  • This video shows short highlights from the full version available for sale from Manchester's Museum of Transport. It shows the Museum's 2006 LUT 100 event, from the preparation before the day to the free bus services and the displays commemorating what was once Britain's biggest, and probably one of the most affectionately remembered, local bus companies.
Once upon a time, Lancashire United buses could be seen over a broad swathe of south Lancashire between Manchester and Liverpool. The company ran trams, trolleybuses and above all buses in their famous red livery unti in 1976 the company was swallowed up. For one weekend in 2006, LUT buses were back on the road again at the Museum of Transport.

8151 VBA151S was a GMT standard Atlantean new in 1978 and had lasted longer than other Atlanteans, 20 years to 1998. Some buses stay allocated at one depot all their lives, others are moved around for different reasons. I think 8151 had been at Manchester Hyde Road, Princess Road, Tameside, Stockport, Salford Frederick Road, Weaste, Hindley, Leigh and finally Atherton. When new 8151 all LUT buses were red, not one in orange and white, and the oldest still running were the last in the 1959 xxxJTD batch possibly 116 and 122JTD that belong at the museum.

Sounds so different to a Leyland Titan, Bristol Lodekka, Daimler CVG, and AEC models. Blackburn, Accrington, Chester, and LUT were the only operators in the North West who had Guy Arabs.
