DIANE Anja, I have been making hats using the basic process you have in this tutorial, however, after crocheting several rows and want to end, I find that I am on the row just above where I want to end. I can't properly end because to do the last slip stitch means making the slip stitch into the first stitch on the row below. I am new to crocheting and can't for the life of me figure out what I am doing wrong.???? Would appreciate your help if you have time.
Here in 2023 and it's the best explanation on the internet on how to do the increases in the round. THANK YOU. This is such a game changer. Cheers to the "scared stitch"
Ophelia I am 57 and have been crocheting and knitting for 52 of those years. You just demystified the whole process for me. 🙂 I especially appreciate your explanation of the first chain and the slip stitch forming the top of that last stitch. Thank you, thank you for cementing the process for me. ❤️
Ophelia I started a project in the round and was going nuts trying to keep my rounds flat while increasing. I even looked for videos to help those I saw were either fast or making no sense. I found yours and was very elated. Did I say I am 69 years old and have been crocheting since 8 yrs of age. In my 40's I picked up my hook again along with many projects. You are a FANTASTIC INSTRUCTOR. And your method isn't silly at all if that's what's working for you and it helps others. Thank you for demystifying increasing rounds and keeping the project flat.
I agree with MaryintheMaking!!! I started crocheting "circles" about 1 year ago. Every video I've watched had a different way of counting the stitches while making a flat circle, and none made sense to me. Your video made me feel like yelling "Hurray!" Thank you! 🤗
Hellosies, I know this is a few yrs old but I just watched this video & you wrote exactly what I was gonna say also, I've been crocheting for 40+ yrs & now I get it. 💖
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! I was wondering why my "circles" were coming out as a hexagon. You really cleared things up for me. I love your stories about the stitches which also REALLY HELPS me understand the why and the how for the increases. Also, I love your accent!
THANK YOU SO MUCH... I'm 74 and like MaryintheMaking below, I am grateful to have this "demystified". Your video is a blessing to crochet fans world-wide. BLESSINGS to you from Oregon.
Finally I understand how to increase! Been intimidated for years how to increase...I love the 'scared stitch' as it really explains how to increase! And it's not silly - it helped me!
Best explanation I've ever seen of anything crochet. I've been crocheting about a year and there's other concepts even that I didn't really understand until this video, like how the chains and slip stitch together make a complete stitch. These silly stories really stick in your brain, ill never forget all thiis now
It's 2024 and your easy to understand explanation is still helping people! I've never heard it explained that way before and it finally clicked in my brain after years of being confused about increases! Thank you so much for making this video!
This is the best magic ring and flat circle explanation and method I have ever seen. THANK YOU so much, I finally got how to do both and will always remember you 'scared stitch' trick. 💕💕💕
This is a definite game-changer! I’ve been crocheting for 56 years, and this is the first time I’ve felt completely confident in my rounds! Thank you soooo much!
So this is the video I picked. I’d love to enter even win the hook set. Congratulations on 60000. My on the 2+ yrs I’ve watched your channel has grown. cheers!
The scared new stitch idea and number of row equals the number of stitch where you multiply is a brilliant idea for someone with poor memory. Each time you said scared stitch, I couldn’t help but chuckle. Thank you lots.
I have been crocheting for nearly 30 years. The brain drain that could've been avoided over all these years if I had ONLY known, the last stitch was afraid and wanted to stay with the stitch before.. it's a wonderful story I can tell to all my fellow hookers.. THANK YOU!!!
Seriously! There has been multiple times I have tried to do a circle and always came up with the wrong number... you slammed dunked my issue. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Thank you so much, Anja, from sunny Trinidad! You are a natural born teacher. I will never forget this tip and I'm already imagining all the possibilities for flat circles - table runners, coasters, trivet, rugs, scrubbies.... Ahhh... the possibilities are endless!! Thanks again 😊
Thank you for this video on how to make a flat circle coaster! I love your tip in keepig track of how many stitches you are to suppose to do in each row by stating that the last stitch in a count is afraid so it wants to be in the same stitch as the previous stitch. It is so clever!
I get you, the way you think. I am a visual learner. I learn by instruction and hands on at the same time. I unable to learn by verbal means alone. I understand how you weave a story in order to remember. Thanks, I dont feel like I am alone in the way that I think! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for your video on the crochet flat circle. I love the way you explain the tools and counting the chain stitch in the start and end of the round. I have watched other videos, and yours is the best I've seen. Thank you for sharing.
I'm 22, I've just started crocheting again and I've already reviewed so many videos to understand how to increase past the second row, and you've laid it out comprehensively and quickly! Thank you so much for simply demonstrating what I have been struggling with for two days.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. Counting the first ch2 as the last stitch instead of the first makes all the difference. Your instructions do indeed make a perfectly flat circle with no seam. When making a hat, I've found that starting with 8 stitches (instead of 10) will cause the crown of the hat to gently curve down to where the straight sides begin.
