I grew up in the very rural SW AZ Superstitions. Took many a jeep ride looking for Native American smelting and clay firing ovens. Never found them but it's allegedly a good place to start when looking for old Indian gold mines.

the mine in this tale near the Verde river is in sycamore canyon and has been found but not talked about, also there are 3 mining places in that area.

here is the thing there is not really any mine shafts between skeleton canyon and Animas from here it is another 30-40 miles to shakespeare as the ox team came up lame and coming throught Animas would have been the shortest route to shakespeare and coming up from the valley to Animas is a fair grade might be where they faltered

It may not have been a shaft. A prospect pit could have been 20 feet deep and may have been considered or called a shaft.
If ya ever watch ask Jeff Williams his channel shows tons of old prospect pits and some being fairly deep.
