A very sad past for Manchester.
I was part of the slum clearances in 1957. Thank you for making this film. Well done

When you hear people going on about their problems today they have probably never had things so good in their lives compared to the poor souls in the old slums of Manchester . Thank you so much for sharing this video and shining a light on this shocking past .

Hi Clive. Thanks for your comments on Angel Meadow which mirror my own. I produced a second version, Manchester's Angel Meadow and St Michaels flags (extended), because of the many questions i was asked, many of which i had no meaningful answer to offer. Kind regards BJ.

My great, great, great grandmother, Maria - a first generation Irish immigrant, and her son and his family lived in Church Court, near the church. There were six of them- possibly in one or two rooms of a back to back. Your informative film helped give some idea of the deprivation that they must have endured. Thank you. Maria lived to a ripe old age, but died in the workhouse. I often wonder what she would make of her descendants travelling the world, going to university, etc.

Hi David. Thanks for you comments on Angel Meadow. The conditons were more than extremely bad. Much of what we know in general today is down to Engels and his friend Karl Marx. It is claimed that Manchester's industrial revolution and the plight of the working population that followed it, may have inspired those two to develop the concept of communism. My view is that in the frenzy of the new discipline of powered machines, industrialist and many others lost sight of what was happening under their very noses - nothing changes much does it. Your Great Grand mother Maria would be proud and astounded. Regards BJ

When you travel on the Metrolink (tram) to Victoria from Oldham , just before you get to Victoria sometimes you stop at a red light straight outside the Charter St Mission. Many times I've tried to get a look inside but the windows are frosted or at an angle that restricts your view. There is something about that part of town that fascinates me, from Victoria to Angel Meadow over to Ancoats and the other way and Strangeways. Strangeways is actually an area name not the name of the infamous gaol. The Brewery was also called Strangeways. Maybe it's because it's so old it intrigues me? Chethams school is very old too and the original building still stands. Thanks again

Thank you very much for this video I have been searching so long to find something like this about Angel Meadow. It is believed my ancestors lived in this area during very hard times. I work at the new co-operative head office and find that I now walk in the same footsteps as my ancestors did all those years ago in what is now very different circumstances, for which without their existence, I would not be here today. I'm very humbled and extremely moved by this short yet powerful video of such an important piece of history in which lies close to my heart. Thank you so much.

What a great vid, I've seen both of them now and was really enthralled so much so I have sent off for two books on Angel Meadow. I am approaching 70 now but back in the 1960s I worked as an apprentice for NW gas and was based at Gould Street gas works which faced a tobacco factory. It was a really horrible area and even on a sunny day it was miserable. How anyone could live (sorry exist) there in the Victorian period is beyond me. Once again thanks for the videos.

Hi Ian. Sorry for the delay in a reply, problems with my lap top now fixed. Yes the CWS tobacco factory now converted dwellings i think. We don't know we are born these days!!! I was shocked when i discovered the history that surrounds this notorious part of Manchester. I had such a response i produced an extended version that delved a little deeper into this place.

That was a great video. My ancestors lived around that part of Manchester. Even when the slums were gone I remember going into town as a kid with my mum. She used to park the car where a building used to be and I used to go and stick my head over the wall to see the giant rats in the canal. I don't think I've ever seen rats like that since. I had no idea at the time my ancestors were from around there. I am very proud of the fact I am Mancunian and that is what myamily survived and I think they would be too if they could see where we are now.

Wilfred(Billy) Hopkins wrote about his mother's childhood and his early childhood in Angel Meadow before they were bombed out in 1940 and were re-housed near Smedley Lane Cheetham He wrote 6 books altogether , The first two were largely dictated by his mother Kate Lally , before her death in about 1979 His books are a slightly fictionalised account of what really happened. His way out of poverty was passing the 11 plus and going to Xavarian College in 1939 His first 2 books are called Our Kid , and Kate's story. He writes about his aunt and Cousin living in the basement of their house in "Butler Court ". I have found his family in the 1881 Census.

Just finished reading the book "Angel Meadow" by Dean Kirby and now part way through "Forgotten Fields" by John Marsden (covering the hidden graveyards of Manchester), this video adds a bit of further interest to this area of Manchester. Have worked in Manchester from the early 1950's through to the early 70's and driven through this area and Red Bank hundreds of times without much thought about its past. Having over the years researched by own Manchester family history your video adds a bit more colour to my memories. Thank you.

