pretty universal I would say that you're safe.
@@youtubestar well I took it apart and everything seemed to move fine thumbing through the insides but put it back together and it's gotten worse before it had a bit of pressure now it's nothing. Seems the oil is moving to the left side with no pressure Racking my brain here haha
The charge pump on the very top of the unit. Are you sure you put that back on the proper way? Everything on those pumps has to be put back in a precise manner which I'm pretty sure you probably did but just mentioning it. Take off the charge pump and check and see if the little ball and spring are inside of it still. Maybe something fell out that you didn't notice putting it back together.

And when you are checking your linkage if there's any bearings or pivotal points that are defective in the linkage that would affect this also make sure there's nothing loose in the linkage.
what about the seals do they go bad ? Great job
Thanks really appreciate it good video...
Cheers!
Great Job thank u for taking time to show
Saved your boss $600 , I mean did he at least give you a $100 bonus ?
What a great video thank you so much for taking your time and and explaining it so well
Wow impresionante gracias muy buen video
The company I work for has a Dixon zt mower
Do you have a source for parts or replacement pumps that work on that machine
Great video thanks Rob! Do you have a video on how to remove the Hydro pump from the mower?
Which mower do you have?

Can i get oil on the new gasket? Will it leak if i get oil in it? I put new gaskets and had to re open the pump and oil got all over tge new gasket. Now it leaks. What shoiluold i do.
Hi mate,
Good videos!
How to put neutral manualy on great dane zero turn mower?
should be a little lever/pin to pull under the mower
Ty so much bro someone had the thing in it wrong
what if it ran dry of fluid as mine did today and stopped turning, I had a leak while mowing and one side completely locked up.
Can I rotate top of pump to change witch side it goes on?
I'm a farmer and I'm all for fixing things if you can, using older parts or whatever. However, when you have a piece of equipment torn down this far and you find some bad parts or semi functional parts, the best thing to do is go ahead and put in new parts while its torn down. Because all you're doing when you patch it with old parts is delaying the inevitable, eventually it will need replaced anyway, probably sooner than later, especially with the poor quality of steel and parts these days. Everything is cheap and of poor quality so it doesn't last very long.
Thanks
You got a subscribe from me. This video was very helpful
Thanks bro.. good information.
Bro best video i have learned alot because your video!!Thanks, but man its blurry.
sorry for the blurry video. i got a new phone now but my old phone had so many cracks in screen and grease got in it. thank you for the support man i appreciate it
@@youtubestar for sure, my hydro gear started whinning loud and quit going forward trying to get it figured out, your video is helping some. It's a snapper snapper mower i inherited from my dad last year who died in a bad motorcycle accident, so i'm trying to keep it running for him
What does the tiny spring do on the top ?
I will try it later I do appreciate you thanks god bless
Where the heck does that tiny spring go????????
The spring goes underneath of the charge plate. It should rest on top of the ball
Thanks
absolutely. Very good question. I would certainly pour some hydro fluid in the case prior to closing it up so you do not have a dry start.
@@youtubestar My respect ! thanks for your time , you just gained a new subscriber!

Thank you for sharing!
Very good video. Thanks!
Thanks man 😊
Very good teacher 🔥
Have you run into a unit that is still weak after rebuilding the one side?
Do wheel motors get weak?
Yes it is possible for some of the Metal to Age and wear which would cause some pressure loss. The where could be so Minimal that you don't notice it and you could have some pressure loss from the blow by in the pump
Awesome video man
Where can I order a rebuild kit?
I have seen some of the pieces on Amazon and another place called Jack's Small Engines. Depending on what you need you may have to order different pieces from different places but do a little bit of Google Search and you should be able to find all the pieces you need I don't know of one place off the top of my head that sells all the pieces in one complete kit
Very helpful video. Thanks alot
The problem I have with mine there was not a lot of power going forward but in reverse we have plenty of power
I would check the road adjustment on the side of the pump. Sounds like it might fix it. Adjust the nut on the long throw arm that goes from pump to your handle forwatd
@@youtubestar thank you very much for your fast response I will try it
Thank you! Got a rebuild kit coming. I’m missing a couple ball bearings though. New sub.👍
Do you know the part number for the repair kit for gravely zero turn hydro pump 09285200?
Damn good video !!! Great job !!
You are awesome thanks
How did you get to the seal? Mine is leaking
Hey Rob, can you tell us how to get the rebuild kit for the pump you were working on?
There's many sites online I think actually depending on the part you can find some of the parts on amazon. Which part in particular are you looking for maybe I can help track it down?
thank you
What if is leaking
ever seen one that whines all the time like when moving, but youre in a neutral position? mine is strong and feels fine but constantly whines. did fluid and filter. no change. wheel doesnt move when jacked up so its in neutral. whines with relief valve open or closed
@youtubestar yeah i work on them as well but this is a bit much. its like how when you move the machine, initially they moan until you get going, but its doing that at all times like they its always under load. sounds like 1 pump not both
got mine figured out. turns out was the closest idler pulley to that pump whining.
Great video! Thank you!
please help, i rebuilt my hydro and filled the resiviour with fluid but the lines are bled and i ran it but i cant get the fluid to pump through the system
Did you replace the charge pump?
which oil do you feel is best to run in this system?
Wondering if you would know what would be causing one side of my zero-turn mower pulling normal and the other side not hardly wanting to pull at all?
First check the nut that engages and disengages the pressure. It's located on the pump usually in the front. Turn these if you ever need to push the machine. Make sure yours is tightened all the way and maybe losing pressure in that pump. What about the belt is it tight? Slipping at all? Could also be a clog in your charge pump on that side. It's quite a few things that could cause that type of situation.
@@youtubestar how do you remove a clog? Mine is doing same thing. Belt seems to be tight
Nut fully tightened
Purged system because reservoir was empty when I got it
thank you so much!
just bought one from a random site for $100 to not spend $1000. been robbing parts off an older mower and realized i already stole the left pump. if i take parts out of the right pump would it be the same insides as a left?
If you don't mind me asking what unit are you working on is this a bobcat machine?
