As someone who has lived on a volcanic island, Dewey's original disregard for the dangers of a lava field are more incredible to me than the survival story itself. For those of you who might not be familiar with this type of terrain: it's basically like walking on a sea of broken glass.
These "i shouldn't be alive" episodes that am watching in a row now, are each one so well documented with the right actors and the right scenes plus a real story with the survivor's talking at the same time that i feel they deserve an award for each one of the episodes. I wonder why i didn't see any of these actors in other movies. They act so well that you almost forget about how the real survivor-survivors look like and you get drawn into the actors.
3 hours from your car. It's midnight. 6 hours and the sun comes up. It totally AMAZES me how people never think the sensible option. Chill here for a few hours and pretty soon I'll be able to see. I'll see the track and the chances of breaking my legs is far less.
He seems the nicest guy 😢. Things can go wrong so quickly. Whoever told him to go at night should have warned him how dangerous the terraon can be. So glad he made it out. And I bet he never goes anywhere without water. Bless the kid who saw him.

Even just a big a** arrow, pointing to where you are. Takes less energy to make a large, visible arrow. I was thinking the same thing when I watched the dude that got lost in western Australia trying to find gold, too. He also saw multiple planes and they actually were searching for him so putting anything recognizably man made, large enough to see from the air, raises chances of being found by a huge amount.
I went out on a very short hike about 10 years ago, it was supposed to last about 45 minutes. it turned out to last about 2 hours, and really drained me. I was rehabbing, and half the time used a four wheeled walker with a seat! The ladies retreat I was attending talked me into going on this "easy hike"--which turned out to be very challenging for me. I hydrated well the day before, and that day before I left. Making sure I drank 16 ounces of water before I left for the hike. Then I took 16.9 ounces of water with me on the hike in my back pack, along with a first aide kit, small blanket and flashlight and fire starting kit--just in case--since we were starting out after 2pm. WE did not get back to the lodge until after 4:30pm easy, and I was totally exhausted and out of water. I wished I had taken about 3 bottles of water. My legs cramped and I had had to sit down and rest for 45 minutes before continuing the hike. I felt pretty foolish. I have NEVER done that again! I stick to city sidewalks and areas that can accommodate my walker, and I always have about 64 ounces of water with me in my large insulated thermos--with ice. I carry another bottle of water just in case. I would rather bring home water than run out. Lesson learned.
I'm sorry you went through that 😔 😕 People are so incredibly judgemental on here......don't feel foolish because you didn't know. I hope you're doing well

Well the dark in places like that is complete. Going out without supplies and then walking in the dark was bad, but its easy for even the experienced to become lost in the wilderness. Growing up in the wild we were taught ways to avoid getting lost, but also ways to hold out if/when we do get lost sense it was so easy to have happen.
Me as the tourist in the helicopter: “oh look, there’s a man camping in the volcano.” lol. Seriously, I’ve been binge watching these episodes over the weekend and it warms my heart the moment they are rescued.
Im loving this channel! The stories are top tier, its all very well done, narration is great, reenactments are great. Thank you for your efforts! I appreciate them alot 😊
I prefer the episodes where there’s a fairly unpredictable accident & someone uses their intelligence & sheer will to live in order to survive. Like the guy who got trapped under his quad - came prepared but couldn’t reach supplies, lost his leg but still survived through mental toughness & skinning beavers for warmth.
This is such a departure from the previous episode where a couple climbed a mountain, then it was freezing cold and storming, but they had a survival tent, a cell phone and were well prepared. This poor fellow was hiking across a lava field with a camcorder and flashlight ... completely unprepared. Luckily, the Big Island is only 93 miles wide at it's worst. He could have figured out what direction is north simply using a stick and the it's shadow.
Wow i nearly didn't see him in the tourists video, he was pretty camouflaged.. note to self, always wear something bright 🌞 he might have been saved sooner if he'd had something brighter on. Ijs

I go to my local cornerstore with more things than Dewey brought to his solo excursions to a LIVE volcano. Not judging, just saying 😂😂. May we all learn. And spelling out HELP with the leaves against the black ground would have been a great idea too. Happy he made it!
Unable to escape the lava field, Dewey constructs a hut by his oasis and lives there the rest of his days. Eventually he is discovered by locals but decides to stay in his beloved lava oasis, constructing an auxiliary hut that he rents out on VRBO.