I've watched a dozen beginner flat circle videos. Anja, this one is the best!! I will never forget. Thank you so much. This is when I wish my Dutch grandmother was here to teach me again. Crocheting brings back so many memories of her from childhood.
I started crocheting a month ago and wasn’t able to make ANYTHING because no tutorial would ever make sense to me. I would look at the comments in a tutorial and they would all basically say the same thing “This tutorial is the best one out there”. Only it wasn’t the best one because THIS one is!! You explain stuff so easily and I just finished my first ever circle that I will be using as a coaster. I am over the moon to finally find someone who explains everything in a way someone like me could understand. I’m now going to make 700 flat circles for my house :DD
What a great way to teach little ones how to crochet! The little story is cute. Also - thank you! After I don’t know how many years of trying to figure out how to do a magic circle, your tutorial is the only one that allowed me to - finally! - figure it out. Sounds silly, I know but, it was always elusive to me. So, again; thank you!
Thank you for this wonderful explanation on how to increase stitches. Been crazy the past few days because the method I have watched from other videos is not really helping me. Your method is not silly. It's really helpful. Thank you so much.
Hello Anya, I have only been crocheting for 5 months. And wished I had seen is in the very beginning! Would have saved me a lot of frogging. 😊 Thank you so much, your explanation was perfect and so easy to remember. Looking forward to watching all your teachings! Take Care.
I don't know how long I've been trying to crochet this watermelon rug now, and started over and over again and it kept bending... Thank you SO so much for giving a proper walkthrough! It's amazing, simple and a cute way to remember. I can now start again, hopefully for the last time, and do it right!! 😁😁
Your video changed my life. I was always reluctant to crochet circles because I didn't know where to slip stich the row together (so many instructions say in the top of the chain 2 and I would second guess myself) or where to put the first or last stitch. I would also get flustered trying to remember the increase pattern for each round. Your instructions are so clear and easy to remember. I love the repeat pattern rather than trying to memorize. Now I LIKE crocheting circles and do so with confidence! Thank you so much for sharing your technique and story!!
Anja, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!! I will never dread beanies ever again and not have that dreadful crooked line either! You are such a love. My Nanny and my Grandmother's help teach me to crochet. Also, our housekeeper, helped when my parents would go out of country. They had a dairy farm in Surrey. I loved it there. It just took a few days to get acclimated to the smell of silage. Whew! That is some smelly stuff! However, after a few days one couldn't smell it anymore. I do rattle on! I do appreciate you so much. I've been a subscriber forever and have always loved you. But this video will change my crochet life! You see, I have eight grandchildren and they love my beanies. I take them to pick out their yarn and then I whip up their little beanies, some not so little anymore.❤ Thank you dear one!
Oh, Anja, what an awesome memory tip for crocheting in the round. As you said, it may be a silly little thing, but who cares when it's greatly helping you to keep track? I'm all for tips and tricks for memory or crochet. I also noticed that with this process of chaining up 2 and then forgetting about it gives a much cleaner finish with no unsightly seam in the project. Thanks again, Anja, for your wonderful guidance.
yes, i kept doing this and making up the story in my head of the scared stitches, and one day i thought i have got to share this because it works!! also no seam visible indeed, added bonus !!! thanks for watching!! xxx
Anja, I have a tip for you in case you don't know of this one. It reminded me to share with you when you made your couch cushion with tassels and just kept forgetting. Did you know that if you steam your tassels, they will look very straight and pristine and just have a more professional look to them.
Your voice is very calming and I was smiling the entire time I made my circle, I am 14 years old and I’ve been crocheting since I was 12, magic circles used to be my biggest fear but now their super easy! Thank you!!
I’ve been doing amigurumi but I’ve never done a flat circle so thank you for this tutorial! I never thought to count my rows to figure out how many stitches to do with an increase! I love it!!
I spent 2 hours last night watching videos that didn't make any sense. Wake up on a beautiful Sunday morning and find you. This is hands down the BEST explanation of keeping the circle flat. THANK YOU!!!!
Ophelia, you are a superb tutor I've listened and watched many a crochet tutor, doing the Magic Circle on You Tube.. There seems to be many different ways to do the magic circle. But the way you perform doing this, in my book. Your "Simply The Best" as Tina wouid say. 👍👏💙👏💜👏👏👏
Hi from Australia. Your technique is a winner for sure. My daughter wanted 2 round 45cm doilies for tables in black and after many failed attempts of wavy doilies watched this video, was mesmerised and gave it a crack! Ended up using black cotton yarn 8 ply did 19 rows and a scalloped border. Looks fantastic and is totally flat. Daughter is so happy and I am thrilled with the outcome. Thank you for sharing this with all of us ‘pandemic’/lockdown’ crocheters.
