- Join the “Eye of the Needle” hike at the Grand Canyon for a 21-mile transformative journey. Traverse the Bright Angel, River, and South Kaibab Trails, cross historic bridges, and immerse yourself in the natural wonder of the canyon. An adventure for the bold and the brave.
This 21-mile trek that mirrors the grandeur of a rim-to-rim hike via the Kaibab Trail, but with its unique twist. Starting from the South Rim, descend the Bright Angel Trail, where every switchback brings a new perspective of the Grand Canyon’s vastness. Connect with the River Trail, where the mighty Colorado River carves its way through ancient stone, and cross the iconic Black Bridge and Silver Bridge. Ascend the South Kaibab Trail, a path less traveled that offers solitude and sweeping views. This hike is not just a physical challenge; it’s a pilgrimage through time, revealing the Earth’s secrets with every step. Prepare for an unforgettable adventure from rim to river and back, an epic quest that promises to test your limits and reward your spirit.
The eye of the needle hike takes Bright Angel Trail to Pipe Creek Beach, then River Trail to South Kaibab Trail, crossing Black Bridge into the Phantom Ranch area, then circling back via Silver Bridge with a return on River Trail and Bright Angel Trail is the exact same distance as rim to rim on South and North Kaibab Trail. This hike can serve as a substitute for a rim to rim hike for those with limited time or who do not want to arrange transportation back from North Rim. It can also serve as a training or confidence building hike in advance of a rim to rim hike, or simply as a beautiful but susbtantial hike in its own right.
Great video, my wife and I ran into you coming up to the top of The Devils Corkscrew, said hello and thanked you for your videos. You even had time to give us some words of encouragement and guidance on the trail. We are both 65, and thanks to the great advise on your videos we had a great hike. We went down and up Bright Angel Trail, camped at campground , had steak dinner and breakfast at Phantom Ranch. What a great hike that was, we would like to do it again. Thank you and keep up the great work.
I remember you both well! Thanks for your kind words. We are the same age! It is very gratifying to me that the information I post is helpful to others. I very much appreciate your comment.
Your videos about the Grand Canyon as an experienced hiker and expert are always great. Located in a beautiful environment, they can serve as an excellent documentary and as a source of information for all those who want to visit the park.
Thanks so much, you are so kind!
What a great idea. I love it. You have given me a chance to hike rim to rim without needing other people's support. I like that. I always wanted to do it, but I wasn't sure how to complete it without other people to help me. This video is so wonderful. Thank you for sharing and you have done an excellent job explaining it to us.
Thanks for watching, I am pleased the information was helpful.
Thank you.
Cool hike, and useful alternative.
Thank you.
Wonderful hiking trails ❤ thanks for sharing the information about the hiking shoes and other knowledge ❤🎉 have a great week 💕
Thanks so much for watching. I have been away for a week and I am finally getting back to what I ignored!
Seems like an efficient way to achieve the same distance as a room to rim hike. Good idea.
Thanks!
10 thank you so much for sharing your knowledge

I have never thought about it until I watched your video. What a wonderful idea. I am very grateful to you for sharing this wonderful information. Thank you and good job 👍
Glad it was helpful!
What a wonderful video this is. I like your idea of hiking. It sounds great to me. Thank you so much.
Glad you enjoyed it!
That view of the battleship was incredible! I am hoping the snakes will be sleeping in Oct.😉 Slow and steady wins the race.
Unfortunately, I think the snakes will still be out in the deep canyon in October, but they are rare to come upon. I agree with you about slow and steady, at least we get out there! I hope you have a great hike!
오늘도 좋은 말씀 감사합니다. 참 멋진 곳입니다.
Thanks for watching!
This is a wonderful idea. I like that. Thank you for letting us know about it. Great work.
Thanks for watching!
I was thinking about the same thing the other day when one of my friends told me he wanted to hike rim to rim, then I told him maybe we both can do your eye of the needle hike. I can't believe you actually did it. I very much enjoyed your video and thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise. I love your video and good job, GC hiker.

Thanks so much, let me know what you choose and how it goes for you! I appreciate your watching.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Great video, thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching.
You are an inspiration!
Thanks so much!
Great idea. I love how you did it. This is exactly what I should be doing last year, but I wasn't thinking clearly and ended up doing south to north and failed miserablely. I wish I watched your video before I did that. Thank you for sharing and I appreciate your video and great work.👍
I am sorry you had a bad experience, but hopefully you will go back again. The other alternative hike is the "cowboy loop," which could give you the opportunity to take a bus or taxi for the last five miles, something you can't do on the rim to rim. Hopefully, I will make a video on that alternative hike soon. I appreciate your comment.
That looks like a challenging hike, but an interesting one. I will give it some thought.
I hope you find it useful!
The same mileage as a rim-to-rim hike, much of the same scenery, and you're back in your room at the end of the night, seems like a clever solution to me.
I see it that way more and more.
Hi GC 👋 I like this route! It's beautiful, and it seems more doable as an alternative to rim to rim. Sorry about the injuries, I think no matter the issue, it is always good to find a new normal rather than be upset at things one may no longer be able to do. I have had some bugs issues with my downhill being slower the last few years. The downhill is really hard on my already angry knees 😅 I am always nervous about encountering a dangerous snake on trail, nit sure how I would react to that.
Your footage of the canyon on this trek was gorgeous as always 😊 It is great that you have such a love for the Grand Canyon!
Hi NPP! I share your issues about going downhill more slowly, but at least we are still getting out there. The interesting thing for me when encountering a snake is the reaction is completely instinctive, there is no thinking involved. Luckily, snakes like to avoid us as much as we like to avoid them. I am back in town and still trying to catch-up, I will be by your channel soon!
@RationalTalk I messed up my good knee on a hike on Tuesday. I did something I knew I should not have done. I did some light jogging on a couple portions of a trail to make up some time. Even with a knee brace on, it definitely will need a couple of weeks to heal. 😔 😟
Great to see another way to hike rim to rim. I saw you asked about loading up on water at the stations. For me personally, I'd rather drink water out of a hydration pack slowly as I hike for these longer type hikes instead of trying to consume a bunch at once.
Thanks for watching and thanks for the thoughts about "tanking up." I really do not find any benefit in it, but it also kind of make sense. My rule has always been to drink when you are thirsty, but I always like to learn something new as well.
Some pretty great hiking in the Grand Canyon for sure. Any problems with filming? I've been hearing conflicting stories that parks both in the US and Can are requiring permits. Indeed, would never tire of all the amazing variety! Awesome!!
Thank you. This is all filmed on an old iphone which gets no attention. I think my channel would need to be a lot more popular to come to the attention of the Park Service. I think the rule is that you need a permit to film for profit, but I believe my videos are for information and entertainment, so the bottom line is I have had no problem. Plus, if they challenged me, I think I would take the issue to court because I think the rule should be overturned.
@@RationalTalk Feel the same way!!
The pink rattlesnake looks like a rock. Obviously, if you get bitten here, you'll be in big trouble😮
Yes, the anti-venom costs $50K plus USD!
@@RationalTalk Wow!
😊
Thank you for watching!
