Assembly & Flight Review - AeroFoam MB-339 105mm EDF Jet

  • Here's my full review of the AeroFoam MB-339 105mm EDF Jet from ‪@bananahobby‬. This is a good looking and well made airframe that flies quite nicely. Being a high powered EDF, you do need to be cognizant of your timer, but otherwise it's a fun jet to fly. Note that there are a few things to be aware of in the assembly which I cover. Also, BH provides JPHobby brakes with the kit, and so I talk through that as well. #MB339 #RCJet #flight

    Chris. Looking good my friend. Jets that size need a real turbine. But the EDF version is really nice. I just wish the lipo technology could be improved to get a little more flight time. Not just for this jet but for the others too. Just when it starts to get real fun you have to land and swap out the energy source. lol. Great flying you did there. Smooth operator. 👍👍👋😊

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s hard to beat turbines for flight time. That said, I have edfs getting over 5 minutes of mixed flying. However, these are the jets I’ve build with extremely clean inlet systems. There’s a lot of drag in this one that’s not helping. Plus, a more efficient fan would help as well.

  • @Eugensdiet
    @Eugensdiet ปีที่แล้ว

    As always you did a great job reviewing the model. I wish you were my neighbor. Problems I see with the model is as follows - Incomplete cockpit an no pilot. When you spend 1300 bucks for a plane I would not expect to see exposed servos and pushrods like you would see on a cheep foamy. If I had one of these I think my club members would be jealous. As it is I'm jealous of them with their digital FPV from the cockpit EDF jets. Love them.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  ปีที่แล้ว

      I hear you. Unfortunately the best way to get hidden control linkages is to build your own airframe as most arfs these days, even the very expensive ones, have exposed linkages. I’m speaking in generalities of course, but this is generally the case these days.

    • @Eugensdiet
      @Eugensdiet ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Thercgeek There aren't that many companies competing for business. I think one of them will do one of two things. One being surface finish and detail and the other eliminating exposed servos. This one the surface looks pretty decent. Nothing looks worse to me than an exposed servo in a vertical fin. Yikes!

    Loved the wing cam and the assembly montage! I imagine a lot of camera work went into that. I've heard a lot of complaints about the viper being a bad airframe for edfs. The inlets aren't large enough for edfs and are better suited for turbines. Have you noticed that with this airframe or the viper?

    • @aerospacematt9147
      @aerospacematt9147 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Viper has relatively larger intakes than the MB-339. The Horizon Hobby Vipers (70 and 90mm) both don’t have Cheater Vents, but this one does, it needs them, because the inlets are so small

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @cool5tuff the Viper jet is a great candidate for edf. The mdb339 is more challenging since the inlets are so small. That’s mitigated here through the aux air vents which is functional, but not ideal. The model flies really sweet though!

    Hey Chris how’s things......thanx for all the great videos.
    What are your thoughts on this Standard Remote ID that they want to enforce in 6 weeks time.Many feel that this is going to destroy our hobby and that it means the end of BNF & PNF models.
    What are your thoughts on this.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, I’m not aware of something impending in 6weeks time, but frankly I don’t see how they could possibly enforce any of that right now and I don’t even think the technology is even there yet. Maybe for the drones themselves, but not for recreational airplanes. Ultimately, what will keep this hobby going will the FRIA’s. Those are designated areas for recreational flying only which are essentially all of the local clubs that are already in existence and under the umbrella of the ama.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a nice looking and good flying jet. I’m honestly not sure regarding the spare parts. It appears that banana hobby has a good selection of spare parts. Looks like the model is on sale at the moment which is a pretty good price for the model. It’s complete and the components are good, and they include jp hobby brakes with it. It does take a bit of work to get together, but nothing too insurmountable.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The x45 would be a great, light weight choice for this model. That’s a really impressive engine. Excellent thrust at an extremely small size.

    • @jamesvaliensi7706
      @jamesvaliensi7706 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Thercgeek Do you think the air intakes are even needed? The hole in the bottom of the fuselage is big enough for a X45. I may try blocking off the wing intakes and see what happens. It would be less drag during flight.

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If it were me, for the turbine install, I’d look at closing up all of the external air grates and just pull air in from the intakes only. That would be the most ideal IMO to reduce the drag. Use the inlets for their intended purpose and close up all the extra holes, haha

    • @Thercgeek
      @Thercgeek  ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly, that is a loaded question. If you’re looking for the fastest airframe, it’s going to end up being a purpose built composite jet because the foam designs aren’t designed very efficiently. That being said, I think the fastest foam edf I’ve flown to date is the eflite 90mm viper jet.
