One of the most richly deserved Cinematography awards ever. "Days of Heaven" was In the 10 or so best shot films of all time
One of the most beautiful Cinematography ever created no doubt.
Totally deserved the win. I took a cinematography class twice, and many experts cite this film as having the Best Cinematography of all time. It invented the term "The Malleck Hour" in which you only shoot during sunrise and sunset for the best exposure.
He did not invent it.
I worked on the film and Nestor became a dear friend. Wonderful, gifted man, gone too soon. I asked him what his first thought was after he won. He said, "Kim Novak just got body makeup on my tuxedo" :)
I know this comment is three years old, but I'm asking anyway because I'm curious, what work did you do on "Days of Heaven"? I've read a bit about the production and it seems like it was a unique experience. Malick was clearly just finding his voice.
Your friend Nestor certainly deserved his Oscar. Beautiful cinema.
@@mcnultyssobercompanion6372 a long delayed reply from an old comment! I worked as a production assistant (just out of high school). It was a VERY difficult shoot. Nestor was a wonderful person - we remained friends though is all too short life. Malick NEVER knew what he wanted - drove all of us crazy. He was finding his voice - but irresponsibly so, given the producer nearly lost his house to finish the movie. Nestor was too kind - HE was far more responsible for the look of the film. Haskle W was a DICK - he was only there for the last few weeks and tried to take credit away from Nestor as if he shot the entire film. HOPE YOU SEE THIS!
This was Kim's 'return' (one of many) to Hollywood. It was her first Oscar appearance in 13 years. In an interview that night, she stated she was happy to be back and eager for work hoping to do real 'interesting work like An Unmarried Woman'. Ahh fate. Kim's comeback made headlines the next day. Indeed Kim in that black gown graced many front pages while the winners were relegated to the inside. Now THAT'S a Star!!

Kim Novak looks stupdendous in this clip. A great Star. Right after this appearance Kim joined Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson, Tony Curtis and Angela Lansbury in The Mirror Crack'd. See it as Kim gives a great performance and more than holds her own in her scenes with the equally beautiful and talented Elizabeth Taylor.
My favorite Kim Novak film is Strangers When We Meet among her classic films Picnic, Man With The Golden Arm, Pal Joey, and Vertigo.
Loved that Film !!! Saw it in the Movie theater in Hollywood !!!

Néstor Almendros, uno de los grandes del cine, maestro de la luz y hombre afable y muy querido. Cuando en su país, España, no se le reconocía lo suficiente, en la recogida del Oscar empezó su intervención dirigiendo un saludo a todas las personas de habla española. Vivió poco en España, pero siempre se sintió un español de Barcelona. Grande Néstor.

@@espectaculosloar4495 ¿Política? Efectivamente era catalán. Era un español nacido en Barcelona, y así se sentía. Nunca renegó de sus orígenes, aunque no vivió mucho en España. Estaba orgulloso de su ascendencia española y catalana. En 1965 recuperó la nacionalidad española. Pidió ser enterrado junto a su madre en Calders (Barcelona), pueblo de donde procedía la familia materna.
¿Español de Barcelona? Jaja que buen chiste si este señor se hizo en Cuba, Italia y Francia, de español solo tenía la partida de nacimiento y vivía en Nueva York.

I read that she met up with him before the show and during the after party she danced with Sammy Davis Jr. with no cameras or repercussions and he was so elated to be able to share some time with someone he still loved so dearly without having to pay a price for it. I am sure that night held a lot of memories for both of them. And damn, didn't she look unbelievably beautiful that night!
Pay a price for what? No one would've cared. It was the 1970s not the 1870s. Geez.
@@mrlopez-pz7pu not one? Kim Novak and Sammy had a romantic relation back in the 60's and Press and Columbia Studios forced them to finish the relation. That was the price. Racism all the way.

Kim Novak looks sensational! Having seen her in a recent interview with Robert Osborn on Turner Classic Movies, she continues to look good at 80. It's unfortunate that she wasn't given additional opportunities to act in high quality films during the 80s and 90s. She should have more good work on her resume other than Picnic, Pal Joey, Vertigo and Middle Of The Night.
One of the best Oscar wins ever for Cinematography. Mr Almendros other nominations for The Blue Lagoon and Sophie's Choice well deserved too. Only hoping some day to get to see this beautiful movie on the big screen again.

They say timing is everything? If Marilyn Pauline Novak aka Kim Novak would have got her start 7 years earlier at the time as Norma Jean Baker aka Marilyn Monroe it may have been Marilyn Novak, and Kim Baker? Wow Kim is 80 here (90 now in 2023) looks amazing, and still has that soft velvety smooth deep half whispering voice. Sexy beyond what the law allows. Hope you make it to 100 or more if healthy, and you want to? God Bless you Kim/ Marilyn.

Eso de "las 5 mejores" es ridículo, cada película tiene su gracia y hacer listas es inútil.
Haskell Wexler actually sat through the film with a stopwatch to verify that fully half the shots were made by him! He did though concede that by and large he was following Almendros's instructions and techniques.
Indeed. Along with ''The Tree of Life'' they probably have the best coloured photography in film. Both Terence Malick films of course.

yes...I agree with you...but she was excellent in some of her lesser films...Jeanne Eagles, Strangers When We Meet and Of Human Bondage....though I love these films and her performances in them , they are not highly regarded and in the case of Bondage she was unfairly massacred by the critics.
No dislikes. That means Haskell Wexler hasn't seen this yet.
I worked on the film - Nestor became a lifelong friend. Wexler was a dick. He only worked for the last few weeks, but because Nestor was not in the AMERICAN CINEMATOGRAPHERS GUILD, Wexler tried to take sole credit for the entire film. Total asshole.

It would have been nice if Nestor Almendros would have worked with Michael Cimino.
Oswald "Ossie Morris" was so disappointed by the financial failure of _The Wiz_ , that he only came out of retirement to shoot _The Great Muppet Caper_ and _The Dark Crystal_ at the cajoling of Jim Henson. But I wonder how he'd feel if he knew he was nominated for an Oscar for it. Then again, after decades of shooting massive epics, he deserved a break at 56.
Most beautiful color cinematography ever to win. Ironic that the clip of this award features such poor photography.
Also, Coburn's reading of the title was cut off in the process of editing out the brief _Days of Heaven_ clip due to copyright reasons. (Stupid, I know.)
What about the color cinematography of Barry Lyndon? Days was awesome, but I don't know...
It's television not a film.
The commercial failure of Novak's films made in the early to mid 60s ultimately had a negative impact on her career. Billy Wilder's Kiss Me Stupid with Dean Martin was a disaster; the Robert Aldrich film Legend Of Lylah Clare also tanked and she was no longer working with A list directors. Novak acknowledged in her TCM interview that she didn't push for better scripts and better films i.e. Vertigo.
And at the 1989 Oscars Show, she acknowledged in her TCM interview in 1997 that she din't push for better scripts and better scripts after the death of James Stewart.