Anja, you are the only tutorial maker I have found who does things the way I do. I never thought of thinking of the stitch as being scared but do like the anthropomorphism of considering the stitch as being scared.
I am a fairly accomplished beginning crocheter and I found this video a great way to remember how to crochet in the round! I won’t forget to take care of the scared stitch, that’s for sure! 😅
Thanks for watching this video, maybe these would be of interest to you TodoBakuDeku For Life? th-cam.com/play/PL4OqcRdj5PUU6CL4mlG5x6eGgjyl8xLLl.html Enjoy watching Anja 🌈😘🌈
Thank you for sharing how you use a “story” to remember the increase. Perhaps this type of self-talk will work on other concepts too. I’m sure I will always remember YOUR story though💖
This is THE video that taught me how to crochet a flat circle! Lol it really helped me out because the story you tell about the yarn really stuck in my head! So thank you! It's been years now since I watched it last but I always think of this video whenever I go to crochet a flat circle! I came back just so I could share my love and appreciation for this video with my new to crochet friends! ❤😊 Edit: found my comment!!! I watched this 4 years ago! 😂
I've been crocheting for over 10 years as a side hobby and never have i ever understood how to make circles as easily as i do now. Thanks for this easy to understand video. Watched it twice and can make awesome flat circles on my own now! Thanks again!
WOW!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! It's not that I'm getting old or anything (66) but, my memory seems to get shorter as I get older. This is a great way for me to remember how many stitches I need to increase to make a circle! Bless you!! Love Mimi
You are the only one who has been able to show me this in a way where I end up with a round instead of a hexagon. Thank you so much. Not even my mum who has crocheted for over 60 years could explain it like ypu. A million thanks . You have saved me from pulling my rounds out over and over, bewildered as you why it wasn’t working. Much respect
With your stitch is scared story, it's gone someway to help me learn how to increase, I want to make a round rug large enough for the sitting room but didn't know how to increase.. I do now. Thank you!
I'm new to crochet and this video of yours is the best yet!!!! I finally understand how and when to increase. My daughter wants me to make her a flat circle elephant head with ears and truck holding sunflowers and this really helped me get started. She wants it about two or three feet wide. Thank you so much.
Thank you soo much for the tip........I always get problem in making the flat circle ..............now m sure ur tip will help me alot......thanks again
What a wonderful way u explained I have seen many videos but I'm unable to complete my circul but now your story is my rockstar your superb thanku so much
There are no words to describe how thankful i am for this tutorial! Im a teen and i started crotechting 2 months ago so im a beginner. For the past week or so ive been struggling to make flat, even circles. This tutorial helped so much, thank you! ❤
I feel the same way as Sheryl! Thank you so much for this tutorial and funny but helpful explanation. It makes sense of something that use to be confusing to me. You are a great teacher. 😁🙂
Thank you! 😊 Don't forget Katja Wöll I do a live video on Sundays at 20.30 GMT, be there for live interaction with me! Thank you for watching and keep crocheting! Anja xxx
I started crocheting 2 months ago and been struggling in doing a flat circle as I am confused with increasing. But now, I am confident in doing increases. I love how you explained it and I love the stories of each row, it helped me to remember. "Scared stitch" for the win! 🎉
I am 63 yrs old and have been crocheting since I was a little girl. You easily taught me a knew way. I love your scared story. Yours is the best tutorial by far! Thank you so much. Its perfect!
OH MY GOODNESS! Thank you SO MUCH! This has really helped me to learn how to crochet a flat circle for my projects! 10/10 tutorial and best teacher! ty for teaching us all the amazing scared stitch! :D
I have battled with wavy circles for years. This is the best and easiest way to prevent the waves and keep count of stitches and rows. I can’t thank you enough.
I would like to thank you for sharing you method for making a flat circle crochet pattern. I have been making round pot holders to keep myself sane during this pandemic. It has been a form of meditation for me. I have a lot of happy friends and family who are enjoying my pot holders. However, I never counted when I increased in the rows and always just eye balled it when I needed to increase to make it flat. This method is so much better than my haphazard way of increasing stitches. I loved your explanation of the “scared double crochet” this makes it very easy to remember. Thank you for being such a great teacher!
I will never get that out of my head now, four is scared so in with three. Its like 7 ate 9 joke, thanks Anja that cheered me up i have a cold at the moment so this is a pick-me-up when i am ill😃
I love this way of remembering! I have watched many tutorials and this is a really good one. Would it be OK if I reference it in a basket tutorial I am making? I like to refer my viewers (all 30 or so of them!) to good tutorials when I find them. Thanks and see you at the live Sunday! -Wippy Chick : )
I hope this video will help you with crocheting a flat circle with no seam. Thank you for watching, Anja xx
Such an awesome explanation to remember how many to increase with each row! Thank you so much!!
It is not silly at all , it is very helpful tips and explained very well. Thanks a lot for your effort 👍👍
@Hiba Riyas she's used to it , she doesn't need to do it slowly
By far the clearest explanation and demonstration I’ve seen on TH-cam. Thank you!
DIANE

