  • Which is better, lighter or stronger motor?
Bristol is an eclectic City, filled with culture, heritage, vibe and hills. Lots and lots of hills. Dan and Rufus spend a late winter's day exploring the area and deciding which e-bike is better, the Riese and Muller Roadster Touring or the UBN Five Silent.
    The hills in featured are:
    Constitution Hill
    St Michael Hill
    Park Street
    Whiteladies Road
    Vale Street

Thanks Dan. I visited the Nailsworth shop yesterday for a test drive up the hill by the shop and managed about 8 mph most of the way. My first time riding an e-bike, not having ridden any bike for over 10 years, 70 years old with health issues. Absolutely brilliant. I put a deposit down on the Homage.

We don't do flat where I live, hence the R&M bikes with Rohloff gears. I makes life so much better.

No hill can stop me and I don’t have electric. Ok I’m going in the other direction.

Thank you! That made me happy about owning the roadster. When the UBN acame out, I felt some sorry because it’s advertised as quiet… and the roadster, is not quiet! I got used to the buzz… but was still thinking about the UBN (not available in the us yet)… now I have 0 regrets! I am happy with my roadster, works like a charm, 0 maintenance after 2500 miles!
Expensive? Yes, I ditched my car!

These are very top end bikes and I’d love to own one but they are at least a grand more than marginally less premium bikes e.g. from Cube or Gazelle or Kalkhoff and twice as expensive as the lower end of the market (where ‘buy cheap, buy twice’ is probably a good saying to bear in mind.)😊
The difference between the riding experience on these two bikes is mainly down to two simple factors: the torque output of the motors and the gear ratios. To make the video more instructive for viewers you should quote these figures. Off the top of my head I’d guess 60Nm vs 85Nm and 280% vs 425% or so? Chalk and cheese in other words.

Thanks Dan and to be fair to your age limits, I am 70 , have not ridden a bike in years and my last one was an adult sized Chopper Bike. So do not skimp on cash when wanting to go home from the shops laden down with shopping and facing a 1 in 6 hill that carries on going upwards for about a mile in distance and incidentally is located on the south side of Aberdeen in Scotland. If you want to check it out on Maps ?

Would be interested in seeing the Riese & Muller Roadster Touring vs the Charger 4 Touring for the steep hill test. The Charger 4 has the new smart system, more battery capacity but still the same 85nM of torque.

Ordered the UBN five silent for short trips 50k til 100k I live in holland but good to see it can handle hills albeit with a bit of human effort.
    Thanks

I do not understand. You are testing how hard you need to work to ride up a hill.