“Instead he clamps it with his hand, and hopes the bleeding will stop.” Whilst wearing a t shirt, doesn’t even think to tear a strip off. This shows about the extent of Dewey’s intellect. lol.
I would have make a text sign from the green plants : S.O.S … can not understand why somebody is not that creative in a situation like this … you have to be creative for saving your own life..
I thought that too-idea from other survival movies. Sometimes when I m watching these videos I stop and ask myself “If this was me what would I do?” I rescue myself every time. Lol😂
If you get lost or the sun is down and your not able to tell what direction your headed stay put (if your not in immediate danger, like next to a lava flow or something)
Wow...I think if he knew what side of the volcano he approached from his car, i.e. north, south, east west, he could find his way out by looking at the direction of the sun...visiting a volcano at night and without water, phone, etc, is insane
Oh a thing you can do if you end up lost with a clearing or with a green patch in a wasteland you can use things like leaves from the trees to message your there out in the open so you can stay in the shelter easier
I sure hope none of yall making fun, criticizing, casting judgment etc teach your children to act like you....also hope your not in the medical field in any fashion.....should you or ur loved ones Ever make a mistake and do something fool hearty. I hope yall remember your empathy and compassion....
Why is it that 90% of these stories, the chopper always misses the person the first time around. It’s beginning to feel like a little bit of Hollywood embellishment to make the story more exciting.
I'm glad he made it and unfortunate another example of well-intended people going out for a short excursion and they don't tell anyone where they are going or when they will be back. Plus it was unfamiliar, very dangerous rough terrain and at night with no compass and walking three hrs in then trying to find your way back would be utterly impossible. And also no provisions or water?
On dual survival I learned that u find the middle of mirror n scratch out a line horizontal preferably so u can look through the glass n aim ur reflection onto what ur trying signal
@ambidextrousshooter6463 Signaling mirrors are included in miltary survival kits. They come with built-in "aiming system" which is basically just a see through area at their center because if they're aimed correctly, they can definetely be effective at getting the attention of low flying aircraft...especially if the aircraft is already looking for survivors. It's a lot better than no signaling device. And he was specifically talking about the guy in this video who already had a mirror...not someone magically pulling a mirror out of their ass.
Sure, Dewey made some bad decisions that got him into that situation, but that doesn't mean he deserved what happened to him. We all make mistakes and make bad decisions in our life, but that doesn't mean we're stupid or bad people
This was maybe one or two mistakes that were understandable for one who isnt experienced with this sort of thing. Being a person who is extremely experienced with this sort of thing, this seems like close to somethinf i could have done myself in the beginning of my outdoor life. This stuff is strange for those who grew up in the city
I’m sorry, this is the first one of these episodes that I laughed a little bit, because my friends and I had a similar yet way lesser experience as that in the same area. We’re all from Hawaii, I was born on O’ahu and I was visiting friends again on big island but I was 17 and had never seen the lava yet. So four of us went out at at around 10 pm after the security guard is gone so we could park and walk closer to the flow. We parked down a long desolate road like he described, parked and walked out onto the hardened lava fields toward the light of the eruption in the far distance. It was a spewing eruption leaping high into the air and falling into the ocean creating lots of smoke. It was beautiful and we got as close as we could so that we didn’t get sprayed or anything. It was a safe distance. And then we saw more glowing lava lights in distance in another direction, so we walked all the way there where the lava took its other form as slow moving molten lava flowing out of the earth making streams. Kinda like shown in this doc. So so cool to get up close to that too. When we decided to go home, it was probably 1 or 2 in the morning idk. But because we walked straight to the first spot and then went in another direction, we then could not tell where we parked. We could not see the line of trees and the road we parked next to. Just vast lava fields. We walked for hours. At one point, I looked down because I heard crunching beneath my feet, and I could see little glowing dots beneath the surface. I knew we had to walk so carefully with each step to not fall through. At one point one of my friends didn’t want to move from it. He said he was going to stay in that spot and wait. I laughed and was just like come on man, we godda keep going. We walked on that rough broken glass like lava fields of rocks all night until morning when we could finally see the tree line. It was dangerous and long night for sure, but at least we had water for the first few hours, and 3 out of 4 of us grew up in Hawaii and have very strong feet and are just more rugged than the average individual. It was the one mainland guy that was having a hard time who needed a lot of encouragement. All in all, it was a really fun adventure and a good memory for me. Biggest lesson I tell everyone coming to Hawaii, is BRING WATER. If you are going on ANY hike, even if you think it’s an hour or two hike, BRING WATER. Tourists make that mistake all the time. Really not smart. It’s hot and humid here, you sweat a lot. You NEED water. Glad this guy made it out safe. Hawaii is no joke. It’s not some carefree paradise where nothing bad can happen on your dream vacation. Respect the land. 🙏🏽 Aloha
Everytime i watch one of these episodes i end up finding myself drinking a lot of water to compensate for that one day that I'll be dumb and stupid just like the guys on these episodes always forgetting or not having enough water and they end up dehydrated
I think there must be already have happened many other situations around the world that could inspire new episodes... for example, in Brazil a guy was taken by a wave and have spent five days in a island; in Hawaii a woman got lost for 17 days... these all could be very good episodes.
