I was Lymstone Commando back in 1978 for about a year. I understand that the guard now announces welcome to Hell for anyone getting off.
I love your reactions to beautiful places. So many people take them for granted. ❤
Voyagers are my 2nd favourite train
Exton, PA, USA absolutely sucks…I’m sad that it’s named after this lovely place.
Don’t go to Euxton in Lancashire by mistake, not quite as picturesque.
I bet!
There's something so weirdly comforting about standing near a reasonably-sized body of water, isn't there? There's probably some funky scientific reason I don't know. This is a lovely line - thanks for sharing it with us, and congrats on the chips ;)
I used to be a student at Exeter Uni, every week in June once exams were done I'd get a train about 7pm down to Exmouth, walk along the cycle route which is about 3 miles alongside the line up to Exton where I'd have a drink at the Puffing Billy pub and then wait at about 9:45 for the 10pm train on the platform watching the sun set over the River Exe. Very happy memories and defo worth a visit over the Summer
Sounds so nice!
Another awesome branch with cool stations! Yall have such an amazing network in the UK! The operators might be rough but the network is amazing!
We holidayed near Exmouth last year, and on the last day, we caught the train one stop to Lympstone Vllage, going down to the water and having a pint at the Swan Inn, lovely little place!
Used the whole line a fair bit over the holiday, one of my favs, tbh!
I was very much in love... once out of the Exeter suburbs at least!
Devon is really nice and Exton is superb, enjoyed the little mini series Jen of the Avocet Line
Back in the late 70s My dad was having a weekend down in Devon doing loco moves and staying at a B&B in Lympstone Village. Late one evening after having several pints in a pub he got the train back and a little worse for wear got off at Lympstone Commando. He soon sobered up when several soldiers with guns ran up to him and kept watch over him until the next train came along and made sure he got on board. He never made that mistake again 😂
Back in the late 70's our fathers would have been real males striking down this agenda.
There's also a very pleasant pub very close to Exton station as there is at Lympstone Village plus one of our favourite pubs in the country, The Bridge Inn a few minutes walk from Topsham station.
Theres a real charm with these rural-ish and rural Devon and Cornwall lines, i think its the single track nature of them, as well as the use of Class 150s and 165 on this line as well.
How camp are the people you need to have business with?
We moved down to Devon from Banbury back in 2017. We are very lucky to live here.
Jen: Devon is nice, Devon is nice. Class 150: let me fix that for you
In the next mini series there's a different train that comes along to ruin it for me!
You were lucky to visit when on high tide as it looks very different when the tide is out
aw jen your videos always bring a smile to my face thankyou dear
Nice pub at Exton, it was called the Puffin Billy
HI Jen are you a railway Modeller or just enjoy spotting😍
I enjoy adventures!
"Don't bother coming here unless you're doing it for completeness" love that haha
Its a lovely, under rated line, for my money better than Liskeard Looe (although that's lovely too), so glad you enjoyed it too.
the Exmouth line is def a lovely line to ride & i wouldnt mind going down there one day to ride it & Exmouth beach looks amazing & the view from Exton looks amazing too brilliant vlog
Do it! It's worth it!
Great vlog Jen. I remember riding down this line to Exmouth when I was younger when on holiday in Devon!
This viee on the mainline from exeter to totnes are lovely as well there are lovely views in totnes. Im born and bread in devon you would never get me moving anywhere else. There are still loads of places i havent been too. I ever get to dartmoor the is a long standing joke that every road there leads to widecoombe in the moor.
Very nice view at Exton of a not so nice train in the distance
And fish & chips are always the ideal way to end the day
I've set a precident on the fish and chips haven't I? 🤣
I used it .. ( but I got away with it , Heh - Heh ! ) .... happy days ............... DAVE™🛑
Just subscribed your great on railway commentary keep it up
Last train not just any 150 but an old liveried first great western 150
Times have changed. When I cycled along the route from Topsham to Exmouth the gate was locked. I've since visited it briefly on a stopping service sll for about 5 seconds. The ferry across to Starcross is well worth the journey.
Odd that, a separate station for the Royal Marine Commandos. It is only half a mile from Exton. Surely commandos could easily quick march that tiny distance.
I got on at commando are we allowed to get on at it?
National rail website still advertise Lympstone commando as only for use by the base
Brilliant video Jen, Devon indeed is beautiful, I guess I'll have to actually spend time down those parts sometime. :)
Do it!
I used to study at Exeter Uni and I have a soft spot for the Avocet line. I remember there's a nice fish and chip shop in Exmouth that do battered chips, which was well worth the journey down if the views aren't good enough for you. Exton looks very nice, never got off there but Dawlish Warren and Dawlish on the mainline are very nice, Starcross is quite nice with the view and platform between the railway and the estuary but the station itself isn't too nice architecturally.
Exeter - Paignton is the next series from Monday 😉
Who is 'they'? Specifically.
Is this the only station named after a dress code?
Lympstone looks pretty nice.
