How to give Goat Kids their first Shots

This is how we give our Goat Kids their first shots. We give it at 3 weeks old. Then a booster 3-4 weeks after the first one. We use Clostridium Perfringens Types C & D -Tetanus Toxoid vaccine. It is important to give shots before you band bucks/buckling's. This helps prevent tetanus. We use a 20 gauge 1" needle. All goats receive 2ml regardless of age / size. we give our goats booster shots yearly as well. These are subcutaneous injections, which are under the skin. NOT in the muscle (Intermuscular Injection). Given in the area just behind the shoulder. This is a good spot as there are less veins and no major blood vessels in this area. Always pull back the needle to check for blood. You should get a small air bubble if placed properly. Inject slowly . Its ok to feel a temporary bump under the skin. It may itch.
