Craziness part of this video is not knowing that a power bank can't be packed in checked in baggage ( This is a global mandate by all airlines) nothing to do with India or Air India. Looking at the video I was actually very impressed with the Air India customer service.... The way the situation was professionally handled.

I flew Air India for the first time last month. Paid $480 USD for business roundtrip from DAC to DEL. There was a nice bonus of having to go DEL-BOM-CCU-DAC on the way back, which meant spending a full day in Mumbai and then another in Kolkata. I heard AI was the stuff of nightmares, but I was very impressed with the service and did not find any of the airports to be chaotic. I also flew on the new A320neo, except for a 787 from DEL to BOM. I agree that it's strange to see an old cabin hard product on new airplanes. The Tata investment in Air India is supposed to vastly improve the airline. On another recent trip, I flew IndiGo. At some point I want to try Vistara, which is supposed to be the best airline in India.

I agree with the comments below. In India they always ask: "Do you have any power banks?" when a person checks in luggage. You can ignore the question, but you cannot really complain if the rule is enforced. In contrast to most countries, India is now enforcing the rule through scanning check-in luggage for power banks. The service in Delhi airport was very professional, they could have just off-loaded Noel, or thrown away the power bank, but he was able to take the scanned power bank in checked in luggage. I don't think there was any possibility of Noel being denied boarding as the airline staff were fully aware of what was going on. It also happened to me in Kolkata last month (forgot the printer battery was still attached), and so will be sure to detach it in the future, as I am sure Noel will. Enjoy your travels in India Noel, it's a fantastic country.

Some years ago I accidentally put a power bank in my luggage departing with TAP Portugal from Frankfurt. At the destination I found a simple note inside the bag, that it had been removed for security reasons. It was brand new. So you're lucky to have been notified. The rule is, any built in lithium battery as in Laptops, Camera, Tablet ist allowed, single lithium batteries like power banks not. Those have to be in your hand luggage.

    • @PauloGaetathe_original

Exactly, in the hand luggage it will be detected by the X Ray machine but you can show that it's not an explosive. In the checked luggage they don't know exactly what it is. So they may open the suitcase and confiscate it.

I literally had to run behind an escort down to the sub-level and then run back to the plane, where I was greeted by a sea of annoyed passengers' faces. I was shocked that they held the flight for me. My experience with every airport employee involved was positive. Noel, you never HAVE to tip anyone in India to receive amazing service. Noel, seems like you have a panache to criticise your travel in India excessively including framing your video titles when it was CLEARLY your fault to not know the rules about packing batteries in the check-in luggage. Your airport experience wouldn’t be “Crazy” if you did some research. Heck, even the airline and airport websites have it. Plus the tickets have the information too. And you can definitely not miss something this important while checking in because you’re informed about prohibited items. In other words, you were negligent.
You could pick other airlines too, we have Spice Jet, Indigo apart from Air India.. if the colour scheme was not to your tastes.
I have seen your other india travel videos as well and it’s just full of uncalled criticism. In the end, I think you were definitely not the right ‘tourist’ for India. A traveller needs to be better than this… instead of whining about every little thing.

However from Airport to Kalaburgi one gentleman gave him a free lift and felt relieved that this excess charging was compensated by someone else.

‘Thermal runaway’… the reason lithium batteries should never be left in checked in baggage.
All lithium batteries should be carried onboard as part of your hand-luggage, so if thermal runaway occurs, then the device is accessible to the cabin crew who can deal with it.
If thermal runaway occurs to a device while in the aircraft hold, (and is therefore inaccessible), it’s quite possible that the plane will catch fire with no way of extinguishing the resultant fire…(fire extinguishers within aircraft holds are not capable of extinguishing a fire caused by thermal runaway).

Power banks aren't allowed in checked-in luggage in the UK, not just India. They contain lithium, which has been known to start smoking or even bursting into flames. It's the same problem with e-cigarettes. Have one in your pocket, and it starts to burn, and you'll know about it. Packed away as hold luggage at 37,000 feet isn't such a good thing.

I was fortunate enough to fly through Deli (San Francisco>Delhi>Pune) a few years ago. Funny thing, I got off the plane in Delhi and (after customs/immigration) went to the domestic lounge and had a Mirinda... I had a baggage issue as well (not quite the same as yours, but it was my fault) and the Air India and airport staff were very friendly and helpful in getting it resolved.
FYI, that KFC was already there, they must just be remodeling it.
FYI FYI - The SFO to Delhi flight and return to SFO both flew east, meaning I flew around the world on that trip. Selfishly I think it would be fun to see you do that one someday.

In my opinion this is not some “crazy experience” this is a safety precaution that you are not exempted from. I have always found security at Indian airports (especially New Delhi !) to be very strict, especially with the inspection of hand luggage pre-boarding. Interestingly, I found security at the international terminals very thorough. In Chennai I had to show my ID outside the terminal to machine-gun toting soldiers who checked it against a passenger list before letting me in, but when I flew out of the domestic terminal at the same airport it was lighter than U.S. security. I had a water bottle with me and the X-ray guy just asked me to take a drink from the bottle and let me through with it. At International it was metal detector AND wand screen for all pax. IIRC because it's quite conservative they have separate metal detectors in most places for men and women.

1- Foreign tourists are targetted more as it results in international diplomatic backlash.
2- Foreigners are often used to carry out recces of targeted areas. That's because tourists are less suspicious and common Indian folk tend to trust them more. For example- a gentleman from the US Richard Hadlee was a prime co-ordinator in the Mumbai incident in 26th November, 2008. In that incident, the foreign tourists were targeted more than Indians. So, i can imagine the security would have been more painful for you guys.

It is not electronics that they don't allow. It's the lithium battery that they don't allow. Actually most airlines do not allow large lithium battery to be packed. Every time I check in with Cathay Pacific, they ask me if I have batteries in the checked bags (including a laptop with battery, etc.). If a laptop is inside the checked bag, then it should NOT have the battery in it. The battery has to be taken off the laptop and put in the carry-on. That is, obviously, to prevent fire in the cargo hold.
