The problem is there’s a very loud group on the far right and a very loud group on the far left, but the vast majority of us are somewhere in the middle. I’m a few degrees left of center.… But disagree wiith the crazy far left ideologies… I 100% disagree with the ideologies of the far right. I think the problem is that as time goes on the rift between the two grows and it becomes more and more difficult for people to have conversations if they are on these different sides. I grew up in a liberal blue state back at a time when things weren’t crazy. My parents did not always agree politically but they were always able to have thoughtful conversations and agree to disagree. I don’t always agree with my husband politically but we respect each other and can have conversations without fighting. Often times we agree that we want to see the same end goal and the disagreement is about how to get there. I think that is true for many people.
Unfortunately, with how far the divide is, with all the political rhetoric, with the media, leaning into the divide it pushes us further and further away and makes it more difficult for people to actually have open minded conversations. It just becomes polarized and tribal and each side demonizes the other. Honestly, I am afraid for the future of our country. We all need to learn how to listen to each other and come together and both sides need to compromise a little bit so that an agreement can be reached. That means not everybody gets everything that they want.
