Good to see you without the neck brace! Nice compost and setup!

Thanks. Neck is a bit stiff, but so good to have that brace off. Yeah the composting set up works great - best of all its free.

We are based at the top of the South Island and are just about to build our first 3 bin compost system. We are trying to become urban homesteaders and may also incorporate Huw Richards idea of creating compost between the pathways of the raised garden beds by heavily layering wood chips which break down over time and more quickly as you walk over them so it serves a double purpose. Once it is broken down you remove it and use it as compost and put a fresh layer of wood chips down. When you are limited for space every available option to create your own compost is at least worth a try. We already have a hungry bin for the worms. Good to see a NZ You Tuber.

The top of the South Island, that is an unbelievably beautiful place to live. Wood chip path ways are the best. Ive been following Charles Dowding for years and pretty much copy everything he does. Thanks for watching and commenting

I make compost on a regular basis from my garden in Sydney. I think people are too worried about levels of different materials. I have a three pallet board system with two always on the go or composted. When I have enough material , which is generally, shredded paper, cardboard boxes and all the different plant material both green and brown from my garden. I generally don’t worry about two thirds brown, one third greens, I just approximate. My key to it all is to put it all out on the front grass and mow it over, giving the microbes a better chance at more surface area and mixing it at the same time. I might add a stimulant such as comfrey or coffee, blood and bone if I have it or a compost tea starter. Great compost every time. You don’t have to be anal about it. One hint though, rose thorns survive every time and they hurt when handling the compost😂

Thats a great tip - we have a load of rose bushes - will keep that out. Yeah I am the same the the ratios - I never have enough browns so typically have way more greens in the pile. We also put loads of urine in there as we have a composting toilet - forgot to mention that

Plain brown cardboard makes a great source of brown carbon material. I don't use highly colored cardboard, but plain, corrugated cardboard with any tape or stickers removed and torn up into pieces works really well.

I read a massive thread on reddit today - for and against cardboard. I'm still ambivalent about it. I find it really useful in the garden and it is so easy to get hold of.
