Banks Of The Lee | The Longest Johns

- This is one of the saddest folk songs we've ever heard and we fell in love with it immediately. It tells the story of a couple deeply in love, but forced apart by work and circumstance. Whilst they are separated, one of them dies tragically.

^^^ mood.
why does JD get more comments directed at him then anyone else lmao, Seriously these are my jams
@@robertcampbell7997 It's because he's such a deep bass! Between this and the JDSquatch in the Rufford Park Poachers video, his voice and those long, sustained notes are so recognisable!
When two lovers meet down beside the green bower
When two lovers meet down beneath the green tree
When Mary, fond Mary, declared to her lover
"You have stolen my poor heart from the Banks of the Lee"
I loved her very dearly, so truly and sincerely
There was no one in this wide world I loved better than she
Every bush, and every bower, every wild Irish flower
Reminds me of my Mary, on the banks of the Lee.
"Well, don't stay out late, love, on the moorlands, my Mary
Well, don't stay out late, love, on the moorlands from me"
How little was our notion when we parted on the ocean
That we were forever parted from the Banks of the Lee
I loved her very dearly, so truly and sincerely
There was no one in this wide world I loved better than she
Every bush, and every bower, every wild Irish flower
Reminds me of my Mary, on the banks of the Lee.
I will pluck my love some roses, some blooming Irish roses
I will pluck my love some roses, the fairest that ever grew
And I'll lay them on the grave of my own true lovely Mary
In that cold and silent churchyard where she sleeps 'neath the dew
I loved her very dearly, so truly and sincerely
There was no one in this wide world I loved better than she
Every bush, and every bower, every wild Irish flower
Reminds me of my Mary, on the banks of the Lee.
(Here’s the lyrics of the song if anyone is interested. Great song guys! Keep it up. I love this one so much!)
Joshua Belfield thank you very much I am going to sing this for my choir teacher and you have made this process much faster and easier
doctorminigun no problem man. I’m planning to sing this song with some buddies of mine so it helps us too!
Man I wanna sing with you guys too!!!
Bad news my choir teacher didn’t like it
@@doctorminigun lol who cares be a rebel! Or a pirate and give um no quarter.
Haunting...mystical...perhaps even adequate.
forgot that I'm on an american VPN and I was still enjoying the last notes and the forest scenery when they hit me with a 200% volume star spangled banner in the ad. _SIGN THE CARD TO THANK OUR TROOPS_ lmao
I sang this song as a Bard in a game of D&D, and I couldn't finish it without crying. Everyone loved it. I changed the word "Irish" to "Elven" to fit the world.
I'm 99% sure our DM is gonna make my Bard kill off her love interest at the end of our weekly, 2 year campaign, so I'm working up some lyrics to this to do the same. Yeah I'm gonna cry.
@@bridgetorpg9313 that's pretty cringe ngl
I sang this song at a miners camp on shift change and everyone was quiet. I didn't cry but some of them did.... its an incredible song
@@OxTheHerdzz So what if you don't agree with the notion. To each their own and let's let everyone enjoy what they will.
@@jamesschreiner3956 Sounds like something a cringelord would say
I know I've already left a comment, but I felt like another comment was due to give true appreciation of this song. It is so peaceful, sorrowful, and tender all at the same time. The harmony you all have together is stupendous. It gives the song a very lament-full tone to the song. Even the small things like the water trickle and the humming while the melody is being sung add so much to this song that makes it beautiful to hear. To listen to this gives me so much inspiration creatively and I am so glad you all worked on this.
Salty tears of pirates fill the sea
No rules agains multiple comments! It helps the algorithm
Currently crying in a Starbucks waiting for a school interview. Thanks for the tear-eyes lads, if I don't get in I blame you
Good luck!
Good luck!
How did it go?
Hope it went well! :)
@@thelongestjohns I feel like it did, I'm really hopeful. I managed to dry off my face and shape up before we started. Thanks for the well wishes all!!!
Respect to JD for that super-low note at the end of the chorus!
I love this song, not just because it sounds nice but because it tells a lesser told story. It tells of a man going abroad for work or war, and coming back to find his love deceased; This is great because there are so many songs about the man dying and never coming back and it feels so fresh.
Most underrated longest John’s song
Love the poignant imagery of fungus (re-life? Decay? Immortality?) when you sing about giving her roses
What do you mean I'm crying? I'm not cr... Oh damn, you're right, I am...
I seem to also be leaking water from my ocular duct... how very strange. Ok, yes I'm crying, shut up lol
A new Longest Johns video?
Excuse me while I put my entire life on hold for four minutes and forty-five seconds, this is important.
This is most certainly ADEQUATE!