I'd like to know exactly where he went? Kilauea? Puu Oo? End of chain of Craters road where the lava hits the sea? Sounds like the latter. It's nowhere near an "active vent". That would be Pu'u O'o miles uphill. I've hiked there many times in the dark. You can't possibly get lost there. All you have to do is stay between the pali and the sea. If it's too dark and your flashlight fails, just sit and wait for daylight.😊😊
Dude is lucky that the people on the helicopter knew he needed help instead of just leaving considering he was sitting down and waving as though he was just waving hi.
I'm sorry, but I can't feel sorry for these people who risk their lives for a stupid misadventure!!!!, I would have never had done this incredible dangerous thing!!!!.
I visited that volcano when I went to the big island years ago but I did it the safe way and went with a tour bus and walked over the barn lava, stuff trying to go alone you needed someone who knew the land.
I’ve been to that area to see the volcano. There’s an observatory that looks over the volcano field. I would think the monitors would detect people out there. Then again, it is an incredible amount of land so the observatory may not cover everything.
Dewey is a person who makes stupid choices because they feel they know it all, people know you always bring water that is a given. Take your cellphone, you never know a signal can be had . When he couldn’t find his vehicle he should have stopped.
*Lava is delicious & nutritious, because it has plenty of nutrients & minerals in it, therefore you must drink the lava &, or eat the lava for your body to become stronger & healthier.*
Let's do some basic math together... since 1 day equals 24 hours, we know that 2 days equals 48 hours (2x24) and 3 days equals 72 hours (3x24). So you see, if you've been lost for 77 hours, that's 3 days and 5 hours... not 5 days. Again, this is called basic math.
Seems like a nice guy. If your in a bad situation this is the temperament you need, used coping mechanisms really well. Obviously poorly prepared with mistakes but the temperament was spot on for a survivalist

I would have make a text sign from the green plants : S.O.S …
can not understand why somebody is not that creative in a situation like this … you have to be creative for saving your own life..
Now I know not to hike at a active volcano was actually considering it especially at night
I used to live on the slopes of Kilauea never at night lol
You won't need any water either. Just your camera 📷
Omg! 😱 me too!! No water necessary or compass !
Right bc there's glass everywhere. You watch too many movies. But maybe I'm wrong and maybe you're a fucking wizard 😂
The mirror thing doesn't work it never does and never will. No a mirror won't help you anywhere for shit 9 times out of 10.
@@UhideNcryWhileIseek Did you watch the video? He had a mirror.
Him and the woman who got lost in the grand canyon for 30 days would make a good couple 😃
Kids can be heroes too.
The boy is a hero. Yay, happy ending!
Sure, Dewey made some bad decisions that got him into that situation, but that doesn't mean he deserved what happened to him. We all make mistakes and make bad decisions in our life, but that doesn't mean we're stupid or bad people
It kinda does... I mean if you do stupid things, you are, in fact, stupid.
Yes his not that bad its a lil bet stupid 😁
Stupid is as stupid does😂
@@CS-uc2oh"Stupid is as stupid does"
This was maybe one or two mistakes that were understandable for one who isnt experienced with this sort of thing. Being a person who is extremely experienced with this sort of thing, this seems like close to somethinf i could have done myself in the beginning of my outdoor life. This stuff is strange for those who grew up in the city
guy: "Thanks so much, you saved my life!"
kid: "it's cool" 😂
🙏🏽 Aloha
From about 10 pm to 6 am , we were out there about 8 hours.