However i did know that it had a colourful reputation and as a consequence never ventured there much, i did visit Shudehill and the Shambles in the 1950's but i was on the look out for second hand bargains. Thank you for your comments, it is my intention to expand the current video in the near future.

My great great grandfather lived in Angel Meadow and my grandfather was born there. Their house was opposite the Charter Street Working Girls home where a warehouse now stands. Great great grandfather was a beer retailer in those days. The street was then Charter Street and i found the Oxford University excavations fascinating. Those back to back houses with the cellars where the Irish lived together with their family and animals must have been 'hell on earth'.

Hi. thanks for your comments. I was born in Moston my parrents had a pub. My trips to mancheser on the 65 bus took me near this area but i was always told to keep away but i ignored that advice and sadly at 16 years of age i was mugged on Red Bank, silly me. Six months ago i started to research its history and was saddend by what i found out. The TH-cam clip is a short version of my video but i still have an interest in the place and will continue to uncover what i can. Pictures are in short supply. Once again many thanks for you comments Regards BJ

My grand mother was a Kilcourse and lived in the 'Meadow until she met my granddad who lived in the Greengate tenements. Her elder brother started a stall in the local meat and veg market (my brother had a unit there when it became the village project in the early 80s), but now in my late 70s I can still recall the tales my gran used to tell, many quite naughty and she said that times were hard, but they all worked as a community, something that folks today can take a lesson from

Excellent Video I already knew of Angel Meadows having watched a video on the area by Martin Zero..
Many towns and cities had a area like this when industrial Revolution started and people flooded into already crowded cities. As a Londoner there were many places normally near to obnoxious industry where cheap Jerry built houses were thrown up by unscrupulous landlords
Many persisted into the 20th century Many nears the Docks were flattened by the Luftwaffe and Many people moved out if London to places like Harlow Stevenage and other New Towns.

I somewhat stumbled across this video and just want to say to you Barry, well done for making it. I work in this area of Manchester and know a bit about the history of the area but your video has helped magnify my view of it greatly. I thank you for it. You may also be interested to know that the car park shown in your footage is currently being excavated in way of a modern development but in doing so has revealed some old brick work and clear outlines of historic buildings beneath the surface right alongside the ragged school. They may not be from the 1800s but a view of the past none the less.

O RC. Thank you so much for your comments on Angel Meadow. As a result of the interest it generated i produced a second video of the same title with (extended) added on. I was born in Moston Manchester but in all the time between 1950s until i made the first video i had never been to Angel Meadow, so i had to let people know about this special place. You may find that the second video introduces more details that could be of interest. many thanks BJ

'Angel Meadow: Victorian Britain's Most Savage Slum' by Dean Kirby and had to find out more. What an eye-opener. We have no idea just how lucky we are today, despite troubles of our own. Really feel for those poor people and their plight. We should never forget them. Thank you Barry!

@@SuperBarryjackson Thanks Barry, your account on Angel Meadow is very moving and I keep thinking of those poor people. Such poverty is surely a crime against the human race. How could their 'masters' allow them to live (exist?) in such inhumane conditions? Glad we have moved on, although we still have a lot to do!

I'd heard of this about 2 years ago and started looking where it was and thought I knew it. Between the Angel pub and Marble Arch pub. What a nice name for a horrible place. Maybe from when it was fields and maybe owned by someone called Angel? Or was it such a nice place before it became a slum area and got the name? Hard to imagine fields and cattle and sheep when you see it now. Here we have a road called Penny Meadow from Penny's Meadow in the old days.

Good video and when people talk of the good old days i think sometimes they forget how things were for some. Also some religious people in modern times talk about how the world is in a terrible place now and its a sign of the end time, i always say, when would you rather be alive, now, or in the 1700s ? Some things have got worse as a world and many things have improved. Thats my opinion anyway

The version you have is only a précis of the original.I used to avoid this place as a child because of its reputation but now i realise how bad things were for those who lived there. We should all be ashamed of the way they were ignored. People living only a couple of miles away never new or cared about thr plight of those living in this overpopulated and deprived part of Manchester, made all the worse because Manchester was otherwise such an affulent place at that time.