Lalablue • it's better then that
@@ryleywhitehead1703 It is Adequate!
Random Coffee Shop Jesus it's the simple fact that it reminds me of home, where I used to sing and laugh, but my family taken away. This is the little release I get just little songs and things like this can mean a lot for a man like me.
CatchDemCats Adequate means great on this channel, it's a stream thing so that's what I meant :)
Lalablue • sorry my mind goes to places
Just casually slipping out a bass-y B1(?)....- Gorgeous tune! Amazing arrangement!
Yes, it is a B
Those aren't tears. My eyes are just sweating.
I love Andy’s voice and of course all the beautiful harmonies
Can’t wait for the new album. And a very adequate song 10/10 would adequate again. Anyway there’s quite a few songs I hope to see in the album. Bonnie ship the diamond, this one, parting glass, Polly on the shore, chicken on a raft, Sam Hall. looking forward to it regardless 👍🏼
My Marie did not die, she only destroyed my heart. So did this song, it hit home. Absolutely beautiful and captivating. Great work, I'm gonna go cry now 😭 lol.
I can't imagine how hard this would be singing at double speed. Incredible job!
Triple speed for this one :)
@@thelongestjohns Wow... very impressive!
@@KingJellyfishII adequate
@@thelongestjohns my question has been answered, that's how you did it
I've been wondering why it looks like they are singing in slow motion XD
That this song has the fewest plays (on Spotify) of all the songs on the album is a travesty. I keep coming back to this song, and find myself singing it, to myself or aloud, at work as the evening draws on. Thanks again for introducing me to this beautiful song.
Hell, this has even fewer views than the video-free album version! What is wrong with everyone? XD
The comment section of TLJ videos are treasure troves. I think I just “liked” a couple dozen posts from two years ago. But they’re so true, this is a work of art more than a music video. It’s also a damn fine tune to accompany letting oneself have a good cry.
This brings a tear to the eye of even John Paul Jones (who was indeed a pirate). Great performance guys I am going to sing this for my choir teacher to see if the boys can sing this for our concert
Let's hope it goes well
Did you do it?
@@McSeal yes. He did not like it. Sadly. Maybe I could do it for the talent show.
@@doctorminigun did he say why he didn’t like it?
@@individuality4422 it was because we couldn’t find sheet music. And I think it just wasn’t really his style.
OH HELL YEAH.
A D E Q U A T E
Probably the most depressing song on this channel so far. Exactly what I need right before my first A-level exams
Love it
Already? That's early in the year!
Good luck
@@anthonybracuti6898 haha thanks man xd
oh good luck!! did you get your results yet?
How did it go?
@@fhpurcell5364 thank you two for your consideration hahaha
I finished my a-levels with mostly good grades and am now studying my subject of choice abroad :D
Sweet jesus that B1 at 2:49 was one of the best I've heard.
My best friend killed himself the day after this came out it’s still my favorite song from you guys I listen to it often. Thankyou so much longest johns
guys, I wish you all to never lose your loved ones, your family, your friends
Wow what a voice you don't hear group's harmonizing anymore with is sad
I don´t know from which world these sounds come from. Respect. 😄😃😃
Currently sitting alongside the River Lee here in Ireland listening to this. Beautiful song!
I'd say this is one of your most emotionally powerful videos. A beautiful location and with such amazing harmonies. This adequately warms the cockles of heart. Well done lads!
Another powerful one is fire and flame
Dearly love this song. Someday I hope to sing it as well as Andy.
One of my new favorites from you guys, right up there with Fire and Flames. All I will say is that I can imagine how odd it might have felt to sing this somber tune at almost twice the speed for recording, given the matched lip movements compared to the slowed water throughout. Nevertheless, regardless of whatever silliness night have been felt, truely a lovely rendition of this song. Thank you!
These vocals make me cry. I don't know why. It's almost angelic. Perfect.
I don’t know much about how music portrays emotions other than what my ears tell me, but this 3:33 that’s what death sounds like. Listening to this gives me pretty much the same onslaught of emotions as actually hearing news of a loved ones death. Ya nailed it.
As a basso profundo, this is definitely one of my favorite songs to cover
One of the most adequate songs of all...
WAIT WHY DOES THIS ONLY HAVE 98K VIEWS
I saw this on Spotify, at first I avoided it until I actually gave it a listen. One of my favorites now
Apart from a song, that touches the deepest part of my soul, I love how you guys composed the shot with Andy in orange jacket to make him stand out as the lead voice here. Beautiful work!
This was sorrowful and wonderful, bittersweet and haunting. The harmony you all have together when singing is nothing short of beautiful in every song. Thank you all, so much, for the work you do in keeping folk and shanties alive.
that bass is incredible :D
The cinematography is amazing!
