  • It may be hard to imagine but did you know that something useful could actually be derived from human waste? As stinky as it is, human waste is a viable energy option whose surface Kenyans have barely scratched. Like cow dung, it readily forms Biogas, a renewable source of energy which can solve your energy problems. And as our senior reporter Slvia Chebet reports, this untapped potential could save you the trouble caused by the current energy crisis in the country.

I was looking on the web for idea like this to be implemented in Kenya. So it was a pleasant surprise to find already a working idea. The only other issue that might cause concern is the cost of the project in the university, Kshs 9000000 that is about $ 90000 US dollars, that is too high. All you need is cement which is right now $100 per tonne. In other word this thing shouldn't cost more than one bedroom apartment to build even in an institution like university with 5000 students.

The government should not only give the slum dwellers proper sanitation and energy, but also work to eliminate shanties by setting a target for housing every year, but also extend and subsidise the hardware for biogas production to the rural areas where they keep cattle to save on trees. We need education, thinking and investments. Simple things that can change our country. Kudos Prof. Kahangi, you gave us tissue culture bananas, now champion biogas. I am proud of you and of JKUAT!!!!!

    Good move from Kenya!! Nice....
We can set up workable systems and structures that would support innovations and inventions in the areas Science and Technology. The government, our governments, various governments have their roles to play. Also, non-governmental organizations and private companies have their roles to play. And individuals have their own responsibilities.

hot water is a big thing once you've had it you don't want a cold bath or shower especially in cold areas during winter its really does not turn out to be pleasant.if i can take a dump and it turns into hot water for washing etc then good i say. i do have a problem with the price estimates though 100,000 shillings i mean wtf can you not put that in a more rational pricing. so after i watch this i look at currency converter i guess or maybe right now....

as of today this is what its costs 1 Australian Dollar equals
89.50 Kenyan Shilling so basically your saying that you gotta have money to do this. sounds like this could be made in a lot cheaper way where more people could benefit not just those with money.
