  • I WILL NOT BE SELLING PARTS FROM THIS TRUCK. Sucker even runs and drives! Wasn't planning on buying another parts truck but the price was right and I have a bad habit of saving everything from the crusher that I can. Really need to find that bigger piece of property...

      A guy I worked with loved them too. He also loved to go out west hunting. And every year he would spend a ton of money and time keeping his on the road. He spent HOURS working on the 4 X 4 he had. And FINALLY he bought a new Chev 4 X 4 for what at that time was a ton of money. He figured he finally had it made. The transmission went out half way to his destination. Yep, what wonderful trucks. What a crock of shit. Big heavy tubs that were dead before they reached 100K. And the Fords and Chrysler products were no better. Ahhhh, the good old days. What bullshit.

    My boss bought one of these brand new in Australia. It had a 273 six cylinder engine. When that finally died they fitted a 253 Holden V8 to it. They had some problems when he first got it. It was a long wheelbase and fitted with a Tipper body. Unfortunately, while she would do 100mph, she wouldnt pull the skin off a rice pudding! They changed gearboxes and diffs, and while she pulled great, she did around 5mpg! The Holden was Australias Chev. She was a 1973 and replaced a 1950 L series Inter. I would love that truck now!

    I had three of the beautiful old GM trucks, two were Chevrolet and the other was a GMC,..and I bought and installed those Fisher Snow Plow systems on them. What great plow they were too.
    Best feature of those snow plows was that tripping cutting edge.This series of trucks was the best, in my opinion.
    Man, you've brought back good memories of my 'fun' snow plowing and off-road running days!

    If you plan on keeping the big hub dana Id suggest swapping out the lockouts. I had the same style on my 70 and they were a bear to turn. The old plastic gets real brittle to and crack easily. As for why it is so rotted, they were all like that till about 77-78. It had something to do with the metallurgy in the sheet metal. I have only seen one really clean 73 and it happened to be a forestry rig. Was a regular cab, long box, step side truck. Really cool.

    • @5Tractorguy
      @5Tractorguy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll keep that in mind, aside from sitting I bet the plastic on those lockouts swelled and jammed them up. I'd like to find a 67-72 that needs an engine and trans or a pre 1980 K5 and build another truck from these parts. Your not the first guy to tell me that... I remember hearing that from someone else about the makeup of the steel was pretty crappy at the time. Luckily the '77 made it this long...

    • @hansgruber6455
      @hansgruber6455 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The Heavy Duty Dana 44 Spicer hubs used on GM 3/4 ton 4x4's from 1970 through early 77 model years are an excellent lockout hub.....IF people are familiar with them. Unlike new made lockout hubs, these have all STEEL internals............not aluminum alloy pot metal like newer hubs have. The problem with the old Spicer HD44 hubs is when people grease the piss out of them and then come WINTER TIME..............the knobs barely turn.....because the grease is frozen.......so guys use a pair of pliers to try and turn the plastic knobs.....thus cracking and or breaking them.......usually they break on the backside where the cross pin goes through at. I've owned and drove 67-91 4x4's for 27 years, and owned both a 73 and 76 K20 with the HD44 front axle with big Spicer hubs, never had an issue with mine.

    From what I see, and for what you paid for it, if I had the thing, I'd stick a plow on it, and pay it off doing some jobs! Also the rear ends on this trucks were 10 bolts, 12 Bolts, Corp 14 bolt semi float (81 and newer I believe, on 3/4 tons), Corp 14 bolt full float for all 80 and older 3/4 tons, and all Single rear wheel 1 tons. And dually 1 tons had Dana 70HDs. Some of these may be a little off, but I can assure you this truck has a 14 bolt full float