Just when I thought I was past my depression for the day 😓
If I could like this video more than once, I absolutely would. I love this version
Dang this is depressing but really good
The slow motion cant be appreciated enough. The timing is impeccable, it so well done.
Such a sad song, but beautifully filmed & sung. Well done all of you. Another triumph. x
That's the thing about Irish music, lads. If it's not a Drinking Song, it's a "Depress-Ya-To-Drinking" Song.
I LOVE that this was shot at a higher tempo / frame rate and slowed down to get that dreamy effect. really compliments this song
This will always be my favorite band
I've searched for most versions of banks of the lee and none come close compared to you. Granted, they range from 11 - 6 years ago
This is the first time I actually paid attention to the lyrics, and it gave me the chills...
Once again meeting my very high expectations! Keep up the amazing work!

The atmosphere of this was amazing. Great job, guys!
Such a beautiful song related to the river of my home county Cork :) Positively adequate
Absolutely outstanding. Some may even say it was adequate!
Pure Adequacy as always!
Just got out of work and this was an awesome surprise. Time to fall asleep to your lovely voices :) hope I can come see you guys perform some day!
Very nice !
Everytime i listen to this song it reminds me of my step mom who passed from a over prescription by her doctor. Beautiful song guys, love your work
I'm a big fan of your work lads and this is just so hauntingly beautiful I can't describe it
Jolly good lads, jolly good.
Favourite band ever. Love your work so much guys! It's been great seeing your production quality slowly improve to where it is today, truly ADEQUATE.
Damn you, work for not letting me get home sooner to listen to this great song and this great band. Amazing job once again, and my hype for the album has grown even more. Sad that June is still a couple months away.
Finally this has its own video its been one of my favorites from the stream :D
I STILL LIKE TO LISTEN TO THIS FINE ACAPELLO VERSION OF THIS SONG !!!!!
Haunting harmonies indeed.
You find the most beautiful places to record, this is perfect
Holy carp! So beautifully performed.
The location looks so picturesque, holy moly! The singing, though, it's great, Amazing, perhaps even... ADEQUATE?
It's a terrible day for rain...
Whooo... I've had a really hectic day, but this was wonderful. I feel like y'all reset my vibes and now I can breathe properly. Thanks so much you guys, it's beautiful
I have been waiting for this song for so long ! Beautiful singing and video clip ❤️
like heaven to my ears 💎
I was just finishing homework at about 2 AM and then I listened to this. Dear lord, and I thought Shallow Brown was sad
Gentlemen
PLEASE add this one to your Amazon listings. Awe my heart ❤️! 🥰
Watch out for our new album coming June ;)
This is gorgeous 💕💕💕 so excited for the new album!!!
I can relate to this song so much and the way you guys did it is just beautiful. It's so emotive and I can picture every scene clearly, i feel the emotions as they slowly descend from love to tragic love/mourning , the melody is like a girl (I'm a guy so however it is for you) is playing with your hair making sure you are ok, the bass and undertone is like a cat purring as you stroke it or give it affection, the whole song is so tragically beautiful and it brings tears to the heart
Beautiful.
God this is beautiful you guys inspired me and a couple of my buddies to start singing shanties!!
Great song, can you please do loch lomond?
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS....I've been waitng!!!
Oooooooo, yeeeaaaahhh. Amazing thank you
HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY TO YOU LONGEST JOHNS !!!!!! THANKS FOR THE FINE VERSION OF THE BANKS OF THE LEE !!!! THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST I HAVE HEARD AND YOU DO A GREAT HONOR TO THIS SONG !!!!!! GOD BLESS YOU AND STAY SAFE !!!!! MICHAEL
great recording. cant wait to hear the sped up version in the behind the scenes
Beautiful and haunting. Love it.
Great job on the video, Abi :)
Sounds superb, chaps.
On spotify when? This too good to confined to TH-cam!
New album in June... may well be on there ;)
The dislikes are those that don't like crying
Thank you.
This song is stunningly beautiful, and the harmonies you guys use really capture the sadness of the words. That coupled with the sounds of rain in the background makes for a truly lovely sound.
Right in the feels
Damm guys. You guys dont just create videos, you guys create freaking masterpieces. The background/location was amazing and so peacefull. Then andy, you taking the lead, great great job. And the melodic notes to acompany the lead were just freaking amazing. Oh by the way andy i'm growing my beard and hair out just like you i like that look. Great job guys and may your ship of succes meet higher waves of succes and sail for eternity and beyond. Major respect
Beautiful Version! Greetings from Germany!
I just want to put some of you guy's songs to a dramatic fight scene with two wounded lads deep in a dark forest.
