    I'm glad these companies are moving back to thinner stock. I don't need everything to double as a crowbar.

    • @WutangPham
      @WutangPham ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I completely agree, “survival” influences knives with quarter inch stock with convex edges and low saber or scandi grinds. Makes a “knife” that’s good at batoning, but it sucks at being a knife.

      For real!

    • @edanpino-xt1ph
      @edanpino-xt1ph ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’ve always preferred moderately thick stock, maybe .150-.180”, with a full flat or a high saber grind. I like things to be a bit overbuilt because I’m paranoid about my #1 tool being damaged or destroyed

    • @MrBoomie00
      @MrBoomie00 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@edanpino-xt1ph I feel ya. But I prefer full flat or high sabers as well. But if had to go with one option, I'd still prefer 0.125-0.15p0 in CPM3V or a high Rockwell Magnacut. Just got a SurviveKnives GSO 4.5 Bushcraft in that's 0.115 in 3V and I'm in love.

      I wouldn’t be, and only because I hate a blade length of less than 5”. I don’t know why, I just feel like anything shorter is too little for me. I’ve used plenty of 4.5” and under blades, but they don’t do as much as a 5” can do

    Thanks for this, Aaron. As a competitive option, I submit for your consideration, the Ruike Hornet. Similarly skeletonized, slim handle, classic, beautiful drop point, better sheath system, thicker, but very efficient 14C28N blade.

  • @realbroggo
    @realbroggo ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Never used these blades but I do have and use a couple of Ruike F815 Hornet blades which are very similar in size and style. I have been very surprised by the size and style - easy to carry and very nimble to use. I've been surprised with how many hiking & camp tasks that they get done. I'll just say don't be put off by the size and give one a go. Sharp blades all.

      Nice - good steel too 14C28N at only $50. Thanks for the tip.

    Another strong video. I agree with your summation that SOG seems to be continuing to move in the right direction and keep their brand fresh with new concepts and new Steels. A bit late to the game on these two introductions as I picked up a Buck 630GRS PakLite and really enjoy it as a pocket EDC. It rotates along with an Izula and Candiru, but they are both 1095 so my PakLite always wins the day on rainy or humid weather days.

    Great review Aaron. I still haven’t seen one that beats my Izula s35vn. Made in USA. Smaller and more versatile. Maybe not something I’d want to go on a 5 day hike with, but certainly an edc perfection for fixed blade. I’m always in the market for others tho! God bless

    I have to disagree about the buck paklite update. I have the caper and find that the shape and finishing on the handle makes it extremely comfortable and ergonomic in use and the weird little micro scale thing actually works great for variou grips. I've done a mountain of "paring knife" type food prep with and used it as an EDC fixed blade for a couple of months and never felt like the handle was uncomfortable or had strange hot spots. The variety of new skeletonized options is nice and it's good seeing different approaches to it, as you'll never get a single best option with these kinds of knives, but my experience with a moderate term use test was pretty dang good with the buck line.

    Thanks for the info. I like the thin blades. I also have the MKC Speedgoat. It's my go-to fly fishing knife that I attach to my waders. Another knife I would compare, although heavier, is the Benchmade Happy Canyon Hunter. However, I will check these knives out. I'm always looking for another knife to include in my rotation.

    I wish SOG would remember it's roots. This new stuff is all right but how about a 7 inch Pilar and an upgrade to the Seal Team and other tactical knives. There's more than just camping.

    I like those but I'm not a fan of the price. The whole clip system being so complex looking makes me feel like I'm overpaying for the R&D on that rather than just a nice well-made little knife from Taiwan. And that makes it doubly unfortunate that the screw mounts for the clip can be manually moved like you showed.
    Nice to see they did a good job on heat treat though, that counts for a lot.

    G'day Aaron, ok, light weight, svelte, (good for concealment), and height to width ratio does come into the equation, however ........ they look to be slimmer handled than the vast majority of my folders.
    Certainly cant complain about the steel choices, though SOG, IMO, is another that need to be more competitive across every facet of a knife/sheath package.
    Re; "skeletonised" yeah if you must, though to be honest, I'd rather see it internal, ..... i.e not see it at all, ; ) surely full, and a bit beefier scales, wont add too much weight and provide a better experience ergonomically and cleaning wise .......... and furthermore ..... It's bad enough with spydy holes, and various slots, ........... now we've got finely perforated blades ........ and stainless or not, ... I need a good stiff drink ... immediately ; )
    Btw; Joker continues to nail it, if I were looking for such a compact fixy, I'd be jumping on that one.
    Cheers Duke.
