Saskatchewan Canada here. We have run Shelbourne Reynolds starting in 1996. Wouldn't harvest without them. We have no need for a million dollar combine. We use a jd 9650 walker combine. Lol
On No-til: the last 4 years I farmed was with a Kinze planter and full Yetter no-til equipment including and especially cast iron closing wheels. I had such confidence. I observed that you couldn’t do any better seed placement with a scalpel and pair of tweezers! And that was way back in 2005!! Imagine what they’ve done in almost 20 years!!
Mike Mitchell was complaining to Ron from Hartung Family Farms about the turning radius of his new X-9. Ron is an engineer on the X-9 Combine design team. If you go back, Ron shows how to adjust the turning radius so the X-9 turns tighter.
Thanks for going over the downed wheat details. I was under the impression that a stripper header but have a harder time with wheat that had been down by weather but very clearly it handles it well.
The stripper heads create a LOT of airflow on their own, imagine using one of those over-walkway blowers in a store as a leaf blower. These stripper heads produce a couple times that much airflow and you have to be careful with them or you can literally blow grain out the back of the combine... but they DO let you move faster through the field, reduce wear on the combine's own systems and as shown they suck the crop up and in and scrape the seeds off. The heads actually wear out faster than draper/auger headers do because the component that scrapes the seeds off does so because its a narrow V like claw and that wears out quickly and you cannot simply replace an individual claw. They are very very much worth using as a specialty condition harvester here and, shown over on Mike Less' channel, you can then also mow and windrow the straw for use/removal/sale in full length. When you use a mower in the opposite direction of the combine travel it lifts up the crushed stems as well.
Jason, I really enjoyed this video. X9's and wheat harvest. Doesn't get better than that. Only one grain farm around me runs a Shelbourne head. They have an X9 1100 as well.

Very knowledgeable videos explaining new methods of harvesting! Thank You. It's a shame that JD Corp can't keep it all in USA. The original man, John Deere was a Midwest US man, a blacksmith, who improved and designed the soft center moldboard plow system. That's how it all was born.
I thought stripper heads were primarily used on the great plains so the tall stubble could catch snow in the arid climate. Neat to see them used in the Midwest. Would be interesting to see a yield comparison vs beans planted into short stubble. Retention of moisture due to the shading makes sense, but the beans are also shaded. Maybe it doesn't matter as much compared to spring planted beans due to the sun's angle in the summer. BTW, thanks for taking chaff to the face to show the before and after of the downed wheat.
In wheat season I get covered head to toe in chaff and carry home quite a bit of chopped straw inside my shoes. It’s worth it to get the close up views. The X9s really blast the straw out. Interestingly, Western kentucky was the first location that stripper heads were sold in 1991 in the North America market. It was not until a few years later that they expanded into other regions. This area was eager to use them because of the double crop beans previously they had windrow the wheat and then use pick up heads to harvest it to get the double crop beans planted as early as possible. The stripper heads really sped up the season and also when they win road if you got a thunderstorm, then you’d have a lot of wet wheat on the ground.
Another question that I have is there a difference between the quality of threshing that happens with the header versus the combine? Also since the header is doing so much of the threshing does it save maintenance that otherwise would be required on the combine? Does that end up being cheaper?
i remember in the late 90's when our first neighbour started using a Shelbourne header they had issues with wheel rims cracking under the weight of those headers but i imagine the tracks are well suited for the job
Nice set up. The issue here for 2024 was ensuring the harvest of all the down wheat successfully and not having thick straw to drill soybeans into. Very little straw is baled in this region as the wheat residue helps the second crop of soybeans.
Serious question: with only a 36 ft header, and a stripper that does 80% of the threshing in the head, and very little straw going through the machine, why would anyone need anything bigger than a class 7 or maybe 8 combine. That seems like a really expensive carrying case for the header. Can someone explain? If Shelbourne would make a 60 ft stripper (and they ought to) it still wouldn't tax that combine.
You're 100% correct. However a combine is a multi crop machine. Those ones probably push 50 foot draper cutting beans and a 12 or 16 row corn head. They need the capacity for those crops.
Shelbourne is a foreign owned company which means that profits are going out of our country. An American company needs to be making 40, 50 and 60 foot stripper heads. Agco used to make stripper heads but not any more. Maybe Shelbourne persuaded Agco to stop making them-1
My neighbour here in England has one that he bought expressly for use on grass seed crops. Grass seed is really tough and slow with a regular header. He some times uses it on wheat. Saves fuel as not putting much volume through the combine and its quicker and saves wear on the combine.
I wonder how much of a performance advantage those stripper headers give the combines, versus ones with traditional headers. With much less straw going through the machine, there shouldn't be quite so much wear and tear on the internal components.
@@jamesbarbour8400 you can load the machine right up to its power limit if you can keep losses under control. The reduced wear and tear is really only in the reduced number of hours to harvest the same number of acres.
We run a Claas 8900 on tracks here 15 miles north of London, England with a 12.3m Claas Convio header that has a flex knife which hugs the ground very well when you need to get low to pick up laid crops. The Convio header is a draper belt header, which is a big improvement over the conventional Vario header. It is perfect for picking up laid wheat like in your video here. Does the setup in the video use the stripper header for the soya beans too? If a regular header is used I imagine it would have to deal with the wheat straw going through the combine at that time?
So, with all that standing straw, does the combine have to work extra hard when harvesting soy beans? I'm assuming beans have to be cut very low with drapper heads. Maybe because the straw has stood and weathered for a while, it might not be much of a burden overall?
Great question I’m sure the straw will be rotten or eaten by bugs before the next crop comes to harvest. Probably gonna be challenging managing that stubble
I wounder how you manage rodents when stripping wheat, because most bird wont hunt them high stubbles like in the Video. Besides that problem, I really like the idea of only harvesting the heads

Farm equipment is a major investment industrial sized equipment to meet tight planting and harvesting windows. This is a multigenerational farm with mainly family members running the equipment. I often think when I’m traveling on the interstate and see construction equipment lining a repair project or an expansion and I wonder how many people question the cost of the bulldozer scraper, greater or wheel loader sitting out there. Big machines equally big cost to get a job done.
They move it they harvest up to it and then they turn it on and start to move it and keep on harvesting. Pivots do not move very fast so by the time they finish the field, the pivot has moved off to the cleared area and then they go back and get the small amount that’s directly under the pivot.
Shelbourne is the original. They have been selling these headers in the U.S. since 1991 from Kansas. AGCO offered Gleaner Massey stripper heads the late 1990’s and early 2000’s.

We have 2 Massey Ferguson 9540 combines and run a 40 foot agco draper in wheat and beans.

Our x9 has a 50' draper head and we cut to the ground to bale the straw.

Those Shelbourne heads work great, too bad they didn't make them any bigger. It seems a bit of a waste on such a large powerful combine.

They’re leaving a lot of heads
It leaves every head. The Shelbourne just removes the grain. Everything else is left in place. It’s a great harvesting set up.
