Wow--20's gangs ran the gamut from ruthless to ridiculous--they might shoot ya for rattin' on them, or they might just steal and crush your unfashionable hat. This was awesome--thanks for another great upload @The1920sChannel!
Thanks for your channel, I enjoy your videos. I have a huge dollhouse that I made that is 4 feet wide and 4 feet tall, I have invested $50,000 into it since I started building it in 2008. The house itself is a very beautiful Queen Anne Victorian with a wraparound porch, an 8 sided 3 story tower and is the style that would have been built in 1897 or so. When it came down to decorating and furnishing the interiors I had a bit of a dilemma, whilst the Victorian era is my favorite for architecture and furnishings, it is not my favorite for the actual daily life of the people, especially the women. Gas lighting and coal for the stove and heating, must have been a very sooty Smokey place to live and the sheer drudgery of being a housewife during that period is extremely arduous. I did all my research on the day to day life of the Victorians and was very sad about what I learned. One story was about the constant attention that had to made to the cast iron stoves, keeping them burning through the day, using them to heat bath water and one particularly disturbing image was that of the cook that would test the heat temperature of the oven by opening it up and thrusting her arm inside. All I could think about was all those open flames and the women dressed in all those layers of fabric from head to toe. So I had to do some more research and come up with a solution. I had read a book called “One Summer 1927” which I just loved and is now my favorite year of the past, Babe Ruth, Charles Lindbergh, women’s right to vote, and oh so many new and exciting inventions. So I decided to stage my house as though you were looking into a 30 year old Victorian in 1927, and had been retrofitted with electricity and modern kitchen. I also dedicated the main bedroom as an Art Deco room. It’s not a child’s toy dollhouse to be certain, but merely my life’s worth of collecting miniatures all having a home, it’s of museum quality miniatures and no detail has been left out. So now I have the best of both worlds incorporating my Victorian items with my 20’s items is the perfect fit, the house does come complete with a Cadillac roadster which is actually from 1930 but I’m making an exception there. Well thanks for all your really fascinating content, you’re doing a great job.
I realized that its almost a 100 year old anniversary to the straw hat riot! I'm switching to boaters this May, I'm planning to wear it this entire year just to celebrate the anniversary
Ha! I love this history. I own a straw boater, it's my favourite for the hot summer days. If I were to think of an interesting story from the 1920's, I think it would have to be the very early PR representation of President Coolidge. Edward Bernays (the man who came up with slogans like "torches of victory" to sell cigarettes to women) had to prove to the American people that the president wasn't the "cold and taciturn" person he turned out to be by inviting a group of film stars to the White House for breakfast with him.
Straw hats are an awful lot better than people that wear their baseball hat backwards. Have they not figured out that the brim at the front of the hat is to protect their eyes from the sun?
I bet there is fun and/or educational material from the 1920s to last you through the 2020s! Oh, and your intro is one of the very few that I actually enjoy watching! It’s fun and unmistakable. Nice work!
"Boaters" and "Panamas" are two completely different styles of straw hat. They are polar opposites with regards to their materials, method of construction, and appearance. Such an inaccurate statement might provide a good gauge for the quality of the research that has gone into the videos on this channel.
I bet most men involved refused to wear a felt hat after this out of protest. My idle who refuses to change to felt hat is no other than monkey D. Luffy
ridiculous lol those newsies and lil gangster wanna-be's wreaked havoc! haha i'll salute these men the next time i choose to wear summer shorts and shirts in winter tee-hee
This channel is so underrated
I've been reading about the 20s for decades and never heard of this! Many thanks!

I love the history lessons you give us. I have always been fascinated by life before WWII. It was like another world, back then.
Well this was an interesting bit of history I didn't know about thanks for making this video also what's the new of the song playing in the background
Glad you enjoyed it! The song playing for most of the video is "Chicago (That Toddlin' Town)" by Ernest L. Stevens & His Dance Trio.
@@The1920sChannel Thanks
Not only did this group of people hate to see BP thrive and build their own cities. They also hated that you wore a hat or too long.
Was that how Abbot& Costellos routine Bagel street or Flugel street came about?
Lol good catch!
Did you say SUSQUEHANNA HAT COMPANY?!!!!
I'm wearing mine Christmas
Is this how oda came up with the straw hat idea hmmmm
Truly one of the best foreshadowing of all time

I like straw boater hats, I’ve seen some of our Sesame Street friends wear these hats on the vaudeville stage.
Were there no prisons? Were there no workhouses? Bah! Humbug!
Can we do this for flip-flops in December?
Not so smart going after dock workers.
It sound like that was the last straw.
I bet most men involved refused to wear a felt hat after this out of protest. My idle who refuses to change to felt hat is no other than monkey D. Luffy
Hey what’s the name of your intro song?
“Sweet Mama” by Duke Ellington
Scandalously unfashionable? Your hurting the farmers ego.