When I was at uni at Exeter, we often went on this line (as traffic between Exeter and exmouth was awful!) I always remember exton station as a platform that just seemed to serve a bungalow!
If you were looking at the bungalow you were on the wrong side of the train 😉
Good timing with the high tide. Glad you got your water fix, both seaside and estuarial.
Lympstone commando is a military base bad lads army was filmed there was private until the footpath was built
If your going to comment get your facts right. Bad Lads Army was filmed at a base in Hampshire. The Royal Marines are part of the Royal Navy not the British Army.
Voyagers on a voyage
9:27 chippieeeeeees
7:59 Because who doesn't love fish and chips by the seaside?
Fish and chips by the sea, what could be better, why a @jenonthemove vlog of course! I always hunt out chip shops that still fry in dripping, the best chips ever!! tfs, blessed day.
Very interesting to see a small railway station that is used by the Military. Not all railway stations are served by the Army. But it’s quite a nice place to visit.
you need to visit every station on the east coast mainline and wait till you get to Welwyn north and the viaduct
One day!
I wonder why no one can’t use that station unless you are in the Army. Does the Army look after the station.
It's a standard GWR/Network Rail station
Ah maybe that’s why. Thanks.
Hi Jen, like you I like both Devon and Cornwall. Glad you found a Fush n Chip shop, made me feel quite peckish...certainly some nice views across the water, defo a happy peaceful place to be. Thanks for sharing...🙂
Longcross on the Reading - Waterloo line had distinct "you don't need to be here" vibes but wasn't signposted as such. That was MoD until recently.
i love the class 150 ,and 153 .. these were used on the Birmingham Walsall ,Rtv locals until electrification , i loved them in Cornwall on the St Ives line .thanks for all the interesting videos that you present .
Very good video greetings from Ireland
The clock tower right on the water’s edge in Lympstone is rented out as a quirky holiday home by the Landmark Trust.
you and I are a bit kindred spirit in the love of water, particularly salt water. I would be hard pressed to live far from salt water. At home, on certain days I can smell when the tide is out. My personal fave. UK station on / near water is St Bees. Great building and lovely village.
After you alight the train, you have to jump over the fence , if successful you get the role in the army. If not, press help point for assistance
Great video Jen I enjoy these adventures 😊
Spent a few Summers at Exmouth, never by train though
Jen, which is worse, a Voyager or a 150?
Ohhhh I'm torn!
of course Jen's nightmare would be some sort of Frankentrain including the worst aspects of the 150 and 220
@@MercenaryPen I'd say voyager is worse cuz my nan got bit by a dog on one of those
@@MercenaryPenThose FGW IETs Are Worse
What a view at the end! I suppose as so many of the stations are on branch lines there's not much chance of gwr using excuses.
I think that you will also like Llangollen, Llanberis and Bala
Excellent video Jen enjoyed watching this one.
If no one else has done a knickers joke yet consider it done
irrelevant but why donyou hate voyagers?
They're noisy, overcrowded and stink!
@@JenOnTheMove oh
@@mudchute4dlrthey're also slower than a snail.
@@RichardWatt they're also diesel so expected but sure
Jen how would you rank 165 800 150 and 125
Do the Royal Marines not have vehicles
I'm now craving chips 😂
Great video as always.
We're in an infinite loop here... your comment has made me crave chips again now too!
Scenery looks lovely.
Being a native of this part of the world I'm really delighted to see you enjoying yourself so much here. Oddly, it all seems ordinary to me but it's good to be reminded that it isn't.
You do have to try extra hard to see the beauty in places you're already very familiar with. I'm the same with the Peak District to be fair!
Brilliant video.
Enjoyable video as usual Jen! I have a feeling that there are some stations whose the only purpose of getting off or on a train there is to tick it off your visiting every station list
We'd never build half of these stations today, but if they're already there then they are so basic there's not a lot of harm in keeping them open!
Thanks Jen , love the content of all your videos ,keep up the good work.
Thank you 🙂
When jen sees a mainline, a Voyager Emerges Along Said Mainline to ruin Jens day
I have to ride one in the next series!
@@JenOnTheMoveme: wants to give Jen a hug.
I don't like Voyagers either.
i love how you get out and explore every station!
I made the decision that if I am going to do every station in the country, I'm going to give each one attention - even if it does mean that the project will take a decade!
If you did this a few years ago wonder how you would have got to Weymouth Quay train station - I think you would have loved it due to it location and how the train got to the station
I've been there in my younger days! When I head back to Weymouth it'll be another trip down memory lane
@@JenOnTheMove from my understanding the station no more and they lifted the track - not sure if they left any in the road
Fish and chips with cutlery! That’s posh.
Cameras and greasy fingers aren't a great mix 🤣
@@JenOnTheMoveGood point! I’ll let you off then!😊
When U come to Barnstaple let me know can I show U the old lines around Barnstaple Devon and the old station
Let me know when U coming to Barnstaple give me day notice