The scared new stitch idea and number of row equals the number of stitch where you multiply is a brilliant idea for someone with poor memory. Each time you said scared stitch, I couldn’t help but chuckle. Thank you lots.
Hi, thank you for watching my video, I'm so glad it's helping you remember the system, happy crocheting, Anja x
Just a memory. This was the original TH-cam video that got me hooked on Anja. Forever happy!
Awwww, thanks Nancy, Anja x
I’m absolutely amazed how I understood your teachings in SECONDS - vs the last 5 hours I’ve spent on soooo many other platforms
Thank you for posting!!! 🥰

aaahh! yes, I was just waiting for them to 'straighten out' but that will speed it up and look nicer!! Thanks!! xxx
Another good thing other than no seam is that the circle is staying round - no strange corners like in some circle patterns!
Hello there Cindy, do you use this sc for amigurumis toys?
'Scared stich'. Soo sweet, and easy to remember. Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful! Anja x
THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!! THANK YOU!!!!! I CAN MAKE A CIRCLE FINALLY ‼️ I LOVE YOUR LITTLE STORY IT REALLY WORKS😁🌷🌷🌷

Glad it worked out so well for you. Take care and stay safe.
I lovvvvveeeee your stories and explanation. Thank you for taking the time to do this
Thank you Charissa, I find it's easier to remember, Anja x
Anja, you are the only tutorial maker I have found who does things the way I do. I never thought of thinking of the stitch as being scared but do like the anthropomorphism of considering the stitch as being scared.
Thanks for watching my video Wandas Way and keep crocheting. Anja xxx💕🌈💕
What a nice story about the scared stitch.you made it easy to follow.thank you.x
Glad it was helpful! Anja x
I was struggling regarding increase is every rows.. Watched two days many videos but finally got the trick. thank you💜💜💜

Thanks for your great tip. What a great way to remember the increase number by aligning it with the row number.

Thank you for sharing how you use a “story” to remember the increase. Perhaps this type of self-talk will work on other concepts too. I’m sure I will always remember YOUR story though💖
Oh my goodness. This is the best! Thank you for your adorable story that I'll never forget.
So glad you found it helpful Barbara, Anja x

Thank you, I have always got in a muddle with this technique but not anymore. X
WOW!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! It's not that I'm getting old or anything (66) but, my memory seems to get shorter as I get older. This is a great way for me to remember how many stitches I need to increase to make a circle! Bless you!! Love Mimi
You are a good teacher. Thank-you.
Best perfect circle story I've heard, I'm actually going to remember the pattern this time haha, thank you!
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching Craftin' Me ! Anja xxx 💕🌈

Ibabsolutley love that the first chains become the last stitch in the circle. The joint moves around and finishes off beautifully!! ❤

I'm new to crochet and this video of yours is the best yet!!!! I finally understand how and when to increase. My daughter wants me to make her a flat circle elephant head with ears and truck holding sunflowers and this really helped me get started. She wants it about two or three feet wide. Thank you so much.

Ikr😂 sameeee
LOL. 😂 Thanks for watching my video Lindyloo37 and keep crocheting. Anja xxx💕🌈💕
On the other hand, if you ARE making a hat, start with 8 stitches (instead of 10), and it will curve correctly until you begin the straight sides.

I have battled with wavy circles for years. This is the best and easiest way to prevent the waves and keep count of stitches and rows. I can’t thank you enough.
Thanks for watching my video Connie Robertson and keep crocheting. Anja xxx💕🌈💕
That is the most awesome and easy explaination ever! Thank you!
Thank you. Glad it was so helpful for you. Thank you for watching Gail ! Anja xxx 💕🌈

Please do! Thank you for watching Wippy Chick ! Anja xxx 💕🌈
