I Rolled A Customer's Rig

  • A customer contacted us about coming out onto Hells Revenge to help him get his SXS off the trail. He said he had broke it on Hells Gate Obstacle and just couldn't make it out over the last couple steep climbs. So we ran in to help him out. I thought we would be pulling him up the hills only so I didn't take my trailer(insert ominous foreshadowing). Once there he said he only had 1 wheel drive, and the front end was broken and he wasn't sure what was broke. So he asked if I could carry it out. I agreed even though I don't like carrying the narrow Sxs's out like that. I figured it would be fine. We got to a steep fine covered in Sand. As we were descending the SXS slid to the side and panicking the customer stayed on the brakes allowing it to slid further (not his fault, this is all a different kind of thing people aren't used to, and the responsibility falls solely on me). It fell fairly softly into the sand. So we unhooked and flipped it back over as quick as we could. We continued carrying it out to the parking g lot and got them out. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

If Mike or Shawn are in the Can-Am, that doesn't happen. Part way through the vid, I was saying to myself, "That dude is riding the brakes way hard" .

First thought is that Trail Mater is a beast and Rory has confidently and competently trained that beast. When you're working with someone who's not part of your team, the unexpected can happen--it takes some time working together as a team to learn to think alike and apply past experience in tandem. Lessons were learned and everyone survived to enjoy another day. Honestly it kind of looked like Paul towing Ben at the Off Road Wrecker Games for a moment. It's always entertaining and educational to watch your videos. Thanks!

I ran it back over and over. I think I saw skid marks, but I was convinced the driver locked it up when the wheel in the air was not turning as he went over. Also, for leaving the muttered "shit" in the edit I'm impressed with the new guy; I'm hoping it was on purpose, he's a genius or an idiot. 999 times out of 1,000 towing like that would have been a non issue. You might be better off with rigid cross links or non-customer brakeman.

It only takes a moment for things to go sideways. Even a crew as experienced as Rory and Mike have issues at times. The part that impressed me the most was how the situation was handled afterward. Check the driver then take care of the situation, no panic, no rushing around and making the situation worse. Just cool, smooth operators.
I should have mentioned this during the wrecker games, but Rory and team put on a masters class of off-road recovery. They may not have been as entertaining (destructive), but they did an excellent job of traversing the trail with a vehicle in tow.

I can relate to the bruised ego. Drove into the wrong side of a puddle today in my service truck, went bad instantly. Bent rim, flat tire, broken bumper parts and something definitely bent in steering as wheel is 90° out now. But what can you do? Own it, put spare tire & wheel on & make appointment @ alignment shop, finish workday and carry on. No profit today but tomorrow is another day. Thanks for keeping the videos real. Can't wait for next one.

What's life if not a learning experience. Even for the best of us, there's always that "I should have" when you least expect it. Great thing about Rory is that you get to laugh with him and you get to cringe. It's real.

Beautiful shots today, really got a good cameraman there. Love the stretch he’s giving to the wheel shots and underside. 😊

I agree with Davebenson, if someone with more experience were in the other rig it may not have tipped. Glad you didn't make a bigger deal out of it than it really was. A rig tipped, no one got hurt, you tipped it back up and kept going. Thanks for the video.

Thanks from England + I thought it was odd the way the SXS slid (I watched the clip before reading your comments), until I replayed that part of the clip and saw the rear wheels fully locked up. If a pair of rear wheels are fully locked or fully spinning that will always bring the back end around. Any doubters put a wide rubber elastic band over the rear wheels of a toy car and pull it from the front to see what happens.

Dear Rory, as much we try to reach perfection in something usually comes the silly thing happening reverse. Somehow there should be a balance in everything; as nature all the time is showing us. It's never about how you fall is about how you get up! I think together with a lot of people watching your videos we embrace the same thoughts: you are doing a great job all the time! This is just a small example you are humans on earth and not extraterrestrials :) and on the other hand is good that the driver was fine, the rig has no damage. All the best guys!