Lack of survival skills can kill you quickly! Dewey is lucky!
I wouldn’t go exploring a volcano at night ever, even with a guide.
Everytime i watch one of these episodes i end up finding myself drinking a lot of water to compensate for that one day that I'll be dumb and stupid just like the guys on these episodes always forgetting or not having enough water and they end up dehydrated
I think there must be already have happened many other situations around the world that could inspire new episodes... for example, in Brazil a guy was taken by a wave and have spent five days in a island; in Hawaii a woman got lost for 17 days... these all could be very good episodes.
or the guy in Indiana that rolled his pickup off the highway & ended up spending 5-6 days until 2 fisherman found him still trapped in his truck
Very Realistically made documentary my hand was shivering
Not a mobile phone in sight, only a man enjoying the moment
Enjoyment? Lol it was short lived but ok.
Divorcing this dude is the best thing the ex-wife ever did. Thats all I have to say.
🤣🤣🤣
Why so cruel
@@Lucy-mf5gkoh Lucy, lighten up, babe. Are you going to be on every "mean/cruel" comment?
the fact they show actual footage breaks my heart
Man! This guy has absolutely no sense of direction and should not be outdoors alone for sure 😢
Dewey builds a raft to sail across the lava in the search of help
Iam on the edge of my seat unbelievable
This guy is literally Jerry from Rick n Morty.
Who knew Jimmy Fallon was such a good actor
Haha. I thought he looked like him too.
What are those pants hes wearing 😅 are they long shorts or short longs 😂😂😂
Baggy man capris?😂
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂3 quarter shorts
I dont even walk into target without a water bottle. This man goes to hike a volcano without one.
Mom will likely use this story as evidence in a custody hearing.
You know it. They'll use any bs "evidence" they can.
Callous. Cold. Unsympathetic. What comes around, goes around.
Dude is lucky that the people on the helicopter knew he needed help instead of just leaving considering he was sitting down and waving as though he was just waving hi.
Glad you made it, Dewey.
No wonder the mother of the kids wasn’t happy with him taking them on a trip, he’s irresponsible af.
How could someone go to a volcano to take a video and not bring water even if that someone thinks the trek will only take a few hours is beyond me.
“he said thank you for saving my life, give me your name and phone number. and i said, it’s cool” LOL
Glad him and his daughters got to see each other again.
I'm sorry, but I can't feel sorry for these people who risk their lives for a stupid misadventure!!!!, I would have never had done this incredible dangerous thing!!!!.
He should have turned the hazard lights on the car!
God knows why people get super judgemental... Appreciate the sheer determination and happy that he survived
I know! So many comments are brutal.
Every person ever featured on this show deserves a Darwin Award, but narrowly escaped somehow.
*Lava is delicious & nutritious, because it has plenty of nutrients & minerals in it, therefore you must drink the lava &, or eat the lava for your body to become stronger & healthier.*
Wtf?!
lol 😂
I think you mean guava
The video journal is giving Michael Scott vibes
How did it not occur to him to turn back and start again? The mind boggles!
Bloody hell that was emotional
Let's do some basic math together... since 1 day equals 24 hours, we know that 2 days equals 48 hours (2x24) and 3 days equals 72 hours (3x24). So you see, if you've been lost for 77 hours, that's 3 days and 5 hours... not 5 days. Again, this is called basic math.
I’ve never laughed through one of these episodes before. Dewey you’re a haole.😂
Seems like a nice guy. If your in a bad situation this is the temperament you need, used coping mechanisms really well. Obviously poorly prepared with mistakes but the temperament was spot on for a survivalist
When he walked by his own car and didn’t see it… wow!
Thank U JESUS ,They Found U Just IN Time ,
Man, I always think I'm crazy when I do things like go camping and I go for a walk and it gets dark and I have to walk on a road that's not well lit and doesn't have a sidewalk and I have to scooch to the side when a car comes but its in a residential neighborhood,ha
Poor Dewey is what happens when we put warning labels on everything.
Poor dewy is why companies put warning labels on their products, just sayn 😆
This episode should be called how I F'd myself
Aside from every other moronic mistake, Dewey wasn’t even going to bring a flashlight. Should’ve been part of natural selection
right? this dude is an idiot lol
