    Best bass tone ever

    I am a huge huge fan of him and ANTHRAX, , he is a HUGE influence, and yes he cuts thru the mix easy --- his tone has bigger emphasis on hi mids, that is a combination of his gear, the Precision-style or PJ setup he prefers (with EMG pickups most of his career), and of course his technique. I didn't know he was a fingerstyle player for years, but he wallops the strings hard like an angry typewriter, and amazingly he is always on point with it, no idea how he does it.. but I always thought he was a pick player because his sound is so aggressive and consistent in its dynamics.
    Comparing him to David Ellefson (another MASTER), totally different guys - Anthrax had a looser style, and a bigger hardcore-punk emphasis to their music, that is actually one thing that makes "east coast" thrash different from the California bands who have a more "tight" style of playing (Metallica, Megadeth, Exodus, Testament etc). This doesn't mean Frank Bello lacks precision, he absolutely has it, they just play this way because that is their style. Charlie Benante, the drummer, is similar, he can "Go loose" but he is very tight and controlled when the situation calls for it. Scott Ian also, a very controlled and consistent rhythm guitarist when it's time to lock in.
    Look into DD Verni of OVERKILL also, similar sound and a great pick player, they're kind of like Anthrax.

    I always thought that Bello was super underrated as a bassist, his playing style is great and Got the Time is one of my favourite Anthrax songs. I also know that this is sort of unrelated but the other thing that set Anthrax apart from the other Big 4 was that they were the only band to have a sole vocalist in the band with Joey Belladonna whereas the other dude had one of the instrumentalists sing like in the case of James Hetfield, Dave Mustaine and Tom Araya

    • @iamgribs
      @iamgribs ปีที่แล้ว +3

      He also was a really competent singer, the other bands' guys weren't great singers in the traditional sense, not to say they were bad at what they did, that's just them doing what is right for the band. Belladonna however really could sing his ass off. "Armed and Dangerous" "Indians" "I am The Law" "Be All End All" etc

      @@iamgribs He's still got his pipes, too, btw. Saw him perform recently with one of his side projects, and at 62, he's still really good.

      Bello is a beast! Super underrated. Belladonna is the best singer of the big four, no doubt. Anthrax is my favourite band.

    Part of his bass tone around the time of Among the Living was that he was using Marshall bass amps...yes, Marshall. It's right in the liner notes. 20+ years ago (circa 2000), I talked to a rep that said they were still making them at that time and all they made cabinet-wise (then) were 4×12" speaker cabs, and he readily admitted they were super rare to find in the wild and generally hard to come by. I have no idea about the heads. So, you might also want to try that speaker setup. I've apporoximted that tone and changed it to fit myself with a GK rig. Still want a 4×12 cab eventually. For now, 2 4×10rbh and a 1001rb head will do.

    Nice video Paul! Here's a request, can you do some bass habits videos on the following bassists? Rick Savage of Def Leppard, Ross Valory of Journey, and Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead.

    • @SO-ym3zs
      @SO-ym3zs ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Valory is underappreciated. Not flashy (thank goodness) but tasteful and melodic, and he definitely knows how to serve the song, and I dig his tone. Savage's stuff is mostly very simple and unobtrusive, but he's part of one of the greatest hard rock bands ever and also knows how to step back and serve the song.
